HBO Sports: It is all things NBA Celtics in the sports category. The HBO Sports Original nine-part documentary series CELTICS CITY, directed by Emmy-winner Lauren Stowell (Taquarius Wair: Unstoppable), executive produced by Bill Simmons (HBO’s MUSIC BOX documentaries & ANDRE THE GIANT) and Connor Schell (OJ: Made in America), and co-executive produced and showrun by Gabe Honig (The Captain), debuts MONDAY, MARCH 3 at 9:00 PM ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on Max, with new episodes debuting weekly through April 28.
It chronicles the remarkable saga of the Boston Celtics, the NBA’s winningest and most storied franchise, from its founding as one of the league’s original teams all the way to its triumphant 2024 championship – along the way delving into the fierce rivalries, defining moments, and societal forces that have shaped the organization’s enduring legacy.
– Chapter I: Founding Fathers
Debut Date: MONDAY, MARCH 3 (9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT)
As the Boston Celtics celebrate their record 18th NBA title, the franchise’s origins are traced back to the arrival of Red Auerbach in 1950, and his uncompromising vision for success. Auerbach made history by drafting Chuck Cooper, the NBA’s first Black player, and built a powerhouse led by Bob Cousy and Bill Russell. When Cousy retired in 1963, the team had six championships, but racial tensions in Boston and beyond augur a tumultuous era ahead.
– Chapter II: No Final Victories
Debut Date: MONDAY, MARCH 10 (9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT)
At the peak of the civil rights movement, with segregation persisting in Boston, Bill Russell inserts himself into the struggle, drawing backlash and death threats. Yet the winning continues, with Russell making more history when he replaces Auerbach to become the team’s player-coach – the first Black head coach in professional sports. It all culminates with an 11th title in 13 years in 1969 in a dramatic seven-game series against Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers.
– Chapter III: All Swept Up
Debut Date: MONDAY, MARCH 17 (9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT)
Against the backdrop of the controversial Boston busing mandate and racial unrest in the city, the Celtics return to glory with a pair of championships in the 1970s thanks to players including John Havlicek, Dave Cowens, Paul Silas, and Jo Jo White. The team fades towards the end of the decade before Auerbach pulls off another brilliant move, drafting an Indiana State star named Larry Bird.
– Chapter IV: Great Hope, Period
Debut Date: MONDAY, MARCH 24 (9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT)
Larry Bird arrives in Boston as a beacon of hope for a city still grappling with racial tensions and its identity in flux. His blend of talent and tenacity embodies Boston’s working-class ethos, while his rivalry with Magic Johnson and battles against Julius Erving help revive a struggling NBA and elevate it to new heights. With the additions of Robert Parish and Kevin McHale, Bird helped lead the Celtics to their 14th championship in 1981. However, internal discord threatens to derail another potential dynasty.
– Chapter V: F**k The Celtics
Debut Date: MONDAY, MARCH 31 (9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT)
As the Celtics and Lakers battle for basketball supremacy, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson’s rivalry captivates the sports world. The Celtics and the Lakers trade titles in epic showdowns as the teams’ racial identities fuel complex conversations about Boston’s lingering reputation. In 1986, Bird helped lead the Celtics to one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history, but then an unthinkable tragedy changes everything.
Other Shows On HBO or Max: Plenty of titles import over to Max but, sorry, we ignore most of them. Two we aren’t this time around come from Adult Swim. They both appear beginning MONDAY, MARCH 10. First is a new adult animated series entitled. OH MY GOD…YES! A SERIES OF EXTREMELY RELATABLE CIRCUMSTANCE. Created by Emmy-nominated writer and executive producer Adele “Supreme” Williams (My Dad the Bounty Hunter), the quarter-hour comedy is executive produced by Dominique Braud (The Simpsons) and follows three women, Sunny, Tulip, and Ladi, who live in the not-so-distant future of South Central LA.
Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen stated, “Usually when someone uses a futuristic setting to comment on the present, it’s a brooding downer. But Adele has made a future that is both plausible, relatable, and most importantly, unique and hilarious. The creator mentions, “The series is ripe with unconventional characters and the geography of the world honors that of the South Central I grew up in but with a sci-fi twist. The scenarios our characters wind up in are pretty absurd but within the absurdity is a smart, bold exploration of – and commentary on – the human condition.”

Next Month’s Tease: When it comes to big titles, the only thing we know for sure is that the highly anticipated second season of THE LAST OF US is in store. But there is also IYANU. What is it?
Last Month’s Tease: We wanted to know in which series did The Redeemer and the Smut Buster appear. They were monster trucks causing mayhem in THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES last season. Don’t forget, the final season begins this month!
Final Clip: Content of the animated variety gets the honor!
Enjoy HBO & HBOWatch!
