Viola Davis to Star as Harriet Tubman in HBO Treatment

Viola Davis to Star as Harriet Tubman in HBO Treatment

Everyone wants a turn at an HBO project. It is Viola Davis’ turn. Davis (pictured), from ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder will now star as slave turned abolitionist Harriet Tubman for an HBO films presentation. Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland, escaped in 1849 and led countless slaves from the South to freedom along what was called the Underground Railroad. It was a series of hideaways and safehouses on a route to then northern states and freedom. The biopic is said to be based on a noted work about the the heroic Tubman entitled “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman,” by historian Kate Clifford Larson. Those...

Silicon Valley: “Adult Content”

At long last, things are looking up for the Pied Piper team! Let’s just look past the fact that they’re committing highly illegal acts to get ahead. Still, to be fair, the group of techies has been repeatedly sabotaged for quite some time, so their era of retribution has been long overdue. Last week left off with the Pied Piper gang finding out that Branston Ventures stole Richard’s compression algorithm, at least in part, to successfully create a 4K livestream platform. This was, of course, the Pied Piper team’s own fault to begin with, for disclosing practically the entire algorithm during a business meeting. They are now...

Game of Thrones: “The Gift”

Game of Thrones: “The Gift”

‘The Gift,’ like much of this season, is a culmination of awesome, attention-grabbing scenes along with a number of head-shaking disappointments. Season 5 has certainly been a roller-coaster ride, especially for book enthusiasts who have no idea where the storylines are heading. A number of characters and storylines have been left out, changed, adapted, or held true to the source material. Ok, that last part was bullshit, but I’ve said it over and over again — Weiss and Benioff always manage to get the characters from A to B, they just happen to take certain liberties as to what happens on that path. So the snowball...

Tennis returns to HBO…sort of…with 7 DAYS IN HELL coming in July

Every year from 1975 to 1999 HBO carried Wimbledon Tennis with commentary handled by pros like, Billie Jean King, Brian McKay, Jim Lampley and others. But, oh times have changed and HBO is treating tennis quite differently today. Now HBO is giving it the comedy treatment with something called 7 DAYS IN HELL.  HBOWatch told you this was in the works way back in July of last year. It shows up on HBO’s line-up this July. Here are the details straight from a Press Release:      The exclusive HBO presentation 7 DAYS IN HELL will debut SATURDAY, JULY 11 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), during the second weekend of this year’s Wimbledon...

Movie Review: Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Movie Review: Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the sequel to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, and carries a lot over from the first film. Both Dawn, and Rise are the newly rebooted origin of the 60’s Sci-Fi franchise Planet Of The Apes. Despite the long history of the series, and the extremely long titles the film can easily stand on it’s own without the other films. There are a startling amount of characters that return in this film but their relationship with Caesar (the titular ape) can be easily surmised through the films excellent use of world building. The world of Dawn is truly outstanding. There are small elements hidden within scenes...

HBO Documentary Films: SOUTHERN RITES

HBO Documentary Films: SOUTHERN RITES

Overview: SOUTHERN RITES follows photographer Gillian Laub as she returns to the Georgia community where she documented segregated proms in photographs that garnered national attention when they were published in 2009. The proms are now integrated, but in the aftermath of a fatal shooting of a young black man and in the midst of a heated local election, the community still grapples with issues of race that extend well beyond the school. Directed by Laub and executive produced by Oscar-winning musician John Legend, the timely documentary returns Laub to Montgomery County to document a newly integrated prom and an historic campaign to elect...

Silicon Valley: “Homicide”

Silicon Valley: “Homicide”

With Hooli’s relentless conniving against Pied Piper, such as the lawsuit, buyout attempt, and now 4K live-streaming, it was a welcome change to see them fail miserably at their attempt at new innovation. “Homicide” opens with Gavin Belson gloating about their live UFC Internet stream in 4K resolution, which the Pied Piper team watches in anticipation hoping for a failure. Their wish is immediately granted as Nucleus begins to glitch during the live-stream, eventually becoming overly pixelated and completely freezing. While this isn’t necessarily a major win for Pied Piper, it definitely works in their favor by giving them the...

Game of Thrones: “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”

If you have felt like I have this season, then you undoubtedly are just waiting for all the build up to come to a haunt and everything to come crashing down on Game of Thrones. Thankfully, it looks like just that has started with this week’s episode of Game of Thrones. The past five episodes have really helped to set up the season (as they should) and this past week, we saw the fruits of all of the planning finally start to emerge. Our first large payoff for on this week’s episode was undoubtedly Arya and her quest to become “No One”. This is a storyline that started long ago and we knew that Arya would end up at the...

HBO Films: BESSIE Review

HBO Films: BESSIE Review

This post is not going to offer a scene by scene recap of the HBO Films presentation that debuted on SATURDAY, MAY 16th, but it is going to offer up a look into the style and tone of the film in hopes that fans of HBO will take in the two hour experience for themselves. It is a movie not to be missed. Queen Latifah bares it all literally and figuratively in BESSIE a vanity project for her that is a solid portrayal of songstress Bessie Smith – Empress of the Blues. HBO Films has once again offered up a richly produced and designed TV-movie that at times beautifully depicts the wardrobes, music and sights of the day. At other times it shows...

It’s almost here, The Wire’s complete series on Blu-ray will be available to all for purchase June 2nd, 2015. For those of you who already have the DVD box set, I can understand why you might groan ever so slightly, because I know in the back of your mind you’re seriously debating getting the Blu-ray set as well despite the fact that you already have the DVDs alongside a subscription to Amazon Prime and HBO Go. Because most fans of The Wire will never be able to resist the opportunity to own a more in-depth item for their collection about one of the greatest television dramas of all time. So it won’t take much to convince...

VICE: “A Prayer For Uganda” / “Kidneyville”

VICE: “A Prayer For Uganda” / “Kidneyville”

Overview: Virulent homophobia is on the rise in Uganda. In 2014, the Ugandan president signed into law an anti-homosexuality bill, which went as far as mandating the death penalty for being gay. After an international outcry, the law was struck down, but a new version is in the works. Isobel Yeung went to Uganda to meet some of the anti-gay leaders teaching intolerance to Uganda’s youth, and uncovered disturbing ties between their message and the lessons that American fundamentalists have been pushing for years. There are more than 100,000 people in dire need of a kidney transplant in the U.S., and more than 4,000 could die this year...
