Arriving on HBO as a Saturday night offering this month is Warner Bros.’ THE NUN II. It is perfect timing if you want a Halloween fright, but it arrives a bit earlier than expected from its theatrical window in cinema houses across the land. It was just released in September but is already arriving SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28 at 8:00 pm ET on HBO platforms and streaming on Max. That could be due to the fact that the film grossed only $85.4 million in the U.S.
Serving as a sequel to The Nun (2018) and the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise, the film stars Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons, returning from the first film, with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast. Peter Safran and James Wan return as producers with Michael Chaves directing. But is it spook-tastically thrilling? Does the Demon Nun Valak grip viewers in fear or is it just a set of well-timed jump scares? Either way, a scary pic from the safety of your own home just might keep you in that Halloween vibe as the 31st approaches.
In this sequel, Sister Irene (Farmiga), who got ensnared by the evil demon nun in the first flick, hightails it out of Romania to take up her spiritual tasks in Italy. But she is called upon to address evil attacks associated with Valak (Aarons) again after twenty years have passed. It seems Valak is now using Maurice (Bloquet) as her vessel; she possessed him in the first film and now Sister Irene must save him by utilizing holy relics once again as her armament. How she vanquishes the demonic nun is something you must be willing to see play out when you take on THE NUN II.
As for what people are saying about this latest from the Conjuring Universe? It seems some liked THE NUN II better than its first picture including those aforementioned jump scares. Independent (UK) states, “If you can stomach roughly an hour of a scary nun with a subpar skincare routine popping her head out of doorways and chasing French people down corridors, there’s a gleefully demented finale waiting for you.”
