What’s Next for Kenny Fucking Powers?

Kenny Powers? You’re fucking IN.

Eastbound-4-Powers

Kenny Powers burst into our lives back in 2009 with a dramatic, dark, poetic, ridiculous and hilarious first season of Eastbound and Down.  Now, 4 years later, season four is coming and I’m expecting great things, really great things. Season one introduced us to the washed out baseball stars new life in Shelby, home of his big bosomed childhood sweetheart April, her loveable yet pathetic fiancé Terrence Cutler, the creepy and obsessive Stevie and the majestic, white haired car salesman Ashley Shaeffer.  The season paved the way for further greatness with such moments as Kenny throwing up at a high school disco (because of the egg rolls not because of the ecstasy), his ‘well-disguised’ premature ejaculation at Aprils BBQ and the time he told fuck buddy Tracy she had clothes like a ‘fucking dickhead’. The morals of season one lie in the ‘You’re fucking out’ tapes of his career, ostensibly offering lines like ‘When you bring the thunder, sometimes you get lost in the storm’ Powerful stuff.

Big things were expected in season two, Kenny had ditched April at a gas station after asking her to buy him some Skittles and where does he wind up? Mexico, obviously. This chapter of the Kenny Powers story was an odd one, a whole lot more serious and missing the characters we had known and loved in season one. No Ashley Shaeffer, no April and Cutler, no Clegg, no Tracy and no Dustin.  Kenny is still on Stevie’s radar however, and he winds up in Mexico as well with his bestest best friend forever for a super fun adventure.  Kenny Powers is now an ass-man and earns his money by cock fighting. Apart from finding his Father there, Mexico didn’t do Kenny any favours and he returned to Shelby, a changed man, to a heavily pregnant April in a new relationship. Oh and yes Kenny was now to become a Father.

Season three took place in Myrtle Beach, Kenny was playing baseball again and was having an awful lot of fun with a high school student (if you know what I mean).  With the addition of a baby, the welcome return of Ashley Shaeffer and the introduction of Kenny’s Mom, season 3 was a welcome return to form, we’ll forgive Kenny for his Mexico adventures, we all make mistakes.  The season ended with Kenny faking his own death, shaking the world to its core at the loss of such a great baseball hero (or so he would have you believe). He then arrives on Aprils doorstep, bleach blonde and ready to start a new life with her and Toby. After the tells him ‘come inside, you son of a bitch’ the door shuts and the chapter closes.

What next?! What could possibly happen to Kenny this time? We know things: Kenny is now considered dead by everyone except April, Ashley Shaeffer will have a serious hard on for revenge after losing Stevie to Kenny early on in season three and Maria and Stevie are expecting a child.

Perhaps season four could see in a serious shift in Kenny’s attitude, he’s accomplished what he wanted to do all along which was to go back to the majors and get April back. He was offered the Majors but decided to turns his attentions to solely April and Toby, he’s happy. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if the season four opener was him having sex with someone new or worse still, STD riddled Tracy.  In terms of other characters, considering we’re back in Shelby, I’m hoping for lots of Clegg with sprinklings of Cutler. Maybe the two have teamed up and Cutler is the equivalent of a well used gym sock stuffed with beer and cocaine, replacing Kenny as Clegg’s best buddy. This is all assuming that Kenny will come clean about faking his own death to show his face in his home town. You’d think he would show himself to Dustin and Clegg, but he’s probably going to be relishing in the glory his own death will bring him. Fallen idol, Kenny Powers.

As each season has gone on, the content has gotten darker and darker, culminating in some grim scenes in season three that had me questioning the writers motives. In places it stopped being funny to the point where I was questioning its means as a comedy show. The episodes with Shanes overdoes were rescued by Kenny’s reactions but the overall tone shifted to a dank place, bringing up death – something that was new to Kenny up until now. The episode with Shane’s funeral was a disaster for Stevie, first cheating on Maria in the front seat of a car, then throwing up on a tree directly afterwards finally allowing Maria to penetrate him with a purple vibrator. Stevie gives me the creeps at the best of times, but when he’s virtually being ass raped by his own girlfriend I can’t help think a line has been crossed.  You can always rely on HBO for that.

When season three was running, most were under the impression that the arc of the Kenny powers story was coming to a close, even Danny McBride said that it was reaching its climax. It certainly felt that way up until the finale when it was quite clear another season was in the pipeline. What more of Kenny Powers’ story is there left to tell? Will we finally see Kenny as a happy family man? What about Maria and Stevie who remain in Myrtle Beach? Will Ashley Shaeffer get his revenge? So many questions and only a couple of months left to wait.

The man with an arm like a fucking cannon and a dick like a Burmese python is coming back.
