HBOWatch Movie Review: “John Wick Chapter 2”

HBOWatch Movie Review: “John Wick Chapter 2”

And so we return to the day to day life of John Wick, a semi-retired contract killer and guardian angel of good dogs everywhere. When we last left off, he was bloody, bruised, but no longer broken after gunning through the entirety of the Russian mob, after the son of their boss had killed his dog. And now we see him trying to retreat back into the life he briefly had prior to that with a new dog and hopefully, time to finish healing. Of course, we know that’s not how it’s going to work out. The first John Wick was a special kind of action movie. It had action and style to spare, but what really set it apart and made it memorable was...

Game of Thrones News Round-Up: Love, Death, and Hurricanes

It’s been a busy week for Game of Thrones! Season Eight filming is officially underway– sets are going up (Winterfell is almost restored to it’s proper glory) and stars are traipsing around Belfast. Those who enjoy Sophie Turner’s portrayal of Sansa Stark on the show, were delighted to learn Sunday via Instagram, that the 21 year old star was engaged to the singer, Joe Jonas. The couple were an item for a little less than a year, before committing to marriage, and Turner later admitted it was a bit of a surprise. Her co-stars, especially BFF Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, were quick to congratulate...

Vice Principals: “A Compassionate Man”

Vice Principals: “A Compassionate Man”

I was not a huge fan of this week’s episode, the humor has gone off the ball a bit and for the second week in a row, we are focusing on building the story of Lee Russell; thus, Gamby’s mission for justice has taken a back seat. I’m all for a Goggins heavy episode but the risk in doing so twice in a row is that you lose sight of the main storyline. My guess is that something big is about to happen and Lee Russell will be at the very heart of it, so it’s thought to be necessary to build his character, give his behavior some context and delve into his psyche. While some of the season’s funniest moments have come...

Are You Intrigued By the Interactive MOSAIC Coming to HBO?

HBO has dabbled in experimental projects before, but now a big name is behind an exciting unfolding story known as MOSAIC. As previously reported, Steven Soderbergh is behind the project. Via a press release, we learn of just what he is attempting. Steven Soderbergh (Traffic; HBO’s “BEHIND THE CANDELABRA) debuted the first look at MOSAIC, a groundbreaking app that allows viewers to choose how they experience the story. [It is] billed as the world’s leading immersive storytelling event that highlights the very best interactive, cutting-edge storytelling experiences from around the world.   Soderbergh [states] “MOSAIC is a...

The Deuce: “Why Me?”

The Deuce: “Why Me?”

We’re over the midseason mark and seeing the evolution of characters as time goes on. Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) believes she’s made her way off the street and in front of the camera, but slow work and a quick move by her lover remind her the street is never far away. Vinnie (James Franco) has come a long way from tending bar at two different pubs to now being an investor in a massage parlor/whorehouse. And the streets themselves even take a turn as changes in obscenity laws and political moves by the police force crackdowns. What a week! Candy/Eileen continues to be my favorite character as she strives to find the best way to...

Cinemax Ramping Up for A Big 2018!

Cinemax Ramping Up for A Big 2018!

Cinemax still has been churning out movies every night of the week but grew a bit quiet after they canceled QUARRY after one season and promised a return of both STRIKE BACK and OUTCAST that never came. Well, they will return in 2018 and Cinemax is excited about and hope subscribers are also. And they are not the only projects forthcoming. We start with snippets from an official press release: Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming stated, “We are very excited to present a slate that moves CINEMAX back in the direction of fun, often adrenalized, and always entertaining series,” says “We have strategically...

HBOWatch Movie Review: “Fifty Shades Darker”

HBOWatch Movie Review: “Fifty Shades Darker”

I don’t know where to start with Fifty Shades Darker, it has easily placed itself in the ‘one of the worst films I have ever seen’ category, along with its buddy Fifty Shades of Grey and I’m saving a special place in there for Fifty Shades Freed which is, unfortunately, coming out next Valentines Day. They, of course, make up the three filmed installments based on the novels by E. L. James.  There are so many things that are wrong with this film, not just the utter lack of chemistry between Christian and Ana, but the fact that their relationship is so unbelievably boring that there really isn’t a story there to tell. Again,...

Game of Thrones News Round Up: Gearing up For Season 8

Game of Thrones News Round Up: Gearing up For Season 8

It may feel like we will have to wait forever until the final, eighth season of Game of Thrones, but the cast and crew of the show are currently hard at work and back on set. Almost all of the Thrones actors have returned to the show’s filming hub of Belfast, and sets are being built back up and prepared for imminent use (although this year, HBO is going to dramatic lengths to keep peeping paparazzi away, including erecting huge walls around key areas and looking into trained eagles to take down pesky drones). According to Liam Cunningham, who plays the wholesome smuggler, Davos Seaworth, the cast participated in a script...

Vice Principals: “Think Change”

Vice Principals: “Think Change”

The hunt for Gamby’s shooter is still going but takes a back seat this week. In this episode, we get to know Lee more and how he has become the person he is. When we first meet Lee, we can tell he’s kind of a conniving guy and that lying seems to come pretty easy for him. And as the series has continued, that behavior has become more abundant and obvious.  Lee is really good at being a sneaky bad guy. But people aren’t born that way. Lee finds out at the beginning of the episode that his father has passed, which means he will need to be gone for a day for the funeral, leaving Gamby in charge. From the start, you...

The Deuce: “What Kind of Bad?”

The Deuce: “What Kind of Bad?”

Our characters continue to delve deeper into business deals, alienated relationships and abusive situations – either at the hands of pimps, potential johns or just life on the streets. We know that The Deuce is a show about the seedier side of life in the 1970s, in certain areas of New York. Corruption is everywhere and it seems like no one is immune to taking a bribe – as long as it stays under wraps. Police take payouts in order stay out of certain geographic areas. Pimps trade their girls like it’s no big deal – after all, their girls are nothing but a source of profitable holes (sorry if that is too blunt but let’s face it,...

The show will make itself back around in January 2018. Joining the leads again are Molly Shannon as Diane, Frances’ high-strung friend, who has a successful husband, a beautiful house and no children; Talia Balsam as Dallas, Frances’ close friend, who has been both widowed and divorced; Tracy Letts as Nick, Diane’s husband; Sterling Jerins as Lila, Frances’ and Robert’s daughter; and Charlie Kilgore as Tom, their son. Season Two finds Frances and her now...

Will WESTWORLD Show Us New Worlds In Season Two?

Will WESTWORLD Show Us New Worlds In Season Two?

At this time we are not sure when we will see the second season of WESTWORLD but you can be sure that HBO will be teasing us with it up until then. It seems one such tidbit regarding the show has surfaced. At a recent event, the Vanity Fair Summit (whatever that is), the executive producers  Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were asked point blank why Rome World and Medieval World were no referenced in Season One. Their response was “Well, we had to save something for Season Two.” Was that just a sarcastic throwaway quip or a hint of what is to come? The verdict is still out. Even a re-watch of the Tease out there doesn’t reveal any...

HBO Comedy Special: FELIPE ESPARZA: TRANSLATE THIS – Review

HBO Comedy Special: FELIPE ESPARZA: TRANSLATE THIS – Review

Well, first things first, who is Felipe Esparza and why does he warrant an HBO comedy special? Evidently, he is the winner of 2010’s run of Last Comic Standing. Yeah, I didn’t know that either and since then he has honed his shtick and even acted some. Superstore, anyone? He even has a weekly podcast out called “What’s Up Fool?” so I guess he is doing alright and I’m the one out of the loop because I never heard of him. Well, I’ve heard him now and he has a story to tell and he makes it funny. That is a good quality for a comedian to have. He admits in the clip I offer below that he has added a bit to create a character who is...

Vice Principals: “The King”

Vice Principals: “The King”

This weeks episode of Vice Principals added a few more unexpected twists and turns to the tale of “Who shot Neal Gamby?” Despite Lee Russell’s spiral into what we can only presume will be the madness that ultimately destroys him, it was calm ol’ Ray Liptrapp that stole the show for me. Neal is still on the prowl and decides to turn his attentions to Snodgrass’ new beau Brian (Fisher Stevens) who Gamby now holds as his number one suspect, however, Brian clearly is not the perpetrator and Gamby is starting to clutch at straws. Meanwhile, Russell is a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown as he struggles to gain...
