MyBrilliantFriend_November-300x171Original Series: As always we lead off with the original series because we always starve for new content or crave our returning favorites. From acclaimed Italian director Saverio Costanzo, MY BRILLIANT FRIEND debuts SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT), with other new episodes airing subsequent Sundays and  Mondays at the same time. Based on the first book in the “Neapolitan Novels” quadrilogy by Italian author Elena Ferrante, the eight-episode season tells the story of Elena Greco, a now-elderly woman who discovers that the most important friend in her life, Raffaella “Lila” Cerullo, seems to have disappeared without a trace. An author immersed in a house full of books, Elena starts writing the story of her and Lila’s tempestuous friendship, starting from the point when they met during their first year of primary school in 1950. The beginning of an epic tale that spans over 60 years, MY BRILLIANT FRIEND finds Elena trying to describe the mystery of Lila, her “brilliant friend”  who is, in a way, her worst enemy.

–Episode #1: “The Dolls”
Debut: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT)

The disappearance of her old friend, Lila Cerrullo, causes 60-year-old author Elena Greco (Elisabetta De Palo) to reflect on the early days of their friendship in 1950s Naples, when Elena (Elisa Del Genio) and Lila (Ludovica Nasti) are two very different girls at the top of their class. When the girls discover the underground lair of Don Achille (Antonio Pennarella), a criminal figure who controls the neighborhood, they decide to confront him, facing their fears together and laying the cornerstone of a lasting friendship and rivalry. Written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo; directed by Saverio Costanzo.

–Episode #2: “The Money”
Debut: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19 (9:00-10:00pm.)

As fourth grade draws to an end, Elena (Elisa Del Genio) and Lila (Ludovica Nasti) fight with their families for the chance to continue their education. Later, a trip out of town becomes a day Elena will never forget, and a death changes things in the neighborhood forever. Written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo; directed by Saverio Costanzo.

–Episode #3: “The Metamorphosis”MyBrilliantFriend_older-300x203
Debut: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25 (9:00-10:00pm)

Now a teenager, Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) grapples with the onset of puberty, her studies and her friendship with Lila (Gaia Girace), who now works in her family’s shoe-repair store. After a library awards ceremony reveals what Lila has been keeping secret, Elena learns what her friend’s grand plans might be. As the girls’ encounters with the opposite sex become more frequent, Lila takes a stand against the dangerous Solara brothers (Elvis Esposito, Alessio Gallo). Written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo; directed by Saverio Costanzo.

–Episode #4: “Dissolving Margins”
Debut: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26 (9:00-10:00pm)

Entering high school, Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) vows to stay ahead of Lila (Gaia Girace), academically and romantically. Lila eschews a parade of suitors vying for her affection, choosing instead to focus on her ambitions in the shoe shop. Promising a better future for the neighborhood, Stefano Carracci (Giovanni Amura) invites Elena, Lila and their families over for New Year’s Eve. Things escalate quickly during a fireworks faceoff with the Solaras (Elvis Esposito, Alessio Gallo), leading Lila to see a new side of her brother Rino (Gennaro De Stefano). Written by Elena Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo; directed by Saverio Costanzo.

Docs_ThePriceofEverythingHBO Documentary Films: HBO always serves up flavorful side dishes to complement the main course. Get a healthy portion with these. WE ARE NOT DONE YET debuting THURSDAY NOVEMBER 08 (8:00-8:45pm) follows U.S. veterans and active-duty service members from varied backgrounds who come together at the USO Warrior and Family Center in Bethesda, Md. for a workshop led by poet Seema Reza and Community Building Art Works. Striving to combat their traumatic military pasts via the written word, they share fears, vulnerabilities and victories, using their writing as a tool for bonding, empowerment and healing, and engaging in a live performance of a collaborative poem at Washington, D.C.’s Lansburgh Theater under the direction of actor Jeffrey Wright. Directed by Sareen Hairabedian. THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING, debuting MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12 (8:00-9:45pm) examines the thrill and anxiety associated with pricing and purchasing contemporary art, exploring the vagaries of an exploding market that’s often driven by subjective opinions of what is “hot” and valuable. Directed by Nathaniel Kahn, the film takes a deep dive into the world of high-end collectors, dealers, curators, auctioneers and artists, weaving together a cultural and commercial tapestry that’s both intoxicating and capricious. The documentary features candid insights from prominent artists like Gerhard Richter, Docs_TheTruthAboutKillerRobots-198x300Jeff Koons, George Condo, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Marilyn Minter and Larry Poons, as well as art-world insiders Stefan Edlis, Jerry Saltz, Amy Cappellazzo, Ed Dolman, Margaret Lee and others. When a robot kills a human, who takes the blame? THE TRUTH ABOUT KILLER ROBOTS, debuting MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26 (10:00-11:25pm) explores this question, as well as many other practical and ethical matters that arise as humans become more dependent on robots than ever before. This eerie, eye-opening work of science nonfiction from director Maxim Pozdorovkin charts incidents in which robots caused the deaths of humans – in an automated Volkswagen factory, in a self-driving Tesla vehicle, and by a bomb-carrying droid used by Dallas police – considering the issues that these cases, typically treated as freak anomalies, raise in terms of accountability and morality. The film goes beyond the sensational deaths to examine more subtle and pervasive ways that robots pose a threat to society, asking what a future living amongst these non-human entities could mean for humankind.
