The landscape is going to change someday soon and I’m not talking about May flowers but the look of HBO Max. Exactly how is unknown at this time but a uber-site is in the offing. Right now, it is still easy and simple to find the HBO Hub and locate your favored content whether it is a half-hour of laughs or an intense hour of drama. Whether it is new fare or a relived classic. It is still HBO! Here is what it offers for May 2022.

A few quick points:

  • Niffenegger’s time travel romance begins
  • The decoding of Anne Lister continues
  • There is plenty to sing along with in musical content
  • And plenty to discuss with Maher, Oliver and Jay
  • and there is some classic George Carlin!

HBO Original Series: We lead off the month with the much-anticipated series entitled THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE. Official press releases set it up quite simply. The HBO original six-episode drama series debuts SUNDAY, MAY 15 (9:00-10:00pm) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. It is an intricate and magical love story, adapted by Steven Moffat (Dr. Who) from the much-loved novel by Audrey Niffenegger and is directed by David Nutter (GAME OF THRONES). The work tells the story of Clare and Henry, and a marriage with a problem… time travel. Ah, it can wreak havoc on a relationship every time, can’t it?

The lead couple, as adults, are Rose Leslie (GAME OF THRONES) as Clare Abshire and Theo James (The Divergent film franchise) as Henry DeTamble. Their younger selves are played by Caitlin Shorey & Everleigh McDonell and Brian Altemus & Jason David, respectively. Since she was 6 years old, Clare has had an imaginary friend: a kind and funny man, sometimes old, sometimes young, who appears in the woods behind her house and tells her tales of the future. Visits from the mysterious Henry are the bright spots in the tedium of her childhood. As the years pass and she grows into a beautiful young woman, she starts to realize her friend is not imaginary — he’s a time traveler, visiting from the future. And he’s not just from any old future, he’s from hers.

Also cast are Desmin Borges as Gomez, one of Clare’s best friends secretly in love with her and Natasha Lopez as Charisse, a nosy confidante of Clare’s. The extended family of the Abshires are also present. Only time will tell if this adaptation holds to the novel.

Continuing in May is WE OWN THIS CITY as we happily return to the tough, corrupt burg of Baltimore. Find it picking up MONDAY, MAY 02 (9:00-10:00pm). In the 2000s, the Baltimore Police Department struggled to respond to crime with meaningful police work, giving itself over to mass arrest and drug warring instead. This series shows how the department’s desperate reliance on statistics over substance eventually which led to the inability of department officials to supervise the Gun Trace Task Force and to discipline rogue police. At the time Baltimore police commanders held to the belief that any street unit that could bring in guns and drugs consistently had to be championed and protected. WE OWN THIS CITY depicts the inevitable corruption of a unit given this carte blanche. WeOwnThisCity_Poster

Yeah, like that tells us anything.

Now if dark comedy isn’t enough, it is not too late to jump onto some horror-comedy in the half-hour following BARRY. It is THE BABY and man, is he wicked. It is presented as a darkly funny, raw examination of motherhood, from the perspective of a woman who doesn’t want to be one. The story resumes SUNDAY, MAY 01 (10:30-11:30pm).

Movies Exclusive to HBO Max: No new movies are slated. I guess they want to make sure THE BATMAN is getting your attention. Is it?

HBO Documentary Films: Yet another title without a locked-in date, I don’t get how hard it is to do that because I don’t want to miss this title – GEORGE CARLIN’S AMERICAN DREAM coming sometime in May. It is a two-part documentary directed by Judd Apatow (HBO’s THE ZEN DIARIES OF Docs_GeorgeCarlin-300x132GARRY SHANDLING) and Michael Bonfiglio (HBO’s MAY IT LAST: A PORTRAIT OF THE AVETT BROTHERS). It chronicles the life and work of legendary comedian George Carlin. Dubbed the “dean of counterculture comedians,” Carlin’s career spanned half a century during which he headlined 14 HBO comedy specials and appeared on The Tonight Show over 130 times, constantly evolving with the times and staying sharply resonant up until his death in 2008 and beyond.  Carlin’s ability to zoom in on societal ills has proven eerily prophetic and much of his work resonates today with alarming (and still hilarious) clarity. The documentary examines a cultural chameleon who is remembered as one of the most influential stand-up comics of all time. We’ll look for it. The documentary with the locked-in date is SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU’VE KNOWN. 15 years after the smash, Tony-winning Broadway run of “Spring Awakening,” the original cast and creative team reunite for a spectacular, one-night-only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund. Chronicling their whirlwind journey back to the stage, the film follows the players as they reconnect and rediscover the beauty and timelessness of the hit musical, sharing the show’s underdog origins, its path to Tony glory, the universal themes of teenage repression and angst, and the unconventional love story of breakout stars Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. The documentary pulls back the curtain to showcase the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsals, in their homes and backstage. It debuts TUESDAY, MAY 03 (9:00-10:23pm ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO MAX Original Documentary Films: YELLOWFACE: ASIAN WHITEWASHING AND RACISM IN HOLLYWOOD is the newest documentary slated for HBO Max. It is a 54-minute documentary about the history of anti-Asian racism and yellowface in Hollywood after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. Never thought about it, did you? Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne, Yul Brynner, Rita Moreno, Mickey Rooney, Ricardo Montalban, Marlon Brando and Tony Randall all played Asian characters in film. Find the film uploading SUNDAY, MAY 01.

HBO Max Kids & Family: In a new series the Sesame Street gang change it up. It is SESAME STREET MECHA BUILDERS. It reimagines Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Abby Cadabby as robot heroes in training who use their STEM superpowers to solve wacky larger-than-life problems. Animated in a dynamic 3D style, this series will help older preschoolers practice foundational critical thinking skills while laughing along with their Sesame Street friends. The first five episodes will air on Cartoonito on Cartoon Network on Monday, May 9, hitting HBO Max TUESDAY, MAY 10.

Kids_MechaBuilders-300x169

On SESAME STREET in May an on-location farm segment wraps up before the gang heads back to the neighborhood. New episodes upload every THURSDAY. In other shows, the WE BABY BEARS return for the third set of episodes for Season One. Those arrive SATURDAY, MAY 07 and the D.C. animated movie CATWOMAN: HUNTED uploads TUESDAY, MAY 10.

HBO Sports: REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL is the only sports pundit holding court this month. The latest edition debuts TUESDAY, May 24 (10:00-11:00pm).

Other Movies & Shows: Let’s pump you full of movies uploading in May. 47 Ronin, Assassins, At Close Range, An Autumn Afternoon, The Big Sleep, Back To School, Bottle Rocket, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Color Purple, Early Spring, 1956, Early Summer, The End of Summer, Furry Vengeance, The Machine That Kills Bad People, The New Guy, North Dallas Forty, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Welcome to the Dollhouse, W.E., What To Expect When You’re Expecting, You, Me and Dupree, Young Adult and Zathura: A Space Adventure are just some of them. Here is a peek at that last one –

Next Month’s Tease: Les Vampires.

Last month’s answer – You might have missed her. Appearing in DEATH ON THE NILE as the maid of Gal Gadot’s character was Rose Leslie. Though you might better remember her as GAME OF THRONES’ Ygritte, find her next as THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE.

Final Clip: Merely because it was bumped out from above.

I’m sure there are titles I’ve missed and I’m equally as sure they will add content last minute.

Enjoy HBO and HBO Watch!
