HBO-Logo-SpaceHonestly, I think I say the same thing every time this part of the year rolls around. The biggest TV season of the year is about to launch with plenty of new shows & returning favorites. But, around here, no matter what is on the dial there is always time for HBO, especially since it is offering up another go with THE DEUCE. Just sayin’…some of us are indeed loyal. Here is a look at what HBO offers for September 2018.

Original Series: Featuring an acclaimed ensemble cast led by James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and executive produced by David Simon, George Pelecanos, Nina K. Noble and James Franco, season two of THE DEUCE is upon us. The season, debuting SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 09 (9:00-10:00pm), finds its protagonists living at the apex of the Golden Age of Porn: when the dream of a mainstream X-rated film business is a credible reality, and the free-for-all sex trade of New York’s Times Square is at its gaudy, unrestrained height. Picking up in late 1977 (five years after season one), the show captures the disco era in all its excesses before developers, crack cocaine, AIDS and videotapes conspire to end the debauched glory of the time. What a rich, raw, raunchy time to recapture!

Other Movies and Shows: HBO is forever adding older movies onto the schedule. This month it includes BRING IT ON: ALL OR NOTHING, THE LAYOVER, THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS, THE SCORPION KING, STEP UP, THE CORE, TIM BURTON’S CORPSE BRIDE and JUNGLE MASTER. No, I know you are saying that you know you have seen some Movies_TheCore-300x202of these on before and that might be true but never on “HBO Main Channel.” For example, Burton’s stop-motion movie may have played hard on HBO Family but hasn’t been on the main channel ever. I beg to differ on that as well, but I just run with the marketing given. There are also plenty of movies appearing on the channel for just one showing so if you want to watch HANNIBAL you can catch on the TV only on 09.03 and GOOD WILL HUNTING only on 09.19. Also in September is HBO FIRST LOOK: THE OLD MAN & THE GUN with Clint Eastwood. Over on HBO2, there is a marathon of all eight installments of SHARP OBJECTS on 09.01 and a marathon of Season One of SUCCESSION on 09.02.

HBO’s Other Channels: Now a few titles from the other channels on the dial. HBO Latino: This channel never lacks in new content. PREACH is a short film of a lady preaching about gender equality; One of the greatest salsa singers of all time, Gilberto Santa Rosa takes us on a journey through his first 40 years of music in the historic concert special GILBERTO SANTA ROSA, 40…Y CONTANDO. There is also a featurette about him called CONVERSATIONS WITH GILBERTO SANTA ROSA. A few months after witnessing the murder of her father, a vengeful young womanPeople_GilbertoSantaRosa-300x206 crosses paths with the man she believes to be his killer in director Laura Mora’s powerful, semi-autobiographical film MATAR A JESUS (Killing Jesus), debuting 09.21. On 09.38 is LA PALABRA DE PABLO (Pablo’s World) about an upper-middle-class Salvadoran family & its struggles; inspired by “Othello.”  HBO Family: Who knew the 1989 Jim Belushi canine cop movie K-9 was popular enough to warrant two sequels K-911 and K-9 P. I.? Well, it did and they appear all together on this channel.  There is also the 1978 version of HEAVEN CAN WAIT with Warren Beatty and a great movie for any kid called ENVY. It’s actually a comedy with Ben Stiller and Jack Black. HBO Signature: Surely I don’t have to describe greats like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, ARTHUR, THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS, SHINE or YOU’VE GOT MAIL to you. But you might need to know that SHATTERED GLASS is about a ‘golden boy’ reporter that fabricates stories for ‘The New Republic’ magazine and is subsequently exposed or that THE BROTHERS MCMULLEN is a 1995 movie about siblings having various woes with women. They all appear on this channel in September.  HBO Comedy: Laugh it up, furball with the comedic romps of ROCKET SCIENCE, MARCI X and JUST VISITING. The first one is about a stuttering New Jersey teen who competes on a debate squad to win over his ambitious, beautiful teammate. Who knew by that title? Lis Kudrow is Marci in the next title. She tries to clean up the image of a hip-hop artist played by Damon Wayans; that last title has a 12th-century French knight (Jean Reno magically transported to 21st century Chicago. Don’t ask. HBO Zone: Ever hear of FUNNY PEOPLE, FIRST KILL or FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX? Find them here.

HBONow/Go: I know you have been dying for it and it launches, in its entirety, to the sites on 09.14 – get ready to binge ARLI$$. The show, which ran on HBO from 1996 to 2002, follows the whirling-dervish life of a superagent who flirts with disaster as he seeks to squeeze maximum profit from the glory of sports. Eternally optimistic and endlessly resourceful, Arliss Michaels is a high-powered Los Angeles sports agent whose Achilles’ heel is his inability to say “no” to clients and employees. Beset by demanding corporate sponsors, unsentimental team owners and media sharks, this wheeler-dealer has a knack for finding solutions to seemingly hopeless problems — however unscrupulous the means. Stop right there – it is not the same as MissSherlock-221x300BALLERS. Also, another series coming to the streaming sites is another HBO International entry. It is MISS SHERLOCK from HBO ASIA which debuts on 09.01. The show follows the British-born Miss Sherlock Holmes to Japan, where she meets Dr. Wato Tachibana, a surgeon who has just returned from a medical mission in Syria. The two women spark a friendship and become partners in solving peculiar, perplexing crimes. MISS SHERLOCK retains the essential qualities of the classic Holmes, as the investigators employ insightful observation and reasoning skills in their new incarnation as strong women. Movies coming onto the sites include HOUSE OF THE DEAD and its sequel, RONIN and the classic musical THE KING & I.

Cinemax: The suspense-horror series OUTCAST continues its ten-episode second season FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 07 (10:00-11:00pm), exclusively on CINEMAX, followed by other episodes subsequent Fridays at the same time, leading up to the season finale on September 28. Continuing to probe the mystery of what lies behind the town of Rome’s supernatural manifestations, the show explores how people cope with extreme circumstances while protecting the ones they love. Patrick Fugit and Philip Glenister star in the show, which is created and executive produced by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and based on the Skybound/Image comic title by creator Robert Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta.

Featured movies for the month are as follows: When Emily’s (Amy Schumer) boyfriend dumps her right before their trip to South America, she convinces her sensible mother Linda (Goldie Hawn) to come along in SNATCHED. Based on the book “Horse Soldiers,” by Doug Stanton, 12 STRONG depicts the struggles of the first Special Forces unit in Afghanistan after 9/11, who are forced to work with an Afghan assailant in order to complete their mission. Based on the life of late rapper and activist  Tupac  Shakur, ALL EYEZ ON ME debuts on the channel A parapsychologist handles the most chilling case yet when she returns to her New Mexico hometown to discover the terror of her childhood home in INSIDIOUS: THE LAST  KEY. Cinemax movie premieres hit Fridays nights making these movies debuting 09.07, 09.14, 09.21 & 09.28 respectively.

Next Month’s Tease: A project coming in October originally starred Vicki Pepperdine. What did she star in and how does it relate to HBO content? I know you’ll just Google it.

Last month we asked if anyone had a story penned by Munro Leaf. If you did then you are familiar with the plot of one of our theatrical movies this month. The animated FERDINAND was first written as a children’s book, “The Story of Ferdinand” in 1936 by him. A gal named Molly got it right.
