We are coming up onto June already. Times flies when you’re hooked on HBO content. WESTWORLD is still going hot and another dramatic series gets added to the slate. Our comic pundits are going strong and new movies are readily available. All it needs is for you to sit down at your favorite device and watch the HBO content as it rolls by. I’m sure you’ll find something worth watching. Don’t forget (but we are here to remind you) to go off the beaten track to explore something, fun, thrilling, scary or informative on one of the other HBO channels offered. Below are a few suggestions for June 2018.
Original Series: The drama series SUCCESSION, debuting SUNDAY, JUNE 03 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) explores themes of power, politics, money and family, played out within a rich and dysfunctional family whose patriarch, Logan Roy (Brian Cox), is CEO of one of the world’s largest media and entertainment conglomerates. In light of his advancing years, it is widely anticipated that Logan’s retirement is imminent, and each of his four grown children is focusing on a personal agenda that may or may not sync with those of their siblings, or of Logan himself. The show also stars Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Alan Ruck, Hiam Abbass, Nicholas Braun and Matthew Macfadyen. Created by Oscar and WGA nominee Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop); Armstrong, Adam McKay, Frank Rich (HBO’s VEEP), Kevin Messick, Will Ferrell, Jane Tranter (HBO’s THE NIGHT OF) and Mark Mylod (HBO’s ENTOURAGE) executive produce; Armstrong serves as showrunner.
“There’s no question that SUCCESSION, at its root, is a family story,” notes director and executive producer Adam McKay. “There’s also a tragic side to it, where you see how massive wealth and power distort and twist and wound this family.”
Executive producer Frank Rich adds, “I think it is the specificity of the way the SUCCESSION characters are drawn, with wry humor and heart, and the caliber of this ensemble cast, that make the Roys stand out in the crowded field of family drama.”
On his 80th birthday, media magnate Logan Roy (Brian Cox), whose imminent retirement was thought to be a given, shocks his family by announcing he’s staying on indefinitely as CEO of Waystar Royco. The news shatters his son, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the heir apparent, who’s in the midst of negotiating the purchase of a digital-media venture founded by a slick operator named Lawrence (Rob Yang). After an impromptu softball game, tempers flare as Logan’s other children – Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Connor (Alan Ruck) – raise objections over Logan’s intentions, including his desire to change the way his eventual successor will be chosen. Written by Jesse Armstrong; directed by Adam McKay.
–Episode #2: “Sh*t Show at the F**k Factory” Debut date: SUNDAY, JUNE 10 (10:00-11:00pm)
Logan’s (Brian Cox) incapacitation sets off a heated succession debate among his children, as the board rushes to inform the media about leadership contingencies before the stock market opens. Greg (Nicholas Braun) is tasked with retrieving important items from the Roy apartment. Kendall (Jeremy Strong) makes an impassioned final plea to keep Waystar Royco in the family and receives sobering news from longtime general counsel Gerri Kellman (J. Smith-Cameron) that dampens a moment of vindication. Written by Tony Roche; directed by Mark Mylod.
–Episode #3: “Lifeboats” Debut date: SUNDAY, JUNE 17 (10:00-11:00pm)
With Waystar’s stock plunging to dangerous lows, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is confronted with a major crisis involving a secret bank debt. Upset with Marcia (Hiam Abbass) for pulling rank in the Roy apartment, Shiv (Sarah Snook) decides to enlist an old paramour to conduct a background check on Logan’s (Brian Cox) third wife. Kendall and Roman (Kieran Culkin) attend their first big meeting in their new roles, as do Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Greg (Nicholas Braun). Kendall tries to convince Rava (Natalie Gold) to give their marriage a second chance and gets an unexpected reaction to his handling of Waystar from his father. Written by Jonathan Glatzer; directed by Mark Mylod.
–Episode #4: “Sad Sack Wasp Trap” Debut date: SUNDAY, JUNE 24 (10:30-11:30pm)
With the company’s annual foundation gala fundraiser approaching, and his dad out of the picture, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) polishes up his speech while enlisting an on-air personality from the Waystar’s ATV Networks to accompany him. Shiv (Sarah Snook) tries to minimize damage from a sordid photo that threatens a client’s political future. Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) inherits a “virus” from his predecessor in the parks and cruises division and shares a disturbing file with Greg (Nicholas Braun). Logan (Brian Cox) makes a mark on his return to the office. At the benefit, Connor (Alan Ruck) shows why he’s better off avoiding stressful situations. Written by Anna Jordan; directed by Adam Arkin.

HBO also drops an HBO FIRST LOOK, this time of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. A few ROOM 104 repeats surface as do a few documentaries like WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY KILL YOU and THE CASE AGAINST 8 also air.
HBO’s Other Platforms: Below is just proof that you can always find something of interest somewhere across HBO’s platforms. HBOLatino: Let’s start with what is wrapping up in June. EL NEGOCIO sees its fourth season conclude on 06.03 and DESTINO RUSIA 2018 ends 06.13. If you don’t know what those two shows are you haven’t been reading. Coming new to the channel are BEBE and EL FUTBOL O YO on 06.01. the first one is a short film about a youngster crossing the border with nothing but a lunchbox full of cash and the latter one is a seriocomic look at a soccer fan who is so obsessed with the sport that he loses his job and ignores his wife until she gives him an ultimatum. EL HOMBRE QUE CUIDA (The Watchman) is a tale of class struggles as the watchman of a beach villa clashes with the rich owner’s son and in MI MUNDIAL (Home Team) a 13-year old small-town soccer prodigy gets the chance of his life to follow his dreams and get his humble family out of poverty.HBO Family:Spend some quality time with the family and take in such titles as AVATAR, if you can keep them still for 2 hours & 42 minutes. Or how about the classic (by our standards) MR. MOM with Michael Keaton or WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE? To get an animated one in there how about MEGAMIND? HBO Signature:One of my unexpected HBO favorites plays on this channel in June. I’d never thought I’d love ANGELS IN AMERICA because of its subject matter, but I do. I also offer DOLORES CLAIBORNE because IT isn’t the only Stephen King content this month. Also, there is BLOOD WORK, yet another movie directed by & starring Clint Eastwood and 1977’s Best Picture nominee THE TURNING POINT. HBO Comedy: Laugh it up with independent unknowns like ALL THE REAL GIRLS, corny slop like EUROTRIP, modern favorites like THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA or comedy classics like Mel Brooks’ TO BE OR NOT TO BE. You choose. HBO Zone: A risk-management specialist is sent to her company’s remote lab to evaluate a genetically engineered young girl in MORGAN or a luxury cruise ship’s maiden voyage takes a ‘titanic’ turn for the worse when it comes under attack by a hostile sea monster in DEEP RISING. Either movie spells bad news. IN THE LAND OF WOMEN and NEVER DIE ALONE offer more dramatic fare to the channel. HBONow/Go:You could just wander around the streaming site of choice until you fall upon the next great HBO entertainment to enjoy or you can cut to the chase and select one of the packaged collections that group content in one spot. For example, if you want to catch a movie before it exits the scene find the Last Chance Collection. This month offers the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise, the HARRY POTTER franchise and KONG: SKULL ISLAND. But if you go to the Just Added Collection movies added 06.01 will include THE FULL MONTY, JERSEY BOYS, FLETCH and SYLVIA. Or how about WESTWORLD: SEASON 2 EXTRAS, a collection that has, to date, eleven (11) behind-the-scenes clip all in one location. Me, I just like to snoop around and discover such works as THR BRINK, THE PACT, EL JARDIN DE BRONCE and THE FINAL YEAR. If any of those titles are mysteries to you than you don’t snoop the streaming sits nearly enough.
Cinemax: This channel kicks off a new series from J. K. Rowling. C.B. STRIKE, debuting FRIDAY, JUNE 01 (10:00-11:00pm), followed by other episodes subsequent Fridays at the same time, is a riveting miniseries based on the best-selling crime novels by Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. The story centers on Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke), who lost part of his right leg while serving in the army in Afghanistan, and returned from the war to start a one-man private-detective firm. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s instincts and his background as a military-police investigator prove crucial in solving cases that have baffled the police. Joining Strike in the search for clues is Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger), who starts working as Strike’s temporary assistant and is soon as immersed in his investigations as she is to details of his illustrious yet troubled past. The series launches with three one-hour episodes based on the first book in the trilogy, “The Cuckoo’s Calling” (directed by Michael Keillor), followed by adaptations of the remaining two books, “The Silkworm” (directed by Kieron Hawkes) and “Career of Evil” (directed by Charles Sturridge), both of which consist of two one-hour episodes.
Episodes include: Episode #1: “The Cuckoo’s Calling (part 1)” Debut date: FRIDAY, JUNE 01 (10:00-11:00pm)
London, the dead of winter: Supermodel Lula Landry (Elarica Johnson) plummets to her death from the balcony of her Mayfair apartment. After an inquest concludes that she committed suicide due to the pressures of fame, her brother, John Bristow (Leo Bill), seeks Strike’s (Tom Burke) help in finding justice for his adopted sister. Despite Strike’s attempts to get DI Eric Wardle (Killian Scott) to reopen the case as a possible homicide, he is met with a brusque brush-off and left to his own means to prove otherwise. With Robin’s (Holliday Grainger) help, Strike conducts interviews with neighbors, friends and family of the victim, hoping to get to the truth.
Episode #2: “The Cuckoo’s Calling (part 2)” Debut date: FRIDAY, JUNE 8 (10:00-11:00pm)
After the sudden death of Lula’s friend Rochelle (Tezlym Senior-Sakutu), Strike (Tom Burke) decides to interrogate the rest of Lula’s friends. Strike questions Derrick Wilson (Brian Bovell), the concierge at Lula’s building, to determine his whereabouts when the supermodel died and discover how the potential killer escaped unnoticed. The unoccupied second-floor flat and a bouquet of white roses lead Strike to important conclusions.
Episode #3: “The Cuckoo’s Calling (part 3)” Debut date: FRIDAY, JUNE 15 (10:00-11:00pm)
Robin (Holliday Grainger) visits a boutique where Lula shopped on the day she died, gathering key information from the salesperson who secretly recorded the celebrated model’s conversation with Rochelle. Strike’s (Tom Burke) tireless analysis of the CCTV footage and a clandestine search of Lula and Bristow’s family home lead him to two possible suspects and eventually point him in the direction of the actual killer.
“The Cuckoo’s Calling” also stars Martin Shaw, Tara Fitzgerald, Siân Phillips, Kerr Logan, Natasha O’Keeffe, Amber Anderson, Kevin Fuller, Ben Crompton and Sarah Sweeney; directed by Michael Keillor; written by Ben Richards; executive produced by Ruth Kenley-Letts, Neil Blair and J.K. Rowling.
–Episode #4: “The Silkworm (part 1)” Debut date: FRIDAY, JUNE 22 (10:00-11:00pm)
Strike’s (Tom Burke) new client, Leonora Quine (Monica Dolan), wants help tracking down her missing husband, the once-infamous Owen Quine (Jeremy Swift), a former bad boy of the London literary scene, now toiling away in relative obscurity. Strike’s first port of call is Liz Tassel (Lia Williams), Quine’s agent, still smarting from her client’s reckless behavior. She has dropped him from the agency after his bombastic, unpublished manuscript, “Bombyx Mori,” caused a stir in the industry with its slanderous, thinly disguised fabulist portrayals.
–Episode #5: “The Silkworm (part 2)” Debut date: FRIDAY, JUNE 29 (10:00-11:00pm)
When Owen’s disemboweled body is discovered, Strike (Tom Burke) and Robin (Holliday Grainger) delve deeper into the hidden meanings and concealed secrets of “Bombyx Mori,” fighting to prove the innocence of his incarcerated widow (Monica Dolan). Strike invites Liz (Lia Williams) to lunch and gains insight into Andrew Fancourt (Peter Sullivan), Quine’s famous literary rival, and the feud between them. By looking more closely at the manuscript and putting the pieces of the puzzle together, the true author of an alternative version of “Bombyx Mori” – and the identity of the killer – are revealed.
“The Silkworm” also stars Natasha O’Keeffe, Kerr Logan, Tim McInnerny and Sarah Gordy; directed by Kieron Hawkes; written by Tom Edge; executive produced by Ruth Kenley-Letts, J.K. Rowling, Tom Edge and Neil Blair.
