Julio Torres is not done with his brand of quirky! You might remember him as the co-creator of LOS ESPOOKYS, on which he also played as the character of Andrés, and for his 2019 HBO Comedy Special MY FAVORITE SHAPES. Well, he is not done playing at HBO as a new series from him gets on the schedule.
FANTASMAS is the name and it arrives in June; below is the first pic from the work. Here is the official word via a press release:
The HBO Original comedy series FANTASMAS, created, directed, written and starring Julio Torres (“Problemista,” HBO’s “Los Espookys”), debuts this June on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. New episodes of the six-episode season will debut weekly.
Logline: In FANTASMAS, Julio Torres tells the tale of when he lost a golden oyster. The people he encounters as he searches for it and the musings he has become points of departure for little films along the way, as Torres navigates weaving in and out of these introspective, often eerie comedic stories.
This Salvadoran/American artist has actually appeared in far more projects than I ever realized. Torres can also be heard as a voice on the Max title TUCA & BERTIE and has lent his voice to Bob’s Burgers and The Great North animated titles as well. He also appears in an episode of 2016’s HIGH MAINTENANCE on HBO and has an A24 movie titled Problemista, which will likely be featured on Max via the A24 deal someday soon.
Now, I wonder, will any of his old LOS ESPOOKYS castmates make it on FANTASMAS? I guess we will know in June. We will update in that month’s “What’s On” for the exact premiere date and drop the keyart to boot. Do you follow Julio Torres and his surrealist skew of life & society?
