We know all about the infighting and clashing egos that erupted between the SEX AND THE CITY stars. Despite it all, however, it seems that Kim Cattrall is making a cameo on Max’s JUST LIKE THAT… for no one else, but the fans. That’s right, for the fans, who just knew the story wasn’t complete without some time with Samantha Jones. They will have to settle for one brief cameo from Cattrall with none of the other gals in sight.
Her character won’t show up until the final episode of the show’s second season which means we won’t see her until the 11th installment in late August. The sophomore season debuts Thursday, June 22.
Thanks to Deadline, we have a reminder of when we last saw Cattrall’s Samantha. The last time fans saw her was in Sex and the City 2, the feature film that saw the ladies go to Abu Dhabi. When And Just Like That… was announced, its lineup did not include Cattrall who has had a public falling out with franchise star/executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker. The absence of Samantha from the group was explained as she had a falling out with Carrie and eventually moved to London. Throughout Season 1 of the Max continuation, Samantha was spoken about and she even interacted with Carrie following the death of her husband, Mr. Big. The two were even texting and making plans to reunite in Paris when the latter went to send off Big’s ashes into the Seine.
So, the character has been included all along, as showrunner Patrick Michael King and its stars are very aware of how integral the Jones character was to the initial series. The oldest and most sexually confident of the foursome, Samantha Jones was an independent businesswoman with a career in public relations. She was confident, strong, and extremely outspoken, and calls herself a “try-sexual” (meaning she’ll try anything once). Early on in the show, Samantha declares she had given up on relationships and had decided to just have sex “like a man”, that is: without emotions or feelings, and purely for physical gratification. She was ¼ of what made up a modern woman. Without her perspective, the sequel series, according to some, was not complete.
Remarking on the situation, Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte York Goldenblatt, said: “We just thought that, you know, it would be fun for the fans to have a little bit of Samantha because we know that they miss her and she’s a great character. I don’t know that we’re even trying for closure at this point or resolution. I think we just thought you know, here is, you know, our character who’s been gone. And we know people miss her and Carrie misses her… And wouldn’t this be great to have a little bit of her, you know, that’s what we wanted. And then I think maybe hopes have been lifted, possibly higher than that. And that was not our intention. So, I hope people aren’t disappointed.”
What is disappointing is the inane feud itself and the fact that this cameo was not left as a surprise for viewers of the sequel series on Max. We are sure the moment with Samantha Jones, however, will not disappoint.
