There Are Plenty of Stories Left in THE LEFTOVERS

Apr 23, 2017

I don’t know about you, but I thought perhaps THE LEFTOVERS could have lasted longer than three seasons. Here we are in the midst of the third and final episodes and I’m disappointed in...

As is the norm at HBO every drama hour is coupled with a set of comedy half-hours to make a Sunday night a complete package. 2017 is a slightly different schedule than the past few years have...

VINYL: “The Racket”

VINYL: “The Racket”

One of the many strengths of HBO programs is their unapologetic nature. Vinyl has been no exception to this, and while there are aspects of the show that border a little past absurd, it still manages to strike a harmonious chord of narrative flair, nostalgic bravado, and nuanced social familiarity. Use the last episode and this one as case in point.  “The Racket” continues the shows main storylines in a fairly roundabout fashion as it transitions from a soulfully poignant Otis Blackwell’s “Please Help Me Find My Way Home” into the vaguely comedic funeral of Frank ‘Buck’ Rogers (Andrew Dice Clay). Zak, Scott, and Skip (Ray...

CODES OF CONDUCT and CRUSHED Not Up To Code For HBO

CODES OF CONDUCT and CRUSHED Not Up To Code For HBO

For a network that has promised an increase in content it sure has been turning away considered works. Steve McQueen’s CODES OF CONDUCT has now been dropped as a series for HBO. Now, of course we haven’t seen a frame of footage from the pilot, but come on, HBO has aired such works as ARLI$$, HUNG and JOHN FROM CINCINNATI so surely they could have worked with McQueen to get this series, either full run or limited, to the screen? I mean what happened to it? It already had a green light to be a limited series of six episodes all to be directed by the Oscar nominated McQueen with Devon Terrell, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Dano & Rebecca...

New “Game of Thrones” Season Six Trailer Released!

New “Game of Thrones” Season Six Trailer Released!

Well, it was definitely worth the wait! Check out our first real glimpse of Season Six in this breathtaking new trailer! Well, HBO has out-done itself again with a trailer that is visually stunning as well as incredibly tantalizing. While critics will probably be breaking down every shot for weeks to come, it’s important to appreciate some of the most interesting moments right off the bat. Here’s a few screen-grabs that drew our eye. The trailer assured us that Jon Snow is still very dead…at least for the moment. Dany looks to be in some dire straits. Let’s hope Ser Jorah and Daario Naharis find her...

Philip Noyce Directs Part of HBO Miniseries: AMERICAN LION

Philip Noyce Directs Part of HBO Miniseries: AMERICAN LION

We reported a while back that Sean Penn was taking on the mantle of Andrew Jackson in the developing AMERICAN LION miniseries and now a director is attached. Philip Noyce (pictured), who has directed such works as Patriot Games, The Bone Collector, Rabbit-Proof Fence and HBO Films: MARY AND MARTHA, is now expected to direct some of the six-hour program. Our source says the production should get before the cameras in October and air in 2017. Granted a six-hour period piece is a big project, but couldn’t Noyce take on the whole project? It would have made for a cohesiveness and singular vision had it been that way. We will keep an eye out...

BALLERS Season Two Trailer

BALLERS Season Two Trailer

Whoa, Dwayne Johnson would just pound us if he knew we neglected the Trailer for Season Two of BALLERS. We better take care of that. But first, just in case you put the show out of your mind let’s get up to speed. Johnson plays Spencer Strasmore, a former pro football player now financial manager, surrounded by athletes with big deals and the babes that aren’t far behind in the hot, fun locale of Miami, Florida. It is the world of BALLERS Season One played out for 10 episodes from 06.21.15 to 08.23.15 alongside THE BRINK; that show fell off the brink into cancellation, but BALLERS gets to come around for another season. If you recall at...

The HARD KNOCKS Team Is Still Up For Grabs but the NOLA Saints Thinks It’s Them

The HARD KNOCKS Team Is Still Up For Grabs but the NOLA Saints Thinks It’s Them

NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk says they overheard the notion that the New Orleans Saints think they are the targeted team to star in HBO’s training camp series HARD KNOCKS this coming season. The site states – Per a league source, the Saints are bracing for the possibility of the league tapping them on the shoulder and directing them to be the subject of the annual Hard Knocks series. Well, that certainly could be the case as the ball club does meet the criteria, but they also could be paranoid. As always when we talk about this topic we got to mention the only teams exempt are those that have played the Playoff in either of the past...

SOLDIER GIRL Miniseries to Be Produced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus for HBO

SOLDIER GIRL Miniseries to Be Produced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus for HBO

A new project just got the greenlight with VEEP’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the helm. The source material, the non-fiction book “Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War”  by Helen Thorpe, will be turned into a miniseries for HBO. Louis-Dreyfus, who has served as executive producer on most of the later series she has starred in, will take the task alongside her husband Brad Hall. Set to pen the screenplay is former soldier Nicole Riegel in her first TV adaptation. She has written as yet unproduced wartime scripts but now alongside Louis-Dreyfus will be to bring this story to the HBO screen.   Regarding the book...

VICE PRINCIPALS, SILICON VALLEY and OUTCAST Debuting at SXSW in March

VICE PRINCIPALS, SILICON VALLEY and OUTCAST Debuting at SXSW in March

You all know what SXSW is, right? It stands for South By Southwest which is a 3-in-1 music, film and interactive media festival under one banner. It happens in Austin, Texas every year in March and can last for days. Tool about the festival’s website to see what going down in the heart of Texas. Trust me a lot is happening doing the nine day event from March 11 – 20, but we are, naturally, singling out the HBO content.  The new HBO series VICE PRINCIPALS and the new Robert Kirkman CINEMAX series OUTCAST will make their world premieres at panels of the 2016 SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festival this March, while the panel for...

Movie Review: Spy

Movie Review: Spy

One of the most pleasant surprises in 2015 was the release of Spy, a Paul Feig comedy starring Melissa McCarthy. The two had collaborated before on 2011’s Bridesmaids, and their new outing did not disappoint. Susan Cooper (McCarthy) works from a desk at CIA headquarters, guiding master spy Bradley Fine (Jude Law) through dangerous missions on the field. Though she is critical to the success of his missions, assisting him through his earpiece on her vast computer network, her contributions are largely overlooked. Bradley is fond of Susan, but he’s clearly oblivious to the fact that she has a crush on him. Eventually, and much to...

HBO Documentary Films: MAVIS!

HBO Documentary Films: MAVIS!

Overview: The first feature-length documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and her family group, the Staple Singers. From the delta-inflected gospel sound she helped pioneer in the 1950s, to the “message songs” of the civil rights era marching beside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to massive hits such as “I’ll Take You There” in the soul-filled Stax era, and her recent Grammy-winning work with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples is one of the most influential and enduring vocalists of our time and a true American icon.     Expectations: It is simple. I expect some great music out...

TOGETHERNESS: “Everybody is Grownups”

TOGETHERNESS: “Everybody is Grownups”

So far this season, we’ve seen Brett (Mark Duplass) invigorated in his new attitude and zest for life as a father and a husband.  Michelle (Melanie Lynskey) is still dealing with the fallout from her affair and trying to figure out her relationship with Brett.  Alex (Steve Zissis) is embracing his new celebrity and new girlfriend Christy (Ginger Gonzaga,) meanwhile Tina (Amanda Peet) is trying to wrap her brain around breaking Alex’s heart and how to fix it.  Awkwardness ensues. In “Everybody is Grownups,” Brett and Michelle prepare a party for Alex’s homecoming from filming in New Orleans. Brett’s...

Girls: “Good Man”

Girls: “Good Man”

With the bittersweet taste of the season premiere still on our lips, Girls takes us back to New York for impending tumultuousness, as if juxtaposing the dreamlike setting and mood of the first episode with irrationality and apathy in the second. Additionally, Jessa has become one of the best-developed characters I’ve ever seen on television, but I’ll get to her soon. All the girls have grown in some respect, but they all remain captives to their insecurities and old patterns. “It got gayer?” This episode serves as a prime example of Hannah’s nature as both a very selfish yet very comforting person. She is still dating Fran—not...

VINYL: “Whispered Secrets”

VINYL: “Whispered Secrets”

Yet again, the creative minds behind HBO’s unpredictable new drama have succeeded in maintaining an exceptionally high standard of television as the third episode of Vinyl aired earlier this week. The first episode of the new show was feature length and had such high production value that I was worried the rest of the season would be unable to follow suit, but I was completely wrong and find myself thinking during every episode “now THIS is how you make a TV program”. It is by far and away one of the best things I have seen on television in a very long time, every episode (find #2 here) takes you on a journey, the characters suck you...

HBO Ensures No “Game of Thrones” Leaks This Year

HBO Ensures No “Game of Thrones” Leaks This Year

HBO has announced it is going to extreme measures to ensure there will be no Game of Thrones leaks this year. Last spring, Christmas came early for Game of Thrones fans when the first four episodes of Season Five were leaked onto the internet early by a morally questionable media-person (Game of Thrones fans’ favorite kind of person). Most fans celebrated by calling in sick and binge-watching all four episodes with the glee of any Ironborn raider pillaging a village. Other, less piratically inclined fans chose not to watch any leaked episodes, either in order to support HBO or to appreciate the slow and sedate pace of an episode...

What We Learned from HBO’s 2016 Winter Image Trailer

What We Learned from HBO’s 2016 Winter Image Trailer

A new video clip highlighting HBO content has hit the scene. I for one was surprised of its arrival because I thought it a bit untimely. There are two other elements of surprise to be revealed below. It did, however, pack in a great combination of imagery and sound tightly edited into 1:05 of pure HBO excitement. If you haven’t caught it yet here is your opportunity before we break it down. Surprise # 1 – A bit untimely. HBO is trying to ramp up the current season already in play. We understand that but, how many times do we really need the same Richie Finestra’s sound bite and repeated imagery from VINYL? Even the shots from GIRLS...
