Via an arrangement HBO/Max has with the A24 production company new movies are getting added to the steamer, and occasionally the linear cable channel, for our enjoyment. Later on this month, HBO will be joining Max in offering PRISCILLA, the noted Priscilla Beaulieu Presley story, but the first movie in the agreement is completely different and is now exclusively on the Max streaming site. So, here is our brief look at DICKS: THE MUSICAL.

Truth be told, at first upon seeing the title I thought this was a movie about talking genitalia. Don’t snigger, there have been movies of the like before (see Hard Feelings and Chatterbox), but I thankfully learned that was not the case here. The title is employing the othe slang usage  – individuals who are considered to be rude, abrasive, inconsiderate, obnoxious, or otherwise contemptible; also known as ‘jerks.’

DicksTheMusical_DanceThus, we have two dicks in a movie musical (what would make our leads any more obnoxious than them bursting out into song?) out to get their divorced parents back together again. In a nutshell, that’s it, but in this adaptation of an Off-Broadway show there is a bit more to it I hope. Creators Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson, recreate their characters of Craig and Trevor and are joined by Megan Mullally and Nathan Lane as their parents Evelyn & Harris. Also appearing are Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Yang, Tom Kenney Rick Offerman, and others.

Please, take in the trailer. It will set up the plot, tone, and soundtrack and let you know just what to prepare for.

Sewer Boys? Okay, do they sing & dance too? Does God, played by Yang, sing or does he simply narrate the story? Megan Thee Stallion as Gloria, the dicks’ boss has a rap number that seems to be a winner, but what of the rest of it? Does it matter? Does this movie by Larry Charles, who directed many of CURB YOUR ENRTHUSIASM’s episodes plus filmed Borat make this idea click…or is it just a bunch of dicks? Only you can tell if it appeals to you. But our go-to, Rotten Tomatoes says –
