We don’t watch award shows, we just glean the news for which HBO works are nominated and which of them walk away with an award. The Hollywood Foreign Press has recently put out its list, but they are sort of outcasts as far as awards go. Nevertheless, some of our favorite HBO content from 2023 is being recognized by these critics. As it pertains to our interests, here are the contests we can root for –
BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
1923 (Paramount+); The Crown (Netflix); The Diplomat (Netflix); THE LAST OF US (HBO | Max); The Morning Show (Apple TV+) and SUCCESSION (HBO | Max)
You tell me, is The Morning Show all that good? Plus, note that no one still knows what to call HBO | Max?
BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Abbot Elementary (ABC); BARRY (HBO | Max); The Bear (FX); Jury Duty (Amazon Freevee); Only Murders In The Building (Hulu) and Ted Lasso (Apple TV+)
It is nice to see the final season of BARRY make it on the list, clearly the one I’d root for.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
Helen Mirren (1923); BELLA RAMSEY (THE LAST OF US); Keri Russell (The Diplomat); SARAH SNOOK (SUCCESSION); Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Emma Stone (The Curse)
Well, she was good but a bit of a surprise to see Miss Ramsey in the mix, I think. Not a surprise to see Snook or, for that matter, Staunton.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA
BRIAN COX (SUCCESSION); KIERAN CULKIN (SUCCESSION); Gary Oldman (Slow Horses); PEDRO PASCAL (THE LAST OF US); JEREMY STRONG (SUCCESSION) and Dominic West (The Crown)
You know, as often happens in these kinds of races, the votes for the SUCCESSION men could cancel each other out of the win.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
BILL HADER (BARRY); Steve Martin (Only Murders In the Building); Jason Segel (Shrinking); Martin Short (Only Murders In The Building); Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear)
A great bunch of actors here and I hope BARRY garners something out of it. Can it be for Hader’s performance?
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES, ANTHOLOGY SERIES, OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six); Brie Larson (Lesson In Chemistry); ELIZABETH OLSEN (LOVE & DEATH); Juno Temple (Fargo); Rache; Weisz (Dead Ringers) and Ali Wong (Beef)
Hey, thanks for reminding us of this strong HBO miniseries, which you can still catch on Max by the way.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES, ANTHOLOGY SERIES, OR A MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers); Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six); Jon Hamm (Fargo); WOODY HARRELSON (WHITE HOUSE PLUMBERS); David Oyelowo (Lawman: Bass Reeves) and Steven Yuen (Beef)
Ditto can be said for WHITE HOUSE PLUMBERS. What, Justin Theroux was subpar?
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE ON TELEVISION
Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown); Abby Elliot (The Bear); Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets); J. SMITH-CAMERON (SUCCESSION); Meryl Streep (Only Murders In The Building) and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso)
Does Streep need anything else? Oh, and in case you forgot Smith-Cameron played Gerri Kellman, Shiv’s godmother & Roman’s muse on HBO’s big drama.
BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE ON TELEVISION
Billy Crudup (The Morning Show); MATTHEW MACFADYEN (SUCCESSION); James Marsden (Jury Duty); Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear); ALAN RUCK (SUCCESSION) and ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD (SUCCESSION)
Again, there is the worry that these SUCCESSION men will cancel each other out.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN STAND-UP COMEDY ON TELEVISION
Ricky Gervais (Ricky Gervais: Armageddon); Trevor Noah (Trevor Noah: Where Was I); Chris Rock (Chris Rock: Selective Outrage); Amy Schumer (Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact); SARAH SILVERMAN (SARAH SILVERMAN: SOMEONE YOU LOVE) and Wanda Skyes (Wanda Skyes: I’m An Entertainer)
Sheesh and to think I didn’t give Silverman glowing reviews. What do I know?
I know that totaled up to 17 nominations for HBO | Max, the most of any TV distributor. I also know that SUCCESSION was nominated in every category it was eligible for, which is saying something. In fact, its nine (9) Globe nominations in a single season broke the record set by L.A. Law with eight (8) back in 1990. Let’s hope there is another record-breaker in HBO’s future, right?
If you are interested in such things, The Golden Globes airs on CBS the night of January 07, 2024.
