HBO-Logo-SpaceMan, does the time go by fast. Here we are leading into summer already, we are halfway through the current Sunday night originals and we are barreling onward. The question lies, as the evenings get longer and nicer, what is on HBO to hold our attention in June? The answer is – a little bit of everything. We once again offer a look at most of the content that is scheduled for the month ahead. I hope you find a gem whether it is a continuing series, an old movie of even a favorite repeat. Youcan also seek out our Schedule Page. Here is What’s On in June.

GOT_06logo-300x168

Original Series: I know that many of you think that the dramatic one-hour called GAME OF THRONES is the only good thing going (you would be wrong, in our opinion), but nevertheless, we’ll lead off with what we know about what is ahead. The answer is next to nothing. The ten-episode sixth season of GAME OF THRONES continues with a new episode debuting SUNDAY, JUNE 05 at 9:00pm and with the season concluding 06.26.

— Episode #57: “The Broken Man”
Debut: SUNDAY, JUNE 05 at 9:00pm

The High Sparrow eyes another target. Jaime confronts a hero. Arya makes a plan. The North is reminded. Written by Bryan Cogman; directed by Mark Mylod. Now this freezing out of episode information it a bit ridiculous, don’t ya think?

That is all you are going to get. Okay, we will slip in a picture or two to “Ooooh” at.

Movies: Movies these days are so hit or miss. Marvel superheroes are the big pop culture craze it seems and HBO doesn’t have those, so it has to offer up the best it can offer and hope you like them. Maybe, of the titles debuting In June, you put off seeing one of these in the movie house but you’ll catch it on HBO. Maybe, you’ll like THE MARTIAN, EVEREST, TED 2 and/or MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS. Movies_TheMartian-300x184Here is a bit on each.

An astronaut (Matt Damon) is abandoned in space after he is presumed dead following a storm and sets out on his own rescue mission when THE MARTIAN debuts SATURDAY, JUNE 4 (8:00 p.m.). Nominated for seven Oscars, the film also stars Jessica Chastain, Kristin Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film is directed by Ridley Scott screenplay by Drew Goddard. A climbing expedition turns tragic when a massive snowstorm threatens the lives of a group of intrepid adventurers in EVEREST, debuting SATURDAY, JUNE 11 (8:00). Based on a true story, the adventure thriller stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington and Jake Gyllenhaal. TED 2 continues the story of a grown man (Mark Wahlberg) and his childhood teddy bear (Seth MacFarlane), who has come to life, when the sequel to the hit off-kilter buddy comedy debuts SATURDAY, JUNE 18 (8:00 p.m.). Amanda Seyfried also stars. A young man (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow teens battle the plot of an evil, shadow organization when MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS debuts SATURDAY, JUNE 25 (8:00 p.m.). Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Aidan Gillen, Barry Pepper, Lili Taylor and Patricia Clarkson also star this follow-up to the dystopian thriller. Wes Ball directs the film, with screenplay by T.S. Nowlin.

As we just lost more lives on Mount Everest this past month we offer a clip about the world’s tallest peak above sea level.

HBO Documentary Films: The documentary front is a sparse one as of late but June offers two distinctly different ones at least. First, debuting MONDAY, JUNE 20 (9:00-10:20 p.m.), is the documentary SUITED which tells the story of Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn tailoring company that makes custom suits for gender-nonconforming and transgender clients, following a range of pDocs_SuitedPoster-200x300eople on the gender spectrum. Among those sharing their unique stories are a 12-year-old trans boy nervous about looking good for his upcoming Bar Mitzvah, a New York City cab driver, a young southern law student and a transgender man preparing for his wedding. The film spotlights the intimate journey of coming into a new identity, accepting difference and living bravely in one’s own skin. Produced by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner; directed by Jason Benjamin.

Oscar-nominated director Josh Fox, of GASLAND & GASLAND 2, investigates the global impact of climate change, arguably the greatest threat the world has ever faced (if you believe in that theory), when HOW TO LET GO OF THE WORLD AND LOVE ALL THE THINGS CLIMATE CAN’T CHANGE debuts MONDAY, JUNE 27 (9:00-11:10 p.m.). In his deeply personal style, with trademark humor and banjo in hand, Fox travels to 12 countries on six continents and discovers that while it may be too late to stop the worst consequences of climate change – including record drought, superstorms and rising sea levels – there are places to find hope. Here is a clip from that last one.

HBO SpecialA young stand-up comic battling cancer, who recently told his story on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, stars in his first HBO special when QUINCY JONES: BURNING THE LIGHT debuts THURSDAY, JUNE 02 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT). To help Jones achieve his dream of starring in a stand-up comedy special that would be his legacy, friend and fellow comedian Nicole Blaine, along with her husband, Mickey Blaine, launched a Kickstarter campaign, which led to his March 15 appearance  DeGeneres’  program and his subsequent HBO deal. Jones found out that HBO would air his special upon visiting Ellen a second time. It is only right that we schedule to watch this one.

Come on and help this guy fulfill his dream!

HBO Kids: It is still going strong with such episodes as “To The Moon, Elmo” and with guests like Nick Jonas. The award-winning show continues its 46th season with a new episSesameStreetAnnoucement-300x209ode debuting SATURDAY, JUNE 04 (9:00-9:30 a.m.), followed by other new episodes debuting subsequent Saturdays at the same time in June. Such upcoming episodes include “Abby Makes The Seasons Change” and “Chicken Thunderstorms.”

Hey, you might not care, but we try to be through.

HBO Sports: HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: FRANCISCO VARGAS VS. ORLANDO SALIDO AND JULIAN RAMIREZ VS. ABRAHAM LOPEZ is seen SATURDAY, JUNE 04 (10:30 p.m. live ET/tape-delayed PT) from StubHub Center in Carson, Cal., exclusively on HBO. The 12-round main event is a super featherweight title showdown featuring Francisco Vargas (23-0-1, 17 KOs) and Orlando Salido (43-13-3, 30 KOs). In the evening’s opening bout, two featherweight prospects face off when Julian Ramirez (16-0, 8 KOs) and Abraham Lopez (20-0-1, 15 KOs) meet in a ten-round contest.

Then later it is Boxing After Dark: Verdejo vs. Martinez/Martinez vs. Lomachenko. HBO Boxing lights up Broadway on the eve of New York’s Puerto Rican Day Parade when this bout is played out punch for punch on SATURDAY, JUNE 11 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) from The Theater at Madison Square Garden. It features titleholder and Puerto Rican Rocky Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) in the second defense of his crown versus the heralded Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3 KOs). REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL has its next monthly edition debuting TUESDAY, JUNE 21 (10:00-11:00pm).

Other Movies and Shows: Movies appearing on HBO for the first time (so they say) in June include VAN HELSING, with Hugh Jackman as the fearless vampire hunter; MAPS TO THE STARS, a twisted Hollywood satire with Julianne Moore; 101 DALMATIANS, the live action telling with Glenn Close and MI:5, in which a disgraced British intelligence officer must ferret out a mole in the agency and track down an escaped terrorist. Other ‘first run’ content includes THE BOY NEXT DOOR with Jennifer Lopez and LOST IN SPACE, the story of the Robinson family of the 1960’s sci-fi show. HBO FIRST LOOK examines Warcraft, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie  and Now You See Me 2. Over on HBO2 a marathon of the entire sixty-three episodes of SIX FEET UNDER plays over five seasons from 06.02 – 06.05.

Hey, I liked that show and its title sequence.

HBO’s Other Platforms: As always we explore a few more choices across the channels. HBO Latino: This channel always has new content. Of course, it is drawing that content from throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands. In June the series DIOS, Inc. continues. Plus we will take note of QUADATE (Stay) a short film about undocumented immigrants; EL ELEPHANTE DESAPARECIDO (The Vanishing Elephant) a movie Hollywood Reporter calls a “trippy Peruvian mystery” and FRANCISO, RECEN POR MI (Francis, Pray for Me) with Darío Grandinetti portraying Pope RocketMan-211x300Francis in this look at his life from his youth in Argentina to his becoming Pope in 2013. HBO Family: While SESAME STREET still anchors this channel we still can find other stuff like the following trio of movies. They are THE BROTHERS GRIMM with Heath Ledger and Matt Damon; KULL THE CONQUEROR with Kevin Sorbo (TV’s Hercules) as a barbarian brute and ROCKETMAN in which NASA replaces an injured astronaut on the first manned mission to Mars with a hapless, klutzy computer nerd. This zany slapstick farce hails from 1997. HBO Signature: Out of the titles we throw out here the only familiar one is INDEPENDENCE DAY. You know the one; aliens blowing up international landmarks. The other titles we offer intrigue us more. How about FIERCE PEOPLE and THE SCORE? In the former New York massage therapist and her teenage son flee the city during the summer to move into the mansion of a fabulously wealthy client, but a shocking event teaches them that nothing is more savage than high society. The latter choice gives us Robert De Niro in a twist-filled caper film about an expert safecracker who wants to retire. Also showing up for the first time on this channel is DARK BLUE about the days leading up to the 1992 L. A. riots and BLACK SEA in which a massive haul of gold from a sunken Nazi U-boat is the target of a submarine team led by Jude Law. HBO Comedy: Here are a few movie choices. Perhaps you can find laughs in CLUB PARADISE with Robin Williams, KEEPING THE FAITH with Ben Stiller or THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOW with Tom Hanks. Surely you like the kind of humor dished out by one of them?  HBO Zone: From the Zone we will throw out HIGH FIDELITY with John Cusack as a record store owner; director David Cronenberg serving up NAKED LUNCH or BAD GIRLS BEHIND BARS with Katie Morgan. If you don’t like them there is repeats of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, AMERICAN PIE and AMERICAN PIE 2, BAD SANTA and BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. We, know, enough already. As for me, I’m drawn to the following:

TheGreatSantini HBONow/Go:  Summer time and a whole new batch of movies are making their way to the streaming sites. How about BAIT, JET LI’s FEARLESS, THE MAZE RUNNER, NIGHTHAWKS, BRONCO BILLY and THE FABULOUS BAKER BOYS? Robert Duvall is great in THE GREAT SANTINI and Scarlett Johansson in THE BLACK DAHLIA. In Sports there is last season’s HARD KNOCKS with the Huston Texans and Latino as DIOS, INC. coming in June.

The sites are also touting Kids Movies We Haven’t Outgrown which include HOME ALONE, KUNG FU PANDA, CASPER and SHREK. Also collected is a grouping of eleven episodes of GIRLS entitled The Essential Hannah Horvath if you want to deep dive into that character. You can also count on, though it has not surfaced yet, a Father’s Day collection to be assembled. The sites are always fun to explore to supplement your HBO experience. For me I find movies, Latin series and my binge of shows like VEEP and VICE. You?

Cinemax: Of course the big talk over on the sister channel is the premiere of the new original series OUTCAST. It will officially launch its ten-episode season FRIDAY, JUNE 03 at 10:00pm.However there has been enough hot buzz about it that the Piot episode has been made available to watch on YouTube, HBO.com, Cinemax.com and (it is still there at last look) right here on HBOWatch.

Based on the Skybound/Image comic title by creator Robert Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta, OUTCAST follows Kyle Barnes, a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson, a preacher who has personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle discovers could change his fate — and the fate of the world — forever.

Creeped out yet?

Next Month’s Tease: This should be an easy one. The title of this upcoming movie shares its name with a bastardized religious practice and headlines a performer who played Joe Pistone and John Dillinger. Name the movie and the actor.

Last month we needed you to figure out that the aspiring comedian Quincy Jones who caught the eye of Ellen DeGeneres campaigned for an HBO Comedy Special and got his dying wish. Look for our review in June.

Final ClipWhat the hell, let us end a little crass with a bit of Ted 2.

Ha! Sorry about that, but I could have done the Red Band trailer instead.

Later!
