HBO’s BIG LITTLE LIES Not Over Quite Yet?

BigLittleLies_LadiesThe answer is possibly not, at least as far as executive producer and star Nicole Kidman is concerned. At a recent Q&A event, she said, “I loved Big Little Lies. We will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.” If there is likely to be anyone with insight on the matter you think it would be Kidman and if anyone had an influence on whether such a return could/would take place you’d think it would be her as well. It seems, therefore, that she wants to make it happen.

BigLittleLies_SkarsgardKidman-300x158It has happened before, if you recall. BIG LITTLE LIES was only meant to be a one-and-done limited series back in February through April of 2017, coming off of the Liane Moriarty novel of 2014. But then award season came around, right?  That first season received 16 Primetime Emmy Award nominations and won eight, including Outstanding Limited Series, a directing award for the late Jean-Marc Vallée, and acting awards for Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern. That same trio also won Golden Globe Awards in addition to a Best Miniseries or Television Film win for the series. Kidman and Skarsgård also received Screen Actors Guild Awards for their performances.

Off of that success, a second season was penned by David E. Kelley and Meryl Streep came on board to play out the story as her character questions the death of her son; Skarsgård’s role. But as good juicy dramas go, all does not end neat and tidy. That second season, if you need to be reminded, ended on a bit of a cliffhanger as all five women of our story headed to the police station to confess to all the big, little lies they’ve been holding onto.

BigLittleLies_titleSo, clearly, a third season about the fate of the Monterey Five, as they are known, has ground to grow on. We can be sure that Casey Bloys and HBO would welcome it.  He was quoted as saying upon the conclusion of Season Two, “I think the thing with Big Little Lies is you have a group of people who all really love working together but obviously they’re some of the most high-profile people working in entertainment. Reese [Witherspoon], Nicole [Kidman], Zoe [Kravitz], Laura [Dern], everybody is so busy. It would be great to get the band back together at some point but right now everybody is so busy and there’s no idea, where we’re all saying ‘that makes perfect sense’. I think it’s more of one of those ‘someday’.”

Well, with the Hollywood strikes over, that ‘someday’ could be closer than we think. Kelley may already be writing up a great story. We will keep you posted and that is not a big or little lie.
