As we ride off of a TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY high like a surfer in Nazare, Portugal (see: 100 FOOT WAVE) we seek yet another HBO adrenaline rush. As we look at the announced slate for March it looks like we should be in luck.

A few quick points:

  • Kate Winslet Gives Us Something Fun
  • Max Has a New Series of its Own
  • Ramy Youssef Has MORE FEELINGS
  • Jerrod Carmichael Returns
  • Plus, a smattering of cartoons of the LOONEY sort
  • And the Candy Man!

HBO Original Series: First up, something completely different from MARE OF EASTTOWN for us from Kate Winslet. The six-episode HBO Original limited series THE REGIME, starring the Academy Award-winning actress, written by Will Tracy and directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs, debuts SUNDAY, MARCH 3 (9:00-10:00 pm ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. It tells the story of life within the walls of a modern authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Kate Winslet) has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her. The limited series stars Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant.

Note that the final season of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM is not done yet. The series has a new episode each week in March. Not that titles tell us much, but three of the upcoming titles are “Fish Stuck”, “The Gettysburg Address” and “The Dream Scheme.” It all leads off on SUNDAY, MARCH 03 at 10:00 pm ET/PT. Of CURB_Season12Shot-287x300the iconic series Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content stated, “It’s hard to say farewell to such a ground-breaking, brilliantly funny and iconic series like CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, which has left its mark across television and the comedy genre. Working alongside Larry David and Jeff Schaffer as well as all of the comedic masterminds that comprise our producers, cast and crew has been a joy that I will always treasure.” You too?

LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER is off and running with Season 11. The show continues in March beginning SUNDAY, MARCH 03 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. He has jumped in by tackling Supreme Court corruption, specifically focusing on Clarence Thomas, which ended up giving the Justice an ultimatum. Last week he addressed the practice of pig butchering of all things. Check in weekly to see what topics he takes on next. REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER continues its 22nd season picking up with its FRIDAY, MARCH 01 (10:00-11:00 pm) edition. As of late, he has had Grammy winner Killer Mike, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, and Bob Costas on his panel. Enjoy this dose of Maher…

Original Series Exclusive to Max: Max Original drama series THE GIRLS ON THE BUS invites Max_TheGirlsOnTheBus-Poster1-202x300viewers to hit the campaign trail alongside four female journalists, each of them different in their reporting styles and personalities. The story centers on Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist of Supergirl), a journalist who romanticizes a bygone era of campaign reporting and scraps her whole life for a shot at covering a presidential candidate for a paper of record. Sadie joins the bus and eventually bonds with three female competitors, Grace (Carla Gugino, seen in HBO’s ENTOURAGE, THE BRINK and JETT), Lola (Natasha Behnam of Mayans MC), and Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore of INSECURE). Despite their differences, the women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town – the battle for the White House. Also appearing are Scott Foley (TRUE BLOOD) and Griffin Dunne (This Is Us).

It is from creators Amy Chozick and Julie Plec and is inspired by Chozick’s experiences as a political reporter on the campaign bus with multiple presidential candidates. Chozick and Plec serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Rina Mimoun, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Marcos Siega; Jesse Peretz executive produced and directed the pilot; and Benoist serves as a producer. The series is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television debuts with two episodes on THURSDAY, MARCH 14, followed by one new episode weekly through May 09 on Max.

TOKYO VICE has four episodes dropping in March. Loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, season two of the series, takes us deeper into the city’s criminal underworld as Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) comes to realize that his life, and the lives of those close to him, are in terrible danger. The first installment of the month is on THURSDAY, MARCH 07 on Max. Plus ROYAL CRACKERS launches Season Two in the Adult Swim Hub on FRIDAY, MARCH 01.

HBO International Titles: No new titles come to this category this month unless something sneaks in after the fact, but there is international news. Max comes to Latin America & the Caribbean Mamon_Postercountries/territories. It might just help generate new international content going forward. While we are here though, let’s draw attention to some great international content How about THE HEAD from Japan/Spain, GRACIA! from Spain, OUR BOYS from the US/Israel, and MAMON from the Czech Republic?

HBO & Max Theatrical Movies: Two movies on the slate for March. One from Warner Bros. Pictures and the other via the A24 distribution deal. Debuting on SATURDAY, MARCH 08 (8:00 – 9:59 pm ET/PT) is the prequel all about the magic candy man we know as WONKA. It arrives on Max a day earlier. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.

The A24 title is just as fantastical but what do you expect from a Nicolas Cage work? It is titled DREAM SCENARIO. Hapless family man Paul Matthews (Cage) finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. But when his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom, in this wickedly entertaining comedy from writer-director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself) and producer Ari Aster. Co-starring Julianne Nicholson and Michael Cera. It lands on HBO on SATURDAY, MARCH 16 (8:00 – 9:45 pm ET/PT). We got a trailer for it also.

HBO Documentary Films: Other films might surface as the month goes on but for now we have one documentary slated.  HBO Original documentary A REVOLUTION ON CANVAS, a political thriller and verité portrait documentary, by producers and directors Sara Nodjoumi and Till Schauder dives into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of more than 100 “treasonous” paintings by Sara’s father, seminal Iranian modern artist Nickzad “Nicky” Nodjoumi. Brimming with emotional undercurrents. This 97-minute film follows Sara as she traces a timeline of events, discovering her father’s ongoing activism, his complicated relationship with her mother, artist Nahid Hagigat, and how the implications of his incendiary art impacted the trajectory of their family’s future together. Find it on TUESDAY, MARCH 05 (9:00 – 10:37 pm ET/ PT) on HBO and Max. Find the trailer below.

The other gig is the return of Jerrod Carmichael. His HBO Original comedy docuseries JERROD CARMICHAEL REALITY SHOW centers on Carmichael’s personal life, following him through encounters with friends, family, and strangers, all in his quest for love, sex, and connection. You can connect with him beginning FRIDAY, MARCH 29 (TBA).

MAX Documentary Films: Max has a documentary of its own that comes over from OWN. It is entitled JUSTICE USA and it uploads on THURSDAY, MARCH 14. It is a docu-series that takes a comprehensive insider 360-degree view of the criminal justice system. The work hails from Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy-winning Common who is quoted as saying “I’m proud of this series because it takes an honest look at the criminal justice system and highlights its need for reform. One of the greatest problems with the justice system is its dehumanization of people. But we have the ability to change that. My hope is this documentary brings visibility and change to the criminal justice system in the most humane way.” Judge for yourself.

HBO Sports: A sports documentary here. In 2011, two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon, nicknamed “The Lionheart,” died in a horrific crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, shaking the world of motorsports to its core. THE LIONHEART blends archival footage with vérité storytelling to weave together two distinct narratives: Dan’s storied career in the past and the present day lives of Dan’s widow Susie and sons Sebastian and Oliver. As Susie grapples with her grief and the responsibility of raising their sons alone, the two boys, ages 12 and 10, take on their father’s mantle and enter the world of professional racing. It debuts TUESDAY, MARCH 12 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.

Other Shows On HBO or Max: There are plenty of imported series coming over to Max from the Discovery side of the company that we purposely don’t talk about much. But for those interested MOTOR TREND content now appears on Max. It now has its own Hub. If you love everything about cars, the fast ones & the classic ones too, check it out.

Next Month’s Tease: We throw a name out there this month. Have you ever heard of Sasha Velour? You will in April.

Last Month’s Tease: We asked if you knew the work formally known as THE PALACE. If you follow HBOWatch News, you would have known it was the original title for THE REGIME, debuting in March.

Final Clip: Several videos this month but we squeezed out one. Here is the trailer for  THE GIRLS ON THE BUS.
