SEINFELD was billed as “a show about nothing.” CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM is a series about the man who created “a show about nothing.” That man is Larry David, and the title of this series reflects Larry’s annoyance with overly “chipper” people. Larry believes such people are slyly implying that they are “better than you.” Familiarity with NBC’s SEINFELD is not required viewing to enjoy its premium cable spiritual successor. Just be ready for dry humor and intricate arguments that transpire over the most rudimentary of daily situations.
The primary plot of CYE‘s 12th and final season is centered on Larry’s (Larry David) violation of Georgia’s Election Integrity Act of 2021. In E1 & E2, Larry flies from Los Angeles to Atlanta to appear at the birthday party of a wealthy fan. Leon ( J. B. Smoove) accompanies Larry on the trip, and they visit Leon’s Aunt Rae (Ellia English). In the midst of attending the birthday party and visiting relatives, a slew of nonsensical events transpire. The maid at the hotel is upset by the state of Larry’s room but he promises to leave her a generous tip. Later, while cleaning his pants, Larry doesn’t notice that he drops a ten-dollar bill into the toilet. The maid assumes this is the generous tip, and throws Larry’s items out the window. At the birthday party, Larry angers several people and the fan does not want to pay the appearance fee. Larry then accompanies Aunt Rae to a voting site on a hot afternoon. When Larry gives Aunt Rae water while in line to vote, he is arrested for violating a clause in the GA Election Integrity Act. When Larry is released on bail, his ordeal has reached national news and he is heavily praised for his good deed. Of course, this wouldn’t be CYE without further shenanigans happening around the main shenanigan. Larry hires and fires a lawyer named Joe who looks eerily like his archenemy Mocha Joe ( Saverio Guerra). Meanwhile, the Airbnb where Larry, Jeff (Jeff Garlin), and Susie (Susie Essman) are staying features an offensive lawn jockey. They attempt to get rid of the minstrel show work of art but break it, angering Susie who does not want to lose the security deposit. Larry and Susie’s antics have never grown old over the run of this series, and Larry’s attempt to repair the lawn jockey further vexes Susie. After the fallout of the lawn jockey situation, Larry pleads not guilty to the election charges to appease Aunt Rae.
E3-E9 covers the lead-up to the trial and the ensuing hilarious nonsense that happened in between. While golfing at Mr. Takahashi’s golf club, Larry is suspected of being “disgruntled.” Takahashi (Dana Lee) received a handwritten letter criticizing the club’s policies, and Larry has voiced his not-so-wanted opinion in the past. Although it is later discovered that Jeff is the disgruntled club member, Jeff’s fate is spared when the majority of the club members follow suit by saying they too are disgruntled. Larry may be in the clear of this accusation, but he is nearly kicked out of the golf club for not yelling “fore” when driving a ball down range. His overcite causes a patron to be hit by an errant golf ball.
The preparation for the trial involves a mock trial, where the mock jury finds Larry guilty. Larry admits his personality is not the warmest, however, he suspects that a rogue juror is influencing the rest. Larry’s suspicions are correct, as he discovered one of the jurors is a valet who witnessed Larry throwing his keys to another valet. That valet does not find key tossing to be offensive, but the juror does. Other highlights of the remaining episodes include Larry having to urinate whenever he hears the Gettysburg Address, being falsely accused of requesting a “happy ending” during a massage, and discovering that a woman that he once had a fling with, has now transitioned to be a man.
E10 is entitled “NO LESSONS LEARNED.” This is an appropriate title due to Larry’s refusal to learn from past mistakes and situations. Furthermore, Larry David left SEINFELD after the 7th season, to return to write the final episode of season 9, which concluded that series. The episode received mild criticism for its unfulfilling ending. The real Larry David learned his lesson and gave CYE a more satisfying ending to make up for it. During the trial, Mocha Joe, Takahashi, and many adversaries from the course of CYE, tear apart Larry’s character.
When Aunt Rae, takes the stand she initially speaks highly of Larry’s character. However, it is revealed during the trial (no better timing), that Jeff and Larry stole her salad dressing recipe, a staple of her restaurant. Aunt Rae, who has never used profanity in the series up until this point, goes on an F-bomb-laded rant that puts the final nail in the coffin for Larry’s freedom. Larry is sentenced to one year in prison.
Unlike the swift and morale-driven ending of SEINFELD, “No Lessons Learned”, ends with Larry still not learning jack-shit. He hasn’t learned when to practice brevity in arguments, not listening to the other person’s side of the argument. Nor has he learned to apologize for past transgressions. Nonetheless, Jerry Seinfeld appears and escorts Larry out of jail. Jerry reveals that one of the jurors violated the juror sequestration rules and a mistrial is declared. The state does not pursue any more charges against Larry. Both men remark that “this is how SEINFELD should have ended.”
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM aired on HBO for 12 years throughout a 22-year period, cementing itself alongside THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW as one of HBO’s early comedy classics. The main cast, guest stars, and endless dry humor situations have been pivotal in HBO’s five-decade-plus legacy.
A pretty, pretty big thank you goes to HBO, Larry David, and all of CYE for a great comedic ride!
