In Production- HBO Films: CONFIRMATION

Back in March we mentioned that HBO Films: CONFIRMATION had signed on Kerry Washington of ABC’s Scandal to star. The movie, about the Clarence Thomas hearings, will see her as Anita Hill. That case offered America its first look at the issues of sexual harassment in the workplace which all boiled to the surface when Thomas was out to grab a seat as a Supreme Court judge. Joining Washington in the upcoming film is a who’s who of talents taking on the players in this big-arena story. We start off with the key role on the other side of the table. Playing Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas will be Wendell Pierce. Yes, that Wendell Pierce,...

LEWIS AND CLARK Miniseries Casts Key Roles

Two key characters in the story of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corp of Discovery have been cast in the highly anticipated HBO miniseries. They are both important supporting characters that always seem to make it into the history books – Sacagawea and York. Actress Tanaya Beatty (pictured) has been cast as the Shoshone interpreter and guide Sacagawea She aided the expedition in dealing with the various Indian tribes they encountered, though she often slowed the journey down by often getting ill and giving birth along the way. It is said Lewis did not much care for her. The role of York is to be played by Stephen Hill. York...

Morgan Freeman Brings Bass Reeves Miniseries to HBO

Morgan Freeman Brings Bass Reeves Miniseries to HBO

Yet another miniseries adapted from a biography is in the planning stages at HBO. This project takes us to the classic Old West to play out the life of frontier Marshal Bass Reeves. Actor Morgan Freeman is one of the producers that will adapt the Art T. Burton biography Black Gun, Silver Star: The Life and Legend of Frontier Marshall Bass Reeves. Just who was this Old West lawman? He escaped from slavery during the civil war fleeing into Indian territory where he honed his firearm skills. He went on to become one of the first black U.S. Deputy Marshals in the Oklahoma territory deputized by the legendary “hanging judge” Isaac C....

HBO Films: NIGHTINGALE Review

HBO Films: NIGHTINGALE Review

This presentation may have gotten lost or never made if it wasn’t for its star. It is an interesting film, but one that is held together by a less than perfect script that is thankfully saved by the performance of the one and only on-screen character. Peter Snowden is that character and the actor who fleshes him out is David Oyelowo. Again, this writer feels that with some lesser actor in the role this film would never have survived. David Oyelowo (pronounced oh-YEH-lo-wo) is a classically trained British actor of Nigerian heritage who has done quite well for himself with projects in America. You might recognize him from Rise of the...

It was a series of hideaways and safehouses on a route to then northern states and freedom. The biopic is said to be based on a noted work about the the heroic Tubman entitled “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman,” by historian Kate Clifford Larson. Those...

HBO Films: BESSIE Review

HBO Films: BESSIE Review

This post is not going to offer a scene by scene recap of the HBO Films presentation that debuted on SATURDAY, MAY 16th, but it is going to offer up a look into the style and tone of the film in hopes that fans of HBO will take in the two hour experience for themselves. It is a movie not to be missed. Queen Latifah bares it all literally and figuratively in BESSIE a vanity project for her that is a solid portrayal of songstress Bessie Smith – Empress of the Blues. HBO Films has once again offered up a richly produced and designed TV-movie that at times beautifully depicts the wardrobes, music and sights of the day. At other times it shows...
