The Political GAME CHANGE Franchise Gets An HBO Sequel

HBO has dropped official word that it will continue its look at the U. S. political machine that it has chronicled in two other projects to date. A miniseries is in the works from the team behind GAME CHANGE that will examine the 2016 Presidential election cycle. It will be written by “Game Change” authors Mark Halperin and John Heileman, produced by Tom Hanks directed by Jay Roach. Here is the press release: HBO FILMS TO CHRONICLE THE EXTRAORDINARY EVENTS OF THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN A MINISERIES TO BE BASED ON THE UPCOMING BOOK BY MARK HALPERIN AND JOHN HEILEMANN, FROM THE PRODUCERS AND DIRECTOR OF HBO’S EMMY-WINNING FILM...

HBO Documentary Films: THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS: YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE

HBO Documentary Films: THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS: YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE

Overview: Over the past 16 years, an extraordinary group of musicians has come together to celebrate the universal power of music. Named for the ancient trade route linking Asia, Africa and Europe, the Silk Road Ensemble was conceived by renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2000 and consists of a diverse and rotating lineup of instrumentalists, vocalists, composers and storytellers from around the world. The collective exemplifies music’s ability to blur geographical boundaries, blend disparate cultures, and inspire hope for both artists and audiences.   Expectations: This seems to be a documentary that is straight forward and simple and...

Movie Review: Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

What do you expect going into a Seth Rogan film? If you answered an opening sex scene including vomit, then you answered correctly. In this sequel to the hit Neighbors, our lovely couple once again finds themselves at odds with a bunch of young people over territory. When Mac (Seth Rogan) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) discover she is pregnant with their second child, the couple decides to look for a bigger house.  Their house goes up for sale and closes into escrow for 30 days.  During escrow, the buyers of the house have time to do inspections and have the option to back out of the sale if anything goes amiss. Unfortunately for our comedic duo...

Game of Thrones Season 7 Premiere Date Revealed

Game of Thrones Season 7 Premiere Date Revealed

Mark your calendars! After months of mystery surrounding the rather novel summer premiere date for Season Seven of Game of Thrones, HBO has finally released a tangible date for the premiere, and they did it in style. Determined to cause a melt-down over the news, HBO created an elaborate way to reveal the premiere date, encasing the the much awaited information in a block of ice, which they challenged fans to melt via an interactive Facebook Live experience. Despite a few hiccups in the livestream, the ice eventually melted and the date was revealed. Game of Thrones will return to our screens on – July 16th 2017. Start planning...

Is THE MIGHTY EIGHTH Still A Mighty Go?

Is THE MIGHTY EIGHTH Still A Mighty Go?

The website NME is the only site out there reporting that THE MIGHTY EIGHTH miniseries is moving along. This, of course, is good news (if valid) as HBO fans have been waiting quite a long while for this companion piece to BAND OF BROTHERS and THE PACIFIC. The work, helmed by Tom Hanks’ Playtone, will be about the US Eighth Air Force’s bombing raids over Nazi Germany. It is another moment in the epic telling of WWII campaigns that Playtone has been chronicling, but it is taking far too long to get made for many eager fans. How does the site know of this development? Well, it seems that a movie entitled Magpie was shooting on location at...

HBO & BBC Up For SHIBDEN HALL Limited Series

HBO & BBC Up For SHIBDEN HALL Limited Series

HBO has an acclaimed history working with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC). They now add another production to the list entitled SHIBDEN HALL. It is said to be a limited dramatic series comprised of eight episodes and centers on one Anne Lister (pictured) and her quest to save her family home of Shibden Hall in Yorkshire, England. Evidently, Lister kept detailed diaries to which to draw from to bring the story to life. Our source details the plot as follows: Returning after years of exotic travel and social climbing, Anne determines to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, in Halifax. To do this, she must...

New Updated HBO Movie Premiere Opener

New Updated HBO Movie Premiere Opener

Back in the day, when HBO was building its channel it was proud to tout big theatrical premieres on Saturday nights. To usher in each movie there was always a stylized opener. I found a clip that illustrates the changing intros through the years. Watch it below. In the 1980’s the big splashy opening montage came to the screen, it is the one where we soar across the landscape and finally into the heavens where the HBO logo swoops in, and it stuck in everyone’s mind. It is in the montage above; remember it? Nowadays those graphics may not wow you, but the nostalgic impact of the clip and that stirring music sure do. It let you know that...

Girls: “Painful Evacuation”

Girls: “Painful Evacuation”

Well, I didn’t see that coming! If you haven’t seen episode 4 of Girls yet, please don’t read on – major spoiler ahead! I’m not a huge fan of this season of Girls so far, I think it has lost its edge, the thing that made it so unique from all the other drama’s out there. It was this generation’s Sex and the City but without all the unrealistic life expectations, however, it has mutated over the last few seasons into Lena Dunham’s vanity project and that rawness was replaced with self-indulgent, nonsensical episodes of friends hating friends. That hasn’t really changed in this season, however, we are seeing some...

Big Little Lies: “Living the Dream”

Big Little Lies: “Living the Dream”

Big Little Lies has been a genre-bender since the start. It is both eloquent and shallow, juxtaposing existential statements with superficiality and masked behavior. “Living the Dream,” as the episode’s title, is a clear representation of this. We arguably see the darkest segment of the series at this episode’s end. As someone who has not yet read the novel, I believe the show is evolving with wondrously macabre mystery under the guise of a cliché story about rich white women. Jane’s reminiscence of her sexual assault made “Living the Dream” a very difficult episode to digest, which was horrifically yet phenomenally executed....

HBO Drops First Teasers for Game of Thrones Season 7

HBO Drops First Teasers for Game of Thrones Season 7

It’s been a fairly quiet winter for fans of Game of Thrones, but it looks like HBO has decided to break its silence at last and start promoting the much-anticipated show which will air sometime this summer. In the past two days, HBO has dropped two, short teasers for Thrones, each featuring a small video clip that reinforces the teasers’ short message that the show is “in production.” With teasers rolling out in fairly short succession, we can’t help but hope that a full-length trailer is around the corner. In previous years, full-length Game of Thrones trailers were usually out in February, but given that...

Movie Review: X-Men: Apocalypse

Movie Review: X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse is the culmination of all the wrong-headed moves that have kept the X-Men movies from becoming more than 2nd string superhero movies. Some of them have been good, some of them have been downright bad, but none of them have ever really hit that high mark you might find in the Marvel/Disney cinematic universe. The problems stem from too many characters left undeveloped, uninteresting action, overly complicated plots, taking themselves waaaay too seriously, and coasting on the charisma of one character that rhymes with Schmulverine and the actor whose name rhymes with Schmugh Schmackman. They have done some things right,...

HBO Documentary Films: TICKLED and THE TICKLE KING

HBO Documentary Films: TICKLED and THE TICKLE KING

Overview: After stumbling upon a bizarre “competitive endurance tickling” video online, wherein young men are paid to be tied up and tickled, pop-culture reporter David Farrier reaches out to request a story from the company behind it. Delving deeper, he encounters fierce resistance, and the more he investigates, the stranger it gets, leading to the discovery of decades of abuse. Compelling and disturbing, Tickled illustrates the damage that can result from wealth, privilege and an obsession with power and control. He contacts Jane O’Brien Media, the company responsible for the competitions. To his surprise, Farrier is met with a...

Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls: “American Bitch”

Girls is doing one thing right this season, and that’s showcasing every character for who they really are, or rather, who they have come to be. “American Bitch” centers exclusively around Hannah and Chuck Palmer, with a dreamy and outlandish atmosphere akin to “One Man’s Trash,” the fifth episode of season two which Hannah spends with Patrick Wilson. “American Bitch,” however, is much more biting and sour. There is an anxious tension and passive aggression consistent through Hannah and Chuck’s conversations as the episode goes on, and though their ethical journey seems to end on a (mostly) agreeable note, it is clear...

Big Little Lies: “Serious Mothering”

Big Little Lies: “Serious Mothering”

Madeline wakes up from a dream that shows a man popping the cork off a champagne bottle, a woman walking barefoot on the beach in an unzipped dress, a quick shot of sex, and the closing of a door. This dream may mean something eventually, but from any information we have gotten from the first episode, we don’t know yet what that is. Madeline spends the morning staring out into the ocean until she is startled by Chloe. She then talks about what could be out there and what may lie beneath the surface. I wasn’t a fan of Madeline in the first episode and after seeing the second episode, I can’t say I’m a fan now, but this episode...

What’s On: HBO Schedule for March 2017

What’s On: HBO Schedule for March 2017

My how times flies. Here we are moving into March and as the months go on HBO tries to get us excited for its content. Two premieres happen in March, but mostly we have the continuation of our Sunday nights series. Many feel it is slim pickings, but there is still something on worth entertaining you whether you want to be there for the end of GIRLS or catch a movie you wouldn’t or couldn’t go to the Super 6 Cinema to see. Let’s see what HBO has to offer with What’s On.   Original Series: Based on Liane Moriarty’s best-selling book of the same name, the subversive, darkly comedic BIG LITTLE LIES tells the tale of three mothers...
