Hello Ladies: The Complete Series and the Movie DVD Review

Hello Ladies: The Complete Series and the Movie DVD Review

Hello Ladies, the complete series and Movie arrives on DVD this week. Here’s our review of the set! Packaging: The DVD set of Hello Ladies: The Complete Series and the Movie contains 3 discs (two for the series, and one for the movie.   Content: Hello Ladies was Stephen Merchant’s first high-profile project after his celebrated creative collaborations with Ricky Gervais. Seeing Merchant on his own allowed fans to get a feel for his more abrasive, take-no-prisoners approach to comedy. His protagonist Stuart is not a nice man; he’s a Nice Man ™, and Merchant makes sure we understand that distinction. Every move that Stuart...

Hello Ladies: The Movie review

Hello Ladies: The Movie review

HBO’s comedies are sometimes woefully under appreciated, and it was with great disappointment that I read about the cancellation of my current favorite HBO comedy: Hello Ladies. Luckily for fans of the short-lived series, HBO approved a movie send-off. The first season of Hello Ladies revolved around Stephen Merchant’s character Stuart, and his repeated attempts to find a supermodel who would sleep with him. When we left him at the end of the season, Stuart was finally presented with a choice to be with the model of his dreams, and he elected to walk away in order to comfort his friend and roommate Jessica, who had just been...

No Season 2 for Merchant’s Hello Ladies

No Season 2 for Merchant’s Hello Ladies

HBO has opted out of a second season of Stephen Merchant’s Hello Ladies.  We’re actually not sure whether a Hello Ladies season 2 was even on the table but Deadline now confirms that the show will end with a special similar to that made for Life’s Too Short, another Merchant project on HBO. At HBOWatch, many of us enjoyed the series and thought it was quite funny.  We reviewed several episodes here if you’re interested.  We’ll let you know when the special gets a firm date and if and when the compete set of episodes make’s its way to DVD and Blu-Ray. We hope Mr. Merchant continues with HBO in some...

“Hello Ladies” Episodes 5 & 6 Review

“Hello Ladies” Episodes 5 & 6 Review

“Party Time” Episode Five has Wade just moved into a new super tiny apartment and inviting Stuart over. Now, remember: Stuart is not a supportive friend. Stuart is an ass. So Wade gives Stuart a “grand tour,” which is easy because everything is in one room. Turn around and BOOM! bed; turn again, it’s the BOOM! kitchen. Wde can have breakfast in bed, and dinner, and lunch, and dessert… Basically, with only one chair in the entire apartment thing, everything in bed. Stuart is unimpressed – and I go, “Come on, Stuart! Be nice to Wade, dang it!” – and talks about his party. One of...

Hello Ladies: Episodes 3 & 4 – “It’s All Good” and “Cringeworthy Moments Abound”

Hello Ladies: Episodes 3 & 4 – “It’s All Good” and “Cringeworthy Moments Abound”

Episode 3: The Date Marc: Are you AG? I just want to make sure. You can never be too careful these days. If I had waited until the end of the review to ask, something may have happened. Comment below that you’re AG so I know you’re all good. Phew, that’s a relief. I just want to make sure you didn’t slip in your bathtub. VL: AG here! Thanks for checking. I’ll text you in 30 minutes to double check. So Stuart’s enrolled in a yoga class. Stuart likes yoga? No, he likes ladies in yoga pants. Unfortunately, they don’t like him. It’s only behind the smoothie bar that Stuart finds someone who won’t...

“Hello Ladies” Makes Its Grand Debut

“Hello Ladies” Makes Its Grand Debut

On September 29th, HBO debuted its new comedy, “Hello, Ladies.” Overall, it had lots of hits, a few misses, and a leftover feeling of melancholy that reminds me of why I haven’t been in the dating scene for six years. (Side note: that’s actually the reason I wanted this show. As a single woman looking for a man these days, I try desperately to avoid some of the men seen in this show.) There are so many people – men and women – who don’t care about much beyond one night. Do I want the characters in “Hello, Ladies” to have long, great relationships? Yes. It gives me hope for the world....
