In the past many Xbox users have complained about having to pay not only Netflix and HBO but Microsoft as well to access their respective streaming media apps through the video game console. An Xbox Live Gold Membership (about 50 bucks per year) was required to even download the apps needed to  utilize an Xbox as a typical home streaming device in the same way you’d do so for free with a Roku or Amazon Fire TV.

All that changed this week when Microsoft announced that they were “Delivering More Choices” for fans along with a price drop for the console itself (to $399) saying:

“…we’re bringing more value to Xbox Live Gold members and offering all Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners access to entertainment apps whether or not you have an Xbox Live Gold membership.”

Big move, Microsoft! But one that should have happened a long time ago in this writer’s opinion.  In fact, as a non-Xbox owner I assumed this is how it worked already! The good news is that they’re offering refunds as well for those who subscribed to Xbox Live Gold already thinking it would be required.

Bottom line for HBO fans? If you have an Xbox and you want to use that as your HBO Go streaming device you won’t have to pay anything extra!  We keep track of all the ways to connect to HBO Go here for those interested in finding the best fit for themselves.

Man, I’m so far behind in technology. Some days that’s a great thing, other days it isn’t.
