Game Of Thrones Season 6, Episode 1: “The Red Woman”

Apr 26, 2016

Its that time of year again, the time in which we all fall in love with characters, and possibilities only to see them ripped away from us in a brutal show of callousness. If you hadn’t...

Surprising News As Terence Winter Out As VINYL Showrunner

Apr 24, 2016

Needless to say HBO could have been happier with the premiere season of VINYL. Its viewership was not as high as they hoped. Though the critics seemed to like it well enough the audiences were...

Girls Season Five Finale: “I Love You Baby”

Apr 19, 2016

The end of this season of Girls brings about the stunning hope that maybe, just maybe, they might be growing up.  For me, I’ve always considered adulthood to be something I do, not...

HBO Documentary Films: MAPPLETHORPE – LOOK AT THE PICTURES

HBO Documentary Films: MAPPLETHORPE – LOOK AT THE PICTURES

Overview: “Look at the pictures,” said Senator Jesse Helms, denouncing the controversial art of Robert Mapplethorpe, whose photographs pushed boundaries with frank depictions of nudity, se xuality and fetishism, igniting a culture war that rages to this day. More than 25 years later, the HBO Documentary Films presentation MAPPLETHORPE: LOOK AT THE PICTURES does just that, taking an unflinching, unprecedented look at his most provocative work. From acclaimed filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato (Inside Deep Throat; HBO’s WISHFUL DRINKING and THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE ), and produced by Katharina Otto-Bernstein (Absolute Wilson),...

HBO Brass: Don’t Expect A Game of Thrones Spin Off Anytime Soon

HBO Brass: Don’t Expect A Game of Thrones Spin Off Anytime Soon

With only a few more years until HBO’s epic series Game of Thrones, reaches its end, many have hoped for a spin-off show in the future. The idea isn’t necessarily unprecedented– the incredibly popular show, The Walking Dead has recently debuted a spin-off series; similarly, Better Call Saul, which takes viewers back to the world of Breaking Bad is almost finished with a successful second season. Spin-off series are all the rage it seems, and for networks, these shows offer an almost guaranteed promise of revenue from a large pool of already existing fans. Nevertheless,  according to recent reports by Entertainment...

Togetherness – What Could Have Been

Togetherness – What Could Have Been

Since Togetherness ended in such an abrupt but perfectly placed way for a next season, I postulated what the third season could have been. Tina (Amanda Peet) gets pleasantly pregnant with Alex (Steve Zissis).  While at first Alex wants them to be a couple, Tina balks.  The two begin waffling over whether they can manage being a real couple, or perhaps co-parenting is the better solution.  The couple continues on-again-off-again throughout most of the pregnancy, but as the months come to a close, they both have to decide how they really feel and what they really want from each other. Brett (Mark Duplass) and Michelle (Melanie Lynskey)...

Togetherness: “For the Kids”

Togetherness: “For the Kids”

This is it.  The very last episode of Togetherness.  I’m not entirely sure what precipitated the swift end to such an amazing show, but I’m a little bit fraught.  It is nice to know that the Duplass brothers will continue their creative relationship with HBO because if they can create this, then I know they’ve got some good ideas.  But for now, let’s bid adieu correctly. Tina’s (Amanda Peet) brief male encounter from last week and Alex’s surprise announcement doesn’t deter Tina from getting her lady bits checked out to make sure a bun can cook properly.  For the moment, her choice of sperm...

Girls: “Homeward Bound”

Girls: “Homeward Bound”

This season of Girls has really showcased the destructive power of the female leads. Each one has achieved something they’ve always wanted, and then completely squandered it. Jessa is finally in a real relationship, preparing to go to school, Soshanna has gone to the country of her dreams, Marnie has gotten married, and Hannah has obtained a good job with a great boyfriend. This is the episode, however, where we see the final nail in the coffin for all of their dreams. JE NE SAIS BLAH Episode 8 opens with Soshanna arriving back in America, and almost as soon as she is off the tarmac, she regrets her decision to leave Japan. There is...

VINYL: “Rock and Roll Queen”

VINYL: “Rock and Roll Queen”

Rock and Roll in the 1970s was a hectic, drug infused, frantically paced business. Add plenty of sexual encounters, drugs to seal potential deals and lucrative promises of sell out records, plus legions of fans and cold hard cash and you get the idea. Wow, what a wild time! As for American Century Records, it continues to take a pummeling in every which way. Colleagues test each other’s limits; bad decisions are followed by even worse consequences and relationships are strained and put to the test. I don’t even know what to say about Richie and Devon. It’s clear they are not getting back together – too many lies between the...

Second Game of Thrones Season 6 Trailer Arrives

Second Game of Thrones Season 6 Trailer Arrives

With less than two weeks to go until the world-wide premier of Game of Thrones‘ sixth season, HBO is making sure we know we have a lot to look forward to. Earlier today, a second trailer for Season Six was released, and it looks amazing! In an action packed two minutes, we are reminded that the odds have never been higher for our favorite characters. Jon Snow lies dead as his brothers battle for his corpse. Arya is blinded, and learning a harsh lesson at the House of Black and White. Daenerys is stripped of her titles, and ultimately her clothes as she finds herself once again a stranger among savages. Sansa Stark, on the other hand,...

Movie Review: LUCY

Movie Review: LUCY

A woman tricked into becoming a reluctant drug mule. A well renowned professor who may be able to help her. A ruthless drug kingpin who will stop at nothing to retrieve his stash of drugs. I’ve watched a few Luc Besson movies to know that this would be a fast paced, almost frantic movie that captures a woman on the run, with increasing strength, stealth and telekinetic power that turns the tables on the bad guys. I’m also a Morgan Freeman fan, hence why I tuned into this movie. He plays one of the few people who can help Lucy. Now, what ticks me off about the premise of this movie is that Lucy appears to be a fairly intelligent young...

Girls: “Hello Kitty”

Girls: “Hello Kitty”

This past weekend’s episode of Girls found our favorite flawed females in yet another downward spiral of negative emotions and self-destruction—with the only exception being Marnie, who has grown in spectacular fashion as of late. Nothing can be said for Shosh, but we can imagine she’s living it up in Japan with Yoshi and her new gal pals. Here’s a breakdown of this week’s turmoil:   “Showing your vagina to your boss is not an okay thing to do!” Hannah’s downfall with Fran has been a long time coming this season. Her annoyance with him has become almost a chore to watch, snowballing from grammatical mistakes and...

Game of Thrones Latex Sword Review: Ice

Game of Thrones Latex Sword Review: Ice

Here on HBOWatch we’re prone to reviewing all things HBO. From DVD and Blu-Ray releases of all your favorite series,  to vinyl collectible dolls to almost every episode of major HBO series as it airs. But here’s something a little different. We got our hands on Ice. No, not the real Ice we’re too clumsy for that huge thing. No, we needed a sword made not of Valaryian steel but of something softer… like latex, maybe. Well Fun.com actually has such a sword and while, at first, we thought it might have been a little lame. As soon as we started wielding it I knew it was a winner. Let’s start with the basics....

TOGETHERNESS: “The Sand Situation”

TOGETHERNESS: “The Sand Situation”

Let me lead this review off by stating that the fact that this series now ends in one more episode opened up a lot of questions of whether it was going to end on the right note. We won’t know that for another week yet. We certainly needed a high & positive moment though, and we got it, but it all went abruptly as it came. That type of back & forth is what makes this shows so real. That is what makes it a treat to watch and that is what makes it a disappointment that it soon ends. But first let’s look at this seventh episode starting with the Inside the Episode clip. The episode had a few strong moments in it. You know, Michelle...

VINYL: “E.A.B.”

VINYL: “E.A.B.”

E.A.B. Three chords that lent themselves to the beginning of the punk movement in the 1970s. In E.A.B., we see the careful tutelage of Lester Grimes and the Nasty Bits; we see just how much blues had an impact on rock and roll and punk rock and of course, without fail, we see Richie in trouble. The Good: Lester has taken the Nasty Bits under his wing and demonstrates what it means to be a musician in the fullest sense of the word. It’s not about fame. It’s about feeling something in your gut. It’s about creating a sound, something that grabs a hold of the audience and they resonate with it. It’s about instruments and musical...

David Simon’s THE DEUCE Adds More Writers to the NYC Porn Series

David Simon’s THE DEUCE Adds More Writers to the NYC Porn Series

THE DEUCE is still being written and that is okay because we expect a David Simon piece to be well written and the additions to that staff might just prove helpful. Not only is Simon himself writing, but from the start George Pelecanos and Richard Price have been in place in that capacity as well. Now being added as scribes are two novelists and they are Megan Abbott and Lisa Lutz. Here is a quick look at why they will prove valuable to the series going forward. Megan Abbott (pictured at right)  is an award-winning author of a number of novels and magazine pieces. But what we noted might really be an asset is the fact that she wrote works...

HBO Guide For April Features An Aidan Gillen (GOT’s Littlefinger) Interview

HBO Guide For April Features An Aidan Gillen (GOT’s Littlefinger) Interview

Here is the first part of a little interview HBO had with actor Aidan Gillen about his role in the upcoming Season Six of GAME OF THRONES.   Game Of Thrones is back… and as certain as the fact that “Winter is Coming,” Petyr Baelish, a.k.a. “Littlefinger,” will be up to his usual devious power plays. Aidan Gillen, the actor who so perfectly embodies Littlefinger and who memorably played Mayor Tommy Carcetti on HBO’s THE WIRE, kindly took some time to talk about his character, his motivations and more.   HBO: Where does Littlefinger fit among the various players vying for power at this point in the story?   Aidan Gillen:...
