The Newsroom: “What Kind of Day Has It Been”

This past Sunday marked the series finale for Aaron Sorkin’s controversial show, The Newsroom. Public opinion on the series has swayed heavily in both directions. Some praise it as the most intelligent, eye-opening series to ever grace the screen, while others condemn it as a self-righteous, misogynistic free-for-all. To me, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. ‘What Kind of Day Has It Been,’ like the series as a whole, is a healthy combination of good and bad, leaving plenty of room for debate. The episode cuts back and forth between Charlie Skinner’s funeral and the formation of News Night 2.0 three years...

GETTING ON Season Finale: “Doctor Death”

GETTING ON Season Finale: “Doctor Death”

We come to the season finale of what this writer considers the best comedy on HBO after VEEP. You can agree or disagree, of course, in the comment portion below; in fact, I hope you do. In seeing the preview for Episode Six, attached to last week’s Episode Five post, one glaring moment stuck out. It was in the board room when Dr. Paul states that the hospice program has gotten the unsavory title of being ‘a death mill.’ That makes it sound like the staff of the Billy Barnes ward does not end this second season on a happy note.   Episode Six (Season Finale) – “Doctor Death” Well, we always knew the underlying...

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

Movie Review: 47 Ronin

The true story of the 47 Ronin is that of the samurai of the same number in the early 1700s who avenged their lord after he was compelled to commit Seppoku (suicide where in one stabs themselves in the stomach) and in turn did the same as the Japanese honor code, Bushido, dictates. 47 Ronin, the movie, is weird. In good ways and bad. Thankfully, the good is genuinely good and the bad is fascinatingly bad, so much so that it’s worth a recommendation just to see what happens when so much goes wrong in a movie ala Green Lantern or The Lone Ranger. Feudal Japan. Everyone cares about their honor and their customs. No one questions falling...

HBO Documentary Films: REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG

Overview: Passionate and gracefully outspoken, Susan Sontag was a prominent literary, political and feminist icon. As a critic, novelist, teacher, filmmaker, activist and iconoclast, her love of learning and examinations of cultural and political ideas made her both a compelling public figure and a significant 20th-century critic. A complex person, Sontag fiercely guarded her privacy, despite her boldness in the literary world. A layered look at a towering cultural critic and writer whose works on photography, war, and illness, still resonate today, REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG debuted MONDAY, DECEMBER 08 at 9:00pm.This documentary features a...

The Newsroom: “Oh Shenandoah”

The Newsroom: “Oh Shenandoah”

Wow. Just wow. You know… With the first couple of episodes of The Newsroom‘s third season, I was intrigued. I wondered where it was going to go, and it was nice to see Kat Dennings, one of my favorite young actresses, playing a character that isn’t a comedic foil. With the next couple of episodes, I started to realize that Sorkin was inadvertently turning me against these characters by showing that they are just as smug and outdated as the world around them. Now, don’t get me wrong. These characters were always obnoxious, self-righteous and arrogant; but throughout two seasons, they’ve at least been watchable....

HBO Go Enhancements are Coming in Time for Game of Thrones

HBO Go Enhancements are Coming in Time for Game of Thrones

Reports that look to be legitimate have been making the rounds in recent days. You can interpret them yourself if you so choose but the headline you’re probably most interested in is this: HBO is hoping to get their a la carte HBOGo subscription-without-cable plan out to the public in time for the launch of Game of Thrones season 5.  While no air date has been announced, based on past season premiere dates we’re placing that window around the beginning of April 2015. HBO Go is a mostly stable program, despite some reports to the contrary. On any given day the servers are humming like a river through the river-lands. But on big...

GETTING ON: “The Revolving Door Admit”

GETTING ON: “The Revolving Door Admit”

Before we launch into this episode we need to make our way past the preview for it which you can find at the Episode #4 posting. There seems to be a lot in the mix for the fifth installment. As we continue the theme set by this episode’s title we discover that there really appears to be a continual revolving door of problems and personalities as we ramp up to the season’s end.  This show sticks to a formula  that works when it comes to its story structure  so why change it.   Episode # 5- “The Revolving Door Admit” This is an episode filled with a number of threads and moments that you needed to pay attention to or...

THE LEFTOVERS Season Two – Some of the Cast Departs!

THE LEFTOVERS Season Two – Some of the Cast Departs!

One of the reporters for from one of our top sources, Deadline.com, snagged some inside scoop on the second season of THE LEFTOVERS. It could either be good news or bad news depending on what you think of the Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta produced series that ran on HBO this past summer. It is reported that “a large portion of the fourteen regular cast members in Season 1 – virtually all in the supporting roles  – won’t be returning in Season 2.” Okay, so the post title above may be accurate, but a bit sensationalistic. If you think about it all it shouldn’t be a big shock that some of the cast would not be returning....
