HBO NEWS: Reeds and Blackfish in for Season 3

By Charlie Harwood on May 29, 2012 to Game of Thrones

James Hibberd from Entertainment Weekly got the inside scoop on a partial casting list for the third season of Game of Thrones today. Notables from the list include Jojen and Meera Reed; Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish), uncle of Catelyn Stark; Edmure Tully, Cat’s brother; and Olenna Redwyne, The Queen of Thorns. Rememeber, this is just a partial cast list and there are others being added as well. So, just because you don’t see a name, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t being cast. The article also included this interesting quote from co-creator and showrunner David Benioff:

“It’s important to point out that that we have the largest cast on television right now. We introduced dozens of new characters in season two. If you hurl 300 characters at an audience, the story collapses under the weight of too many faces, too many names, and too many subplots. We need to be just as mindful of the audience members who have never read the books as we are of the readers; the series will fail if we only appeal to those who already know the characters. So we try to be parsimonious about how many new roles we introduce to the story and when we introduce them.”

Here is the full list from EW.com with descriptions:

Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.

Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.

Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.

Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.

Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.

Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.

Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.

Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.

Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.

Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.

Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider

What do you think fans? Is there anyone on this list you are particularly excited for? Who isn’t here that you want to see cast? You can also check out our casting speculation article for Season Three for info on possible actors to fill these roles.

  • This is huge. With all the intense joy that Blackwater created I’ve totally neglected this juicy bit of news. I think the fan community, mostly book readers, are possibly at a peak of excitement and trust for the show that will hopefully sustain into season 3 which if they do it right will be the best season of TV that ever existed.

I mention in my casting spec article that I’m not big on the Reeds, but seeing them on screen will probably give me chills like every new character introduced this season. Pretty much everyone in the above list is huge! Queen of Thrones I’m hoping is the reason Maggie Smith left Downton Abbey.

We saw Berric Dondarion in one scene in season one where Ned sends him into the Riverlands to capture Gregor Clegane and we’ve heard mentions of the Brotherhood so I’d imagine they are recasting because that character is amazeballs. Ugh… I’m overjoyed right now. Like hearing the release date for Dance with Dragons.
