Information is scarce on the upcoming fourth installment of TRUE DETECTIVE, officially subtitled NIGHT COUNTRY.  We know that two-time Academy Award winner Jodie Foster leads the cast, a cast that has DEADWOOD and Dr. Who alums John Hawkes and Christopher Eccleston respectively. Academy Award-nominated director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) and acclaimed filmmaker Issa Lopez (Tigers Are Not Afraid) are the showrunners, and it has been speculated that the latter may direct the pilot. This is all news we have reported before. By the way, those two cited movies are superb films (in my humble opinion), and any involvement from these filmmakers is warmly welcomed.

People_KaliReisOne person that has not been mentioned much in press releases is Kali Reis, who co-stars as Detective Evangeline Navarro. Reis starred in the mystery film Catch the Fair One and is featured in the upcoming drama Black Flies. I have not seen the former film, and have no point of reference on how to quasi-gauge Reis’s acting chops. But Reis is actually an HBO alum. From 1973 to 2018, HBO showcased boxing on its main channel and on PPV.  The 140LB Cecilia Braekhus vs. Kali Reis match on May 5, 2018, was one of the last fights featured on HBO and it was a thriller. In an informal interview(s), Reis seems excited and optimistic about filming in Iceland, which will front for the Alaska setting. Of course, she did not reveal any plot details. Who knows, these premium cable shows are often so secretive that even the main cast is in the dark until a few weeks before filming.

Reis’s energy and compassion are not limited to the boxing ring. DailyMailUK published an article in August 2022, focusing on Reis’s advocacy for indigenous people’s rights.; focusing on missing indigenous women in the United States and Canada. Her fighting acuity, articulation, and raw emotion led her to be paired with director and screenwriter Josef Kubota Wladyka. The duo crafted the story for Catch the Fair One. This film is centered on a fictional Native American boxer who willingly enters into a sex-trafficking ring in order to find her missing younger sister. Despite the film having a limited release, the story and Reis’s performance garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences.

Reis’s performance also captured the attention of acting coach Sheila Gray, whose client list includes but is not limited to Lupita Nyong’o, Riz Ahmed, and Michael Gandolfini. Reis reached out to Gray and received numerous acting sessions to hone her raw talent. It is easy to pick any film from Jody Foster’s career and point out her acting range. Hawkes and Eccleston are no slacks either. Now, Reis was cast for strong reasons in an acclaimed HBO series that held its own during the 2010s. And also involved in front of the cameras are Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star LaBlanc and Joel D. Montgrand.

A few news outlets have “warned” readers that Reis is relatively new to acting and largely unknown. This is a seemingly relevant but yet moot point.  The same can be said about any individual breaking into the entertainment business. HBO’s THE WIRE had mostly new actors leading the series and TRUE DETECTIVE creator Nic Pizzolatto was a novelist that only wrote two episodes of television for AMC’s THE KILLING. Now Pizzolatto’s creation is on its fourth iteration on television’s most prestigious network. As more information trickles in, HBOWatch will be there to report.
