Original Series Exclusive to HBO Max: A good number of new series dropped to HBO’s streaming site in the coming month. Unfortunately, WarnerMedia is so vague at times about what some of these shows are beyond just its title it is hard to figure out just what we should get excited for. Here are a few series we know something about:

We lead with what looks like a fun one – OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH!

This Max Original comedy series debuts with three episodes THURSDAY, MARCH 3 on HBO Max. The ten-episode season, from creator David Jenkins and Emmy-nominated executive producer Taika Waititi, continues with three episodes on March 10, two episodes on March 17, and concludes with two episodes on March 24.

OurFlagMeansDeath_titleThe unique new comedy is (very) loosely based on the true adventures of an 18th-century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby. After trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede becomes captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard, played by Waititi. Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas. In addition to Darby and Waititi, the ensemble cast stars Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matthew Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen and Leslie Jones.

THE TOURIST, starring Golden Globe nominee Jamie Dornan, debuts with all six episodes on THURSDAY, MARCH 03. Danielle Macdonald, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Damon Herriman, Alex Dimitriades, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Kamil Ellis. Joining Dornan are Dornan stars as a British man who finds himself in the glowing red heart of the Australian outback being pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and the man later wakes in the hospital, hurt, but somehow alive — except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback. Can this amnesiac piece his life back together? Binge it all at once or watch The Tourist at your own pace.

The ten-episode Max Original comedy, MINX, debuts THURSDAY, MARCH 17 on HBO Max, with two new episodes debuting each week through April 14. It is Max_Minx-Leads-300x176set in 1970s Los Angeles and centers around Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), an earnest young feminist who joins forces with a low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women. Also in the Cast are Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano and Oscar Montoya. Creator and showrunner Ellen Rapoport executive produces the series alongside Paul Feig and Dan Magnante for Feigco Entertainment, Ben Karlin and Rachel Lee Goldenberg, who also directed the pilot. Jake Johnson serves as a co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television is the studio.

With steamy & streamy sex on our minds now, we can also tell you about LUST. Starring Sofia Helin, Anja Lundqvist, Julia Dufvenius and Elin Klinga, the comedy series Lust is an outrageous and painfully honest comedy Max_Lust-Leadsabout four middle(ish) aged women in Stockholm, Sweden struggling to keep their libidos alive in a sexually frustrating world. When Anette (Sofia Helin), a public health researcher, conducts a study, “Sex is a Highway to Health”, she and her friends start to question their own sex lives. How has the decadent Swedish Sin been replaced by the mundane realities of Thursday sex, careers, kids, marriage, divorce and the never-ending struggle to stay young, fit and sexy? The eight-part comedy, directed by Ella Lemhagen, will premiere with all eight episodes FRIDAY MARCH 18.

“Hellooo.” Why, its famed French chef Julia Child on HBO Max. No, it is not her classic cooking show from PBS. The Max Original comedy series JULIA debuts with three episodes THURSDAY, MARCH 31 on HBO Max, followed by one episode weekly through May 5. is inspired by Julia Child’s extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history – the emergence of public television as a new social Max_Julia-Leadinstitution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the series is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic. The eight-episode series stars Sarah Lancashire (“Happy Valley”) as the title character and she’s joined by David Hyde Pierce, Bebe Neuwirth, Brittany Bradford, Fran Kranz and Fiona Glascott. Bon Appetit!

Here is a title that is surprisingly vague because it is from award winner Ava DuVernay. She produces and directs this work created and manned by Roberto Patino. It is called DMZ and it is a four-part limited series. It is based on the popular DC comic and set in New York City in the not-so-distant future when the country is embroiled in a bitter civil war. From IMDb (not WarnerMedia, terrible) we learn that Alma (Rosario Dawson), a medic, becomes a symbol of hope in a demilitarized Manhattan Island while trying to also find her lost son during the Second American Civil War. The work also stars Benjamin Bratt and Hoon Lee (Cinemax’ BANSHEE). It is expected to debut THURSDAY, MARCH 17.

There are a few more to mention here. How about RUXX, uploading TUESDAY, MARCH 08? It is an HBO International series out of Romania. Hip modern relationship drama that looks at the young generation of a country caught between the past and the future. It’s centered on the titular character, who’s navigating a demanding career, and, between her sister and her lover, her fair share of drama, in Romania’s capital city. A few interwoven stories address the various challenges faced by women in today’s Romania: from toxic relationships to casual misogyny, from societal barriers to mental blocks. Do you stay and fight? Do you cut and run?

Two days later, THURSDAY, MARCH 10, another foreign series uploads it is THEODOSIA. Theodosia Throckmorton (aka Theo, played by Eloise Little) is the smart, bold 14-year-old daughter of two intrepid Egyptologists, excavating in the Valley of the Kings in 1906. When Theo and her younger brother, invention-mad Henry, stumble upon a hidden tomb and a mysterious artifact, the ‘Eye of Horus’, Theo unlocks the power to see and perform true magic, thus discovering a whole new world of mystery as well as danger. She must do battle with ancient forces, dark magic and comic chaos as she and Henry, along with their friends, street magician Will and Egyptian Princess Safiya, try to survive teenage life, get through education and…save the whole world.

One more scripted title to look at; AMSTERDAM. The series follows the story of Nadia y Martín, who are trying to make it in the art scene in La Condesa, one of Mexico City’s trendy neighborhoods. They love each other, but things aren’t working out, so they decide to separate amicably and divide their belongings in a civilized way. The only thing they are unable to reach an agreement about is Amsterdam, the dog they rescued from the streets long ago. The solution is joint custody. Actors Naian González Norvind and Sebastián Buitrón bring the couple to life. The series, with ten 30-minute episodes, begins uploads SUNDAY, MARCH 20. Max_QueenStars-300x213

Just a couple to mention in unscripted fare. Apparently, the Max service doesn’t want the original HBO platform to have all the drag queen glory and has come forth with QUEEN STARS, showing up beginning THURSDAY, MARCH 24. HBO Max has tapped Pabllo Vittar, a recognized Brazilian queen for a new drag queen competition series. The series will highlight and showcase “razor-sharp drag queens in search of the pop crown”. Also find the Latino versions of Selena + Chef, arriving THURSDAY, MARCH 10. They are JUANPA + CHEF and SANDY + CHEF.

HBO Saturday Night Movies: We are used to settling in here with a look at the movies that debut Saturday nights. In March we will find two new titles and the return of two Same-Day Premieres, as we look at F9: The Fast Saga, West Side Story, The Many Saints of Newark and Dune. After that, we will also alert you to a couple other debuts.

Rev up your engines for the ninth time as the Fast & Furious franchise offers up its latest. It is F9: THE FAST SAGA. It races to your screen on SATURDAY, MARCH, 05 (8:00-10:23pm ET). In this one, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) is forced to confront the sins of his past in order to save those he loves most. Yeah, it all has to do with his estranged brother. With Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Michael Rooker, with Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron. Directed by Justin Lin; screenplay by Daniel Casey & Justin Lin, story by Justin Lin Movies_WestSideStory-2021& Alfredo Botello and Daniel Casey, based on characters created by Gary Scott Thompson. It is not often you get a vintage musical brought to new life. Steven Spielberg is behind the 2021 version of WEST SIDE STORY and HBO has it this month. It debuts SATURDAY, MARCH 12 (8:00-10:36pm ET) This new take adds a modern sensibility to the tale of a forbidden love affair that fuels the rivalry between street gangs in 1957 New York City. Starring Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Brian d’Arcy James, Corey Stoll, Josh Andres Rivera, with Rita Moreno, and introducing Rachel Zegler. Directed by Steven Spielberg; screenplay by Tony Kushner, based on the stage play, book by Arthur Laurents; play conceived, directed, and choreographed by Jerome Robbins. The 1961 version is on HBO Max in the TCM Hub.

We know we’ve shown the following trailer before but, come on, it’s special to classic HBO fans.

The Soprano and Moltisanti families finally return to their original HBO home when THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK debuts SATURDAY, MARCH 19 (8:00-10:00pm ET). The two-hour prequel movie has us seeing young Anthony Soprano growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history and becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities–and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano. Since David Chase has stated there will be no THE SOPRANOS sequel or prequel series, (and IMHO, there shouldn’t be) enjoy this again or for the first time. That takes us up to SATURDAY, MARCH 26 (8:00-10:35pm ET) and the return of the Same-Day Premiere of DUNE. The son of a noble family travels to a dangerous planet to avenge his father’s death and protect the most precious resource in the galaxy in this visually stunning adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Zendaya, with Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. Directed by Denis Villeneuve; screenplay by Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is so EPIC and it is only the first movie in a trilogy. Did I mention it was EPIC?

That fills up the Saturdays in March but two other movies get their debut on HBO as well. Well, let’s clarify, they arrive on the former HBONow site (and on HBOMax) but are not listed on the schedule for HBO’s TV channels. Just keep scratching your head, I can’t figure it out either. Anyway, the titles are HALLOWEEN KILLS, appearing on FRIDAY, MARCH 18, and the Same-Day Premiere KING RICHARD on THURSDAY, MARCH 24. That former title, of course, is a continuation of the Michael Myers rampage that Jamie Lee Curtis keeps returning to. She leads a vigilante mob against the slasher this time out. The latter title is about Serena and Venus Williams’ upbringing and training by their father; played by Oscar nominee for the Dad role, Will Smith.

Movies Exclusive to HBO Max: Two movies to note arrive on HBO Max. The first is entitled DRIVE MY CAR. It uploads on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 02. What is unique about this one is that this Japanese movie is nominated for Best Picture this year, a first for that country. Two years after his wife’s unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima), a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of Uncle Vanya at a theater festival in MaxMovies_DriveMyCar-300x167Hiroshima. There, he meets Misaki Watari (Toko Miura), a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900. As the production’s premiere approaches, tensions mount amongst the cast and crew, not least between Yusuke and Koshi Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke’s late wife. Forced to confront painful truths raised from his past, Yusuke begins – with the help of his driver – to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. The other movie is the HBO Original Movie MOONSHOT. This Warner Bros. streaming exclusive (3/31) is a new fantasy, sci-fi, rom-com starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse set to the futuristic backdrop of a terraformed Mars colonized by the best humanity has to offer. I’ve heard of traveling the world to get to your beloved lifemate, but to travel to another world just to link up with the current boyfriend? Well, that’s what happens when Moonshot uploads on THURSDAY, MARCH 31.

Docs_TheLarryDavidStory-LarryHBO Documentary Films: HBO’s direction to saddle us with celebrity biography documentaries is not my cup of tea but, HBO is at it again. This time it is a film about a familiar face at HBO. It is the one and only Larry David. I know, I know, curb your enthusiasm, [said sarcastically]. A two-part work about the mensch debuts back-to-back on TUESDAY, MARCH 01. THE LARRY DAVID STORY PART I: AMERICAN JEWBOY plays first (9:00-9:57pm ET) and THE LARRY DAVID STORY PART II: THE JEWISH FOUNTAINHEAD airs next (9:57-11:00pm ET). It explores his upbringing, his first artistic endeavors and moves into his career at Saturday Night Live, Seinfeld and his current gig. The other piece is from another person with a show on HBO. In the same vein as HBO Documentary Films: ALLEN VS FARROW comes the strong tale of abuse from Evan Rachel Wood of WESTWORLD. A two-part documentary produced and directed by Amy Berg (THE CASE AGAINST ADNAN SYED), follows actress and activist Wood as she takes her experience as a survivor of domestic violence to pursue justice, heal generational wounds, and reclaim her story. PHOENIX RISING had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and will debut on HBO on back-to-back nights. Part 1, PHOENIX RISING: DON’T FALL debuts TUESDAY, MARCH 15 (9:00-10:13pm ET) and Part 2, PHOENIX RISING: STAND UP debuts WEDNESDAY, MARCH 16 (9:00-10.22pm ET).

HBO MAX Original Documentary Films: WarnerMedia’s big streaming portal has its share of documentary films. Five of them upload on TUESDAY, MARCH 01 alone. BLOW UP OF BLOW-UP is a 52-minute look at the classic Italian movie Blow-Up and the talents behind it. CAMERAPERSON is Docs_FireBoys-Posterboth a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world; explore the world through the lens of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. FIREBOYS is about young boys fighting wildfire because it is another chance at life. This film tells the story of California’s incarcerated youth given a way out through trial by fire, literally, as they aid the fight against the continual wildfires the state suffers. In THE WORLD OF JACQUES DEMY, the late French director gets a tribute from his wife and actors who’ve worked for him. The last one is THE YOUNG GIRLS TURN 25. An annual recital program becomes an annual event in France and the original performers reunite. Catherine Deneuve is involved.

A big recent work drops on THURSDAY, MARCH 03 entitled GAMING WALL STREET. Narrated by Kieran Culkin (SUCCESSION), this two-part documentary explores the historic 2021 short squeeze of GameStop, and how a group of armchair investors and online vigilantes ultimately helped expose the dark underbelly of Wall Street. The trailer explains it in more detail.

Another multi-parter is in the line-up. From Ava DuVernay comes ONE PERFECT SHOT. This docu-series will feature directors deconstructing their most iconic images. Each episode will feature a director using state-of-the-art technology to step into their most iconic shots, walking through the scene and explaining the challenges, lessons and triumphs of creating that particular image. Each director will also dissect a shot from another filmmaker who has influenced their MxDocs_Traffickerswork. It will be film class 101, but alas, who is featured in this work is a mystery. It begins THURSDAY, MARCH 24. TRAFFICKERS: INSIDE THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE also arrives on THURSDAY, MARCH 24. The series follows the rise and demise of three infamous drug kingpins – known as ‘the Opium King,’ ‘The Mekong River Pirate’ and ‘The Playboy Drug Lord’ – in Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. The work uses exclusive interviews with members of the drug lords’ inner circles, drug enforcement agents, and victims’ families, as well archive footage and immersive recreations to give us a glimpse into one of the most elusive illegal drug hubs in the world. It comes to us via HBO Asia. On the last day of the month, THURSDAY, MARCH 31 we are offered BRENÉ BROWN: ATLAS OF THE HEART. HBO Max has given a five-episode order to Dr. Brené Brown’s docuseries. The series will utilize Brown’s extensive research to explore the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human and provide a new framework for cultivating meaningful connections. Anguish, wonder, awe, anxiety, envy, jealousy, resentment, compassion, empathy, disappointment, regret, and overwhelm are among the wide range of topics featured.

HBO Max Original Special: We can target one special coming to HBO Max for this post. It is entitled ON MY WAY WITH IRINA RIMES and it must be a concert special because Rimes is a Moldovan singer out of Romania. She is popular enough to be a judge on Romania’s version of The Voice. This HBO Europe event makes it to the U.S. via this WanerMedia service. It uploads on FRIDAY, MARCH 18 and it joins a recent slate of shows from international music stars.

HBO Max Kids & Family: Last month it was Looney Tunes. This month it is a smattering of yet more animated shenanigans with a number of franchised Kids_TeenTitansGocharacters. Max_DegrassiOldieIn scripted series, you can find the complete run of ONE TREE HILL. Next Month’s Tease: In April, is the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force chronicled in a movie, documentary or series?

Last month’s answer – WINNING TIME: THE RISE OF THE LAKERS DYNASTY looks like a down-to-the-buzzer slam-dunk-for-the-win for HBO this month. We asked you if you knew how it got the name ‘Lakers’. The answer – Though there are no natural lakes in L. A. the franchise was the Minneapolis Lakers first, hailing from the “land of 1,000 lakes”, Wisconsin.
