Two of the biggest characters from the Green Lantern Corps get to play out their exploits on HBO someday soon. LANTERNS is its name and it is spearheaded by Damon Lindelof, who already gave us DC’s WATCHMEN series.

In association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, HBO has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for this new drama series based on the iconic DC title. The logline given at this time to describe the series is as follows:

The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

HalJordanJohnStewart-1024x569That warrants a bit of opinion if you ask me. I haven’t read a Green Lantern comic in decades but it was always a favorite. It is way too early to judge what this series will look like but I pull two thoughts from that one-sentence description above. The Corps is an intergalactic band of sorts, each chosen by a power ring. I am excited to see that we get to GL’s for this story in Stewart and Jordan but to keep the tale Earth-bound doesn’t. That’s just a gut reaction to the logline, I am sure what the production gives us will be pretty awesome and hopefully will have enough longevity to expand from the Earth-bound saga into something bigger, assuming Zaslav will release the money, of course. Plenty of time to dissect and ponder, but for now we take the news about more HBO-quality DC entertainment! Here is hoping superhero fatigue is not a factor.

The production involved? Emmy-nominee Chris Mundy (TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s WATCHMEN and THE LEFTOVERS) and Eisner Award winner Tom King (Supergirl) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.

About the new venture Casey Bloys stated, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”

The James and Peter referred to are, of course, DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran who said, “We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”

Are you excited about the DC content? Don’t forget there is Season Two of PEACEMAKER on Max to look out for as well. Note to self: generate a post about that John Cena gig soon.
