Both Maher & Oliver wrap up their respective seasons in November, but not until after Election Day, naturally. You can be sure they both will have something to say regarding the results of that day. As of late Mr. M. has been chatting up with Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and Congressman for California’s 28th district, Adam Schiff, CNN host Fareed Zakaria, recent author of “Ten Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World”, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor, comedian and director of “Critical Thinking,” John Leguizamo and Anthony ScaramuuciREAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER continues FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 06 (10:00-11:00pm) and concludes on 11.20 with his 550th installment. LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER has three installments in November beginning SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 01 (11:00-11:30pm). That makes his season-ender airing 11.15. As of late he has talked about the pending Presidential Election, the World Health Organization and discussed how the Trump administration has handled asylum seekers over the past four years, why it matters and what we can do about it. And now this…

Movies: There are four Saturdays in November with a movie each night but two of them have an altered time start from the usual 8 o’clock primetime hour. We will point them out as we take a look at family fare and a bit of action in The Dead Don’t Die, DolittleUnderwater and The Call of The Wild for the month.

An HBO Special fills the night of 11.07 (more on that in a bit) but a movie premiere is still on the schedule. THE DEAD DON’T DIE is a comedy-horror flick taking the spot, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 07 (6:10-7:55pm). It’s the living dead as only Jim Jarmusch could create. Here’s all you need to know: the Movies_Dolittledirector of such indie favorites as Broken Flowers and Stranger Than Paradise takes a zombie invasion to a small town, whose sheriff happens to be Bill Murray. Big laughs and splatter ensue. The incredible supporting cast includes Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Caleb Landry Jones, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, Sara Driver, RZA, Selena Gomez, Carol Kane and Tom Waits. Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. On SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 (8:00-9:40pm) is family fare with Robert Downey Jr. The brood can settle in front of DOLITTLE. Downey stars as the eccentric veterinarian who can talk to animals in this delightful film for the whole family. After Queen Victoria falls ill, the doctor sets off on a quest to find a cure, accompanied by a young apprentice and a menagerie of exotic animals. Note its time change, as it debuts SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 (9:30-10:35pm)Seven miles below the surface of the ocean… something has awakened. Stranded on the ocean’s floor after an earthquake, the crew of a drilling station attempt to escape only to encounter a monstrous presence with a bad attitude. Directed by William Eubank; screenplay by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad, story by Brian Duffield. Man, with the like of Pacific Rim, the Godzilla franchise and now this, kaiju are really out of control, aren’t they? As we stay cautious, huddle the family one more time on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28 (8:00-9:40pm) for THE CALL OF THE WILD. Stolen from his owner and shipped off to the Yukon wilderness during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 19th century, a friendly dog named Buck begins a harrowing adventure that brings him back to his wild side. Harrison Ford stars as the grizzly outdoorsman who develops an unbreakable bond with Buck. Co-starring Omar Sy, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan and Bradley Whitford. HBO Documentary Films: HBO is packing a few documentaries onto the end of the year. Here is what is appearing over the next month. Surely, you can find a topic to intrigue you. We lead off with another multi-part series, this one entitled MURDER ON MIDDLE BEACH, which debuts SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15 (10:00-11:00pm) and plays for four installments at that time. The series, directed by first-time filmmaker Madison Hamburg, presents Hamburg’s complicated journey as a young man determined to solve an unspeakable crime and absolve the people he loves, while looking for answers within his fractured family and community. That is their description, not mine, and it is horribly vague. Perhaps the trailer can help shed more light on the crime & the investigation.

Okay, well if that isn’t crazy enough, how about the lady who gets inside the minds of serial killers for a living? Psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis has dedicated her career to the study of murderers, seeking answers to the question of why we kill. CRAZY, NOT INSANE, directed and produced by Academy Docs_CrazyNotInsanePoster-220x300Award-winner Alex Gibney debuts WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (9:00-11:00pm). This provocative documentary explores, like a scientific detective story, Dr. Lewis’s lifelong attempts to look beyond the grisly details of homicides into the hearts and minds of the killers themselves. And on WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25 (9:00-10:30pm) you can catch a work about a long-standing mystery in THE MYSTERY OF DB COOPER. Directed by John Dower, this documentary brings to life the stories of four people believed by their family and friends to be “DB Cooper” a man who on November 24, 1971 hijacked a 727 flying out of Seattle and jumped from the plane over the wilds of Washington State with a parachute and $200,000, never to be heard from again.

The comedic docu-series called HOW TO WITH JOHN WILSON continues on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 05 (11:00-11:30pm ET) with “How To Improve Your Memory” followed on 11.13 with “How To Cover Your Furniture” followed by “How to Split The Check” on 11.20 and concluding its run with a sixth installment on 11.27 called “How To Make The Perfect AxiosS2Pic2-150x150Risotto.” AXIOS still offers its style of reporting every other Monday night. In November that means a report will be filed MONDAY, NOVEMBER 09 (11:00-11:30pm) and a new one on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23 (11:00-11:30pm). As of late they have reported on A look at Axios’ Trump Loyalist Index, an analysis revealing how loyal Republicans in Congress are to President Trump; a talk with The CEO of BP, Bernard Looney, in his first U.S. broadcast interview since the multinational energy company’s unprecedented decision to wean itself off oil and separate interviews with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) & Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).

HBO Sports: The sports division has lined up a new 4-part docu-series. From executive producers Michael Strahan and Constance Schwartz-Morini comes the THE COST OF WINNING, the story of the St. Frances Academy Panthers football program. In 2018, a nearly 200-year-old Catholic school, located in the heart of a neighborhood rife with gun violence and grinding socioeconomic challenges, became a source of both immense pride and then searing controversy as the school’s football team, the Panthers, were expelled from their private school league for being “too good” – a turn of events that raised questions of racial bias. Finding themselves without a league in which to play, the team made its own schedule, barnstorming the country in search of top competition and the chance to showcase its players as they strove for athletic scholarships. It debuts TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 beginning at 9:00pm ET/PT, with episodes three and four airing the following evening at the same time.

It is rare to have an episode breakdown for a docu-series, but there is one for this one.

 –Episode 1
Debut Date: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 (9:00-9:30pm)

Only one week out from their season-opener in Miami, the Panthers prepare for their grueling upcoming national schedule after being forced out of their local Maryland private-school league for being ‘too good.’ Despite lacking adequate facilities, and conditioning on the Baltimore streets, this small school sets out to do the unthinkable.

–Episode 2
Debut Date: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 (9:30-10:00pm) Sports_TheCostOfWinning_Poster

With Week 2’s home-opener against Chicago Simeon fast approaching, the No. 2-seeded Panthers have one more opportunity to prepare for their upcoming trip to Los Angeles to take on No. 1-seeded Mater Dei in hopes of keeping their national championship dreams alive. As the team prepares for the most important match-up of the season – and possibly their high school careers, the realities of life in Baltimore are constant reminders of what they’re really playing for.

–Episode 3
Debut Date: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 (9:00-9:30pm)

As the Panthers work to rebuild their bruised team morale from experiencing loss on and off the field, homecoming provides the players with some much-needed support before they take on IMG Academy – another nationally ranked powerhouse  – for a chance to redeem their season in one of the biggest football games Baltimore has ever seen.

–Episode 4
Debut Date: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11 (9:30-10:00pm)

As the final game of the regular season looms, the Panthers’ seniors are struck by the realization that their time at St. Frances is rapidly ending, and major life changes lie ahead. Before National Signing Day, Panthers’ coaches aid in solidifying college plans and help place those still uncommitted, while surprises – some good, some less than – arise for the players.

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL debuts a new installment TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24 (10:00-11:00pm ET/PT).

Other Movies and Shows: How about some good movies scattered across the schedule like TWELVE MONKEYS, RED TAILS, DOWNTON ABBEY, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES and GLASS. I almost forgot to include CRAFTING LOVECRAFT COUNTRY, a 28-minute look at the making of the hit HBO series. Here is a trailer from just one of the listed movies.

Other HBO Channels: The main channel’s works are the big juicy turkey, but the kind of programming you find on the other channels can be the complementary trimmings that help make a great meal. HBO Latino: PECADO ORIGINAL (Original Sin) is a movie about a sexually frustrated LindaAndTheMockingbirds-225x300housewife who seduces an artist who visits her house, only to be interrupted by her prudish husband, who then tries to win her back. It debuts 11.06. DE LO MIO debuts on 11.13. In this one, three estranged siblings, after nearly a decade apart, reunite after their father’s death in order to settle his estate in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Also that night is another entry in the popular Latino comedy show. It is ENTRE NOS: LA MEETS NY.  LINDA AND THE MOCKINGBIRDS airs beginning 11.16. In it legendary singer Linda Ronstadt travels to Mexico to explore her family history and her musical roots. Joining her on the road trip is musician Jackson Browne and a group of kids from a music academy. Directed by James Keach. On 11.20 PORNO PARA PRINCIPIANTES (Porno For Newbies) debuts. An amateur filmmaker who’s about Movies_PornoParaPrincipiates-283x300to get married falls for a porn star when he’s hired by a mobster to direct a pornographic version of the classic horror film ”The Bride of Frankenstein.” I did not just make that up! CHATEAU VATO A skilled but down-on-his-luck gardener survives hand-to-hand combat with rival landscaping crews before he stumbles upon a glorious estate that hasn’t been landscaped in months. The movie, debuting 11.27 stars Paul Rodriguez.  HBO Signature: Are you game for THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY with Matt Damon or perhaps Tom Cruise in MAGNOLIA? Damon, for me. Brad Pitt gives us THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON and AD ASTRA or, dare we mention, Kevin Spacey is in AMERICAN BEAUTY. If you have 2 hours and 42 minutes to kill you can watch THE ENGLISH PATIENT. And, I know, I can stop this at any time. HBO Comedy: Hey, on 11.29 you can still get your fill of pie. No, not pumpkin pie but AMERICAN PIE, as that 1999 movie and its sequels AMERICAN PIE 2 & AMERICAN REUNION run back-to-back. You liking Hugh Grant in THE UNDOING, then perhaps 1999’s NOTTING HILL is for you? CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER: TAKING YOU HIGHER and MICHELE WOLF: NICE LADY are some stand-up choices. HBO Family: WINGS: SKY FORCE HEROES offers adventure complete with talking airplanes, kids go to superhero school in SKY HIGH and and zipping through the sky is that canine superhero UNDERDOG. HBO Zone: CITY ISLAND is a comedic tale right out of the Bronx, Clive Owen gets medieval as a fierce warrior who fights against a corrupt ruler in LAST KNIGHTS and Christopher Walken is sensational in the1995 shocker THE PROPHESY about a war on Earth between two factions of angels. Walken stars as the evil Gabriel, the leader of a pack of celestial renegades whose hatred of God’s love for humans leads them to revolt. And if that’s not enough, on 11.08 you can watch it here and all four of its sequels back-to-back. We’ll single out the Hugh Grant flick –

The concluding episodes of the eight-part PATRIA (pictured), from Spain, upload on 11.11.

HBO Max: The streamer is just obsessed with rivaling Netflix and seems to greenlight just about anything to beef up its content. The assumption seems to be if you slap an H, B & O in front of it, it is a certified hit. Well only viewers can make that HBOMax_TheFlightAttendantPosterhappen so here are some titles (some without confirmed launch dates) to keep you on top of what is being presented. One of the series HBO Max has been touting from the beginning finally hots the siter in November. It is a bold, bracing, original dramedy about the moment in life when the mask slips, asking if any of us can survive being well and truly ‘known’. Suzie Pickles (Piper), has her life upended when she is hacked and pictures of her emerge in an extremely compromising position. The eight-part series shows her unraveling as the event ricochets around every area of her life.
