The game’s the same, it just got more fierce

Finally, The Wire will re-air in HD December 26thhttp://hbowatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/the-wire-intro.mp4 I have never been to Baltimore, but I still find myself obsessed with the city. Two things recently rekindled this love. One being the immersive podcast Serial, which detailed the murder of a Baltimore high school student and mysteriously disorganized trial that followed. The other was the announcement that The Wire was being remastered and reaired in HD.Obsessive attention to detail and realism Through annual The Wire viewings and the continual pressure I place on everyone I know to spend the time immersing themselves in...

Two Sarahs, Parker & Silverman, Preparing HBO Pilots!

Two Sarahs, Parker & Silverman, Preparing HBO Pilots!

You recognized the lady above, right? That is Sarah Jessica Parker who, of course, personified Carrie Bradshaw on SEX AND THE CITY on HBO for six seasons between 1998 and 2004. Well, now she hopes for another half-hour comedy on the network. Yeah, you are reading that right. She is to star and executive produce DIVORCE. It is said to be a comedic take of a very, very, long divorce and evidently whomever SJP plays it will surely be the female lead in the marriage gone bad. The concept is just being written as a pilot right now. It is being penned by British writer and actress Sharon Horgan and even though no director is mentioned it is...

HBO’s “Yearender” Trailer Provides First Glimpse at Several New 2015 Series

HBO sure knows how to make a trailer. Last year’s “yearender” trailer was just how it sounds: a trailer at the end of the year that wraps up a calendar full of great programming and previews the coming year’s attractions.  HBO saw several series give their final curtain call first with True Blood, then Boardwalk Empire and more recently The Newsrooms saying goodbye forever. But while all may be quiet on HBO right now for the Holidays, 2015 brings with it more new shows than ever before. We know it’s hard to believe but for each of the aforementioned closing series HBO has another lined up that promises similar...

HBO Boxing’s Best of 2014

HBO Boxing’s Best of 2014

Next week HBO will be serving up a series of its top fights of the year for several nights in a row starting Saturday December 27th through Tuesday December 30th.  They can also be seen anytime On Demand and on HBOGO.Saturday December 27th Golovkin vs Geale and Golovkin vs Rubio (11:30 pm) These two fights were the best opponents the fearsome fighter from Kazakhstan could get in the ring this year.  Geale was a quality fighter from England who gave his best in a high action, violent brawl. Rubio on the other hand came into the fight for a payday and nothing more in this farce of a fight. Golovkin stayed the course on his way up the pound...

David Fincher Planning Three Shows for HBO!

David Fincher Planning Three Shows for HBO!

Many around here have been excited about the notion of David Fincher (pictured right) working with HBO. It started back on 09.09.13 when HBOWatch first posted that Fincher wanted to bring the U. K series UTOPIA to HBO’s audience. Then on 09.09.14 (how about the coincidence) we reported that Fincher was teaming up with famed crime fiction writer James Ellroy(also pictured at lower left) on a potential project. Of the two concepts only additional mention of UTOPIA surfaced again. On 09.20.14 we announced that Fincher would be directing the entire first season of UTOPIA himself if the work was to be picked up. We are still waiting on...

Movie Review: Divergent

Movie Review: Divergent

I’m a huge fan of dystopian literature, especially young adult novels. Having enjoyed the books, I was thrilled to hear Divergent was being adapted.  Based in a post-apocalyptic Chicago, the society remaining has created a faction system.  When parents have children, they are raised in their parents’ faction until they turn 16 at which point they take an aptitude test to determine in which faction they truly belong.  The factions are Abnegation (the selfless), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), and Dauntless (the brave).  If you cannot pick a faction or fail out of your choice, you become...

The Newsroom: “What Kind of Day Has It Been”

This past Sunday marked the series finale for Aaron Sorkin’s controversial show, The Newsroom. Public opinion on the series has swayed heavily in both directions. Some praise it as the most intelligent, eye-opening series to ever grace the screen, while others condemn it as a self-righteous, misogynistic free-for-all. To me, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. ‘What Kind of Day Has It Been,’ like the series as a whole, is a healthy combination of good and bad, leaving plenty of room for debate. The episode cuts back and forth between Charlie Skinner’s funeral and the formation of News Night 2.0 three years...

GETTING ON Season Finale: “Doctor Death”

GETTING ON Season Finale: “Doctor Death”

We come to the season finale of what this writer considers the best comedy on HBO after VEEP. You can agree or disagree, of course, in the comment portion below; in fact, I hope you do. In seeing the preview for Episode Six, attached to last week’s Episode Five post, one glaring moment stuck out. It was in the board room when Dr. Paul states that the hospice program has gotten the unsavory title of being ‘a death mill.’ That makes it sound like the staff of the Billy Barnes ward does not end this second season on a happy note.   Episode Six (Season Finale) – “Doctor Death” Well, we always knew the underlying...

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

The true story of the 47 Ronin is that of the samurai of the same number in the early 1700s who avenged their lord after he was compelled to commit Seppoku (suicide where in one stabs themselves in the stomach) and in turn did the same as the Japanese honor code, Bushido, dictates. 47 Ronin, the movie, is weird. In good ways and bad. Thankfully, the good is genuinely good and the bad is fascinatingly bad, so much so that it’s worth a recommendation just to see what happens when so much goes wrong in a movie ala Green Lantern or The Lone Ranger. Feudal Japan. Everyone cares about their honor and their customs. No one questions falling...
