VICE Media Announces Web Series that Includes A Look At HBO Shows

VICE Media recently started up a new web series on their site, Vice.com, called The Real that might, from time to time, be of interest to HBO viewers. It is a series which will profile the true stories and personalities behind just a few of Hollywood’s memorable entertainment. The Real launched because a previous piece about tracking down a true life Walter White (as in the one from Breaking Bad) proved quite popular. The series started on October 1 with a behind the facts look at HBO fave TRUE DETECTIVE. Series host Giana Toboni went down to Louisiana and linked up with two detectives, Special Agent Todd Teddler and Captain Stewart...

VICE Development Deal Not Affecting HBO’s Show

VICE Development Deal Not Affecting HBO’s Show

VICE Media is a big machine with a website, YouTube channel, magazine and, of course, its HBO program. The media outlet has been growing so well that the big entertainment companies have been looking for a piece of the action. Even Time Warner, HBO’s parent company, was interested.    A+E Networks and Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV), however, have bought into the VICE franchise instead. They have invested $500 million into VICE Media. Quickly, if you are not knowledgeable of the investors – A+E Networks owns, A&E, History and Lifetime channels and TCV is a investor group involved with GoDaddy and Expedia. They have infused...

VICE Season Two Episode 12 Review

Note: This is the Season Finale of VICE. Season Three and Four have been confirmed. Overview: Camden, NJ, one of the poorest, most drug-ridden cities in the country, has a murder rate 12 times the national average. In 2011, the city cut its police force almost in half, with nearly 80,000 residents regularly policed by 12 cops at a time. The state stepped in to overhaul the department, introducing an experimental “Metro” security apparatus equipped with futuristic technologies like gunshot detecting, triangulation microphones and automatic license-plate readers. As similar surveillance systems are implemented across the country, VICE...

VICE Season Two; Episode 11 Review

VICE Season Two; Episode 11 Review

Note: It is apropos that my 300th post for HBOWatch is a VICE episode because it has proven to be my favorite show currently on HBO. For those following the series you recall that last week was an off-week for the series. Because of that we did not get a sneak peek of the eleventh installment upon episode 10’s airing. So we get an added clip this post with the preview of what I am about to review. I offer it now before the stated Overview.   Overview: Since the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan, heroin production in the region has skyrocketed, making the country the number-one producer in the world by a large margin. Though Iran,...

VICE Season Two Episode 10 Review

Overview: In March 2011 the Tohoku earthquake in Japan created a tsunami that killed some 16,000 people and caused an estimated $210 billion worth of damage. The tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, resulting in massive emissions of radioactive materials, the likes of which hadn’t been seen since Chernobyl in 1986. In the aftermath of the Japan disaster, the government and TEPCO, the plant’s operator, withheld information about the extent of the damage, causing a culture of fear and mistrust. Three years later, citizens and the international community are left wondering if Japan really does have the...

VICE Season Two Episode 9 Review

Overview: More than 200 million gallons of oil surged into the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.  To combat the worst environmental disaster in American history, BP and the Coast Guard dumped nearly 2 million gallons of a chemical dispersant called Corexit into the Gulf. But instead of helping clean up the spill, Corexit made things worse. The seafood industry is decimated, and clean-up workers have developed debilitating respiratory and central nervous-system problems, along with skin rashes. Scientific studies have proven that Corexit exposure kills cells in the human airway, and makes oil 52 times more toxic to the environment. Four years later,...

VICE Season Two; Episode 8 Review

Overview: As humanity’s appetite for energy grows exponentially, the extraction industry scrambles to the most remote regions on Earth to satisfy demand. In the underdeveloped Melanesian country of Papua New Guinea, America’s Exxon Mobil has staked its claim to a $19 billion liquid natural-gas project expected to start production in late 2014. While some see Exxon’s mammoth presence as the catalyst that will usher the country into the 21st century, others predict the initiative could plunge its people into civil war. VICE heads to Papua New Guinea to investigate the venture and its potential consequences.   Over the past three...

VICE Season Two; Episode 7 Review

VICE Season Two; Episode 7 Review

Overview: The brutal details of the 2012 Delhi bus gang rape focused international attention on India’s rampant rape issue. Inept law enforcement, the social stigma associated with rape, and a patriarchal social structure have allowed sexual assaults to plague Indian women. Delhi’s police department has vowed to hire more female officers and set up a help desk but these measures are hardly a solution. Reports of rape in Delhi doubled in 2013 and, as bad as it is in Delhi, the Indian countryside is worse.   Instead of investigating rape cases, rural police officers ignore victims and their families. Sampat Pal has united rural...

VICE Season Two Episode 6 Review

Overview:  On January, 01, 2014, the legalization of marijuana in the U. S. became a reality when Colorado lifted its prohibition on recreational marijuana use. Now, cannabis sellers in the state can sell from seed to smoke. While the experiment has ushered in a gold-rush mentality for local entrepreneurs, Mexican cartels are projected to lose billions of dollars in profits. VICE looks at the impact of this ever-growing trade on the local and national economy as businessmen and lawmakers try to capitalize on legal weed. If the nation goes the way of Colorado, American commerce and lifestyle will change forever.  Last season VICE...

VICE Season Two Episode 5 Review

Overview: In the throes of a crippling, violent insurgency, Dagestan is Russia’s hotbed for Muslim extremism, and its jihadists have been behind many high-profile terrorist plots around the world. Alleged Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev (pictured) spent six months there the year before that deadly attack. To understand why so much terrorist activity originates in the region, and to see firsthand what Tsarnaev learned during his stay, VICE heads to Dagestan to follow in terrorists’ footsteps. The Israel-Palestinian conflict is one of the best-known and longest-standing conflicts in the world. Although the United States publicly...

VICE Season Two Episode 4 Review

Overview: The ongoing civil war in Syria has been covered extensively in the media, with the Free Syrian Army, Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the myriad of jihadi groups dominating the headlines. Meanwhile, one ethnic group, the Kurds, goes largely unmentioned as it tries to carve out its own state in the four countries where its people live: Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria. While they’ve had some success gaining autonomy in Iraq, Kurds in the Western-most tip of Syria are using the chaos of the civil war to gain their own little statelet. Thomas Morton goes to the frontline of the battle for a Kurdish state to follow the story of...
