The Batman spin-off is expanding on the Matt Reeves Gotham iteration that saw Robert Pattinson step up as a dark and brooding Bruce Wayne and an unrecognisable Colin Farrell waddle into play as the Penguin. This spin-off will be all about Oswald Cobblepot, aka. Oz, aka The Penguin as he fights against Sofia Falcone for control over Gotham City. Sofia, daughter of Mario Falcone (played by John Turturro in The Batman) is, presumably, honouring her father’s legacy and preventing the infamous Spheniscidae from taking the reigns over his underground empire, although the era in which this is going to be set is yet to be revealed. Is it directly after the events of The Batman or is it years before?

Colin Farrell is already signed on to reprise his Penguin role and Christina Milioti of Palm Springs and Made for Love will take on the female lead role of Sofia. Matt Reeves’s production company will be at the producing helm of this mini-series that will pull focus onto one of Gotham’s most notorious villains.

With the second film of The Joker currently in production which spotlights the Joker and Harley Quinn respectively, it would seem that these DC spin-offs are proving popular and if Marvel and Disney+ are anything to go by, there could be dozens of mini-series exploding their way on to HBO Max’s already bursting docket. The great thing about DC is that their focus is much more on character and story than explosions and special effects so hopefully The Penguin will follow suit of The Batman and give us a dark and brooding neo-noir crime drama.
