After that two new comedies debut with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jack Black respectively. Created by Stephen Levinson (HBO’s ENTOURAGE) and executive produced by Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Peter Berg, Evan Reilly, Rob Weiss, Julian Farino and Denis Biggs, BALLERS explores the whirlwind lifestyle and real-life problems of a group of former and current football players.

Aasif Mandvi, Maribeth Monroe, Eric Ladin, Esai Morales and Geoff Pierson star also. Here is our first look at the trailer.

When a rogue general seizes control of Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal, the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of three improbable Americans: Secretary of State Walter Larson, lowly Foreign Service officer Alex Talbot and ace Navy fighter pilot Zeke Tilson. From the turbulent streets of the Middle East, to the White House situation room, to an aircraft carrier on the Red Sea, these three compromised souls must pull through the chaos around them to save the planet from World War Three.

In Washington, D.C., Secretary of State Walter Larson (Tim Robbins) is fetched from a hotel tryst by his seen-it-all aide, Kendra Peterson (Maribeth Monroe), to attend an emergency White House meeting on the growing unrest in Pakistan. After learning that paranoid General Umair Zaman (Iqbal Theba) is threatening the region with destruction, President Navarro (Esai Morales) and ultra-hawkish Secretary of Defense Grey (Geoff Pierson) put a plan in motion to remove Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, against Larson’s advice that such an operation is risky and reckless. The group soon discovers that Alex is their only source of hard information on the ground in Pakistan. Meanwhile, onboard an aircraft carrier in the region, ace pilot Zeke “Z-Pak” Tilson (Pablo Schreiber) calls his ex-wife, Ashley (Mary Faber), in Florida, urging her to send more “product” for his lucrative side business selling drugs. Later, Zeke’s mounting troubles are put on hold when he and his co-pilot, Glenn (Eric Ladin), are ordered to take off on a mission he knows could lead to catastrophe. –Episode 02 –  “Half-Cocked.” With President Navarro and Defense Secretary Grey ordering a military response to General Zaman’s threats, Walter argues that an air strike could unleash a world war. He and Kendra must track down a moderate contact inside the Pakistan government to defuse the crisis. Meanwhile, after learning that classified information has been sent from Rafiq’s house, Zaman’s men storm the place, threaten Rafiq’s family, and drag Alex to an undisclosed location for interrogation of the worst kind. In the skies over Pakistan, with Walter and the president looking on via an airborne camera, Zeke tries to sober up a drug-addled Glenn, but his partner accidentally launches a missile that creates high anxiety in three world capitals. Movies_TheJudgePoster-300x225Theatrical Movies: Four Saturdays in June means four debuts of movies you may not have caught at your favorite cinema house. They are THE JUDGE, GET ON UP, GONE GIRL and JOHN WICK. They are not real big blockbusters, but acclaimed dramas that got noticed for their respective reasons. As always we announce a few details here and ask you to note that HBOWatch will be reviewing each of them as they appear throughout the month of June.

To start us off a hotshot lawyer (Robert Downey Jr.) returns to his hometown, where his estranged father (Robert Duvall), the town judge, has been accused of a fatal hit-and-run when THE JUDGE debuts SATURDAY, JUNE 6 (8:00 p.m.). Chadwick Boseman got praise for his role of the “Godfather of Soul.” Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Jill Scott, Craig Robinson and Dan  Aykroyd also star.

Every spring in America, more than 8,000 people die from gunfire. Debuting MONDAY, JUNE 22 at 9:00pm REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD: AMERICAN SPRING 2014 draws entirely on found footage – social media postings on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and elsewhere, plus news accounts and material from police files –to tell the stories of some of those who died that spring. From accidental shootings and suicides, to family disputes and random violence, the accounts are shared in present-tense by the people who lived them through their own words and images. These tragic stories represent just a Docs_LarryKramer-300x211fraction of the 32,000 people who are lost to gunfire in America every year, an average of 88 deaths per day. Those statistics alone are chilling. Debuting MONDAY, JUNE 29 at 9:00pm is LARRY KRAMER IN LOVE & ANGER which is an intimate profile of the legendary author, political firebrand and playwright, who gave voice to the outrage and grief that inspired a generation of gay men and lesbians to fight for their lives. Featuring a top lineup of contributors, the next monthly edition of the show debuts TUESDAY, JUNE 23 at 10:00pm.

Other Movies and Shows: Some titles claiming to be first run entertainment on HBO include NUTTY PROFESSOR II: THE KLUMPS (wasn’t one enough?); GOOD DOG, about a dog that is not what he seems and BODYGUARD: A NEW BEGINNING (never heard of this martial arts thriller). Ok, those are rather lame so how about 12 YEARS A SLAVE, BANKSY DOES NEW YORK or DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB instead. The channel also has HBO FIRST LOOK installments looking at Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2, Trainwrecked and Entourage. Oh, what the hell here is an ENTOURAGE Movie Trailer just because we can.

HBO’s Other Platforms: Time to see what else is out there in June. HBO Latino: You can always find something here assuming your bilingual or follow subtitles. I’ll offer two choices starting with LA VIDA INESPERADA (The Unexpected Life). Movie_LatinoBambiAfter ten years of trying to make in acting in New York City a Spaniard rethinks his life when his cousin visits from home. Also there is the never ending question of QUIEN MATO A BAMBI? (Who Killed Bambi?) How that title fits a tale of a debt-ridden pizzeria owner who kidnaps the wrong man for ransom in this dark comedy is anybody’s guess.  HBO Family: Does anyone watch this channel? This month it has movies like ED, the chimp that plays baseball, LEAVE IT TO BEAVER, which might not mean anything if you don’t know who Theodore Cleaver is, and there is WOLVERINE who you probably do recognize. OVER THE HEDGE is some animated fun and throw in the billionth repeat of HAPPILY EVER AFTER shows and you got the line-up pretty much. HBO Signature: This channel I do watch and in June I can find movies like SHATTERED and OUT OF TIME. That first one has a sadistic kidnapper played by Pierce Brosnan doing the terrorizing and the latter film has small town sheriff Denzel Washington framed for murder. There is also the James Clavell epic TAI-PAN to watch. HBO Comedy: If you love standup HBO has an archive of them that keep rotating on this channel. You can catch routines from PinkPanterMovies-300x236Jerrod Carmichael, Tracey Ullman, and also Bill Engvall, Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy team up in their BLUE COLLAR COMEDY TOUR. There is always some stand-up comedy to find. Sadly, I think I mentioned this bit before. HBOGo/HBONow: Coming in June to the site is the complete first and only season of JOHN FROM CINCINNATI. If you’ve heard all about this show, but never saw it then binge watch it, by all means, when it arrives. As far as new movies on the sites we suggest the classic DELIVERANCE, JUMPIN’ JACK FLASH, PAY IT FORWARD, THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Other programming arriving includes THE PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW ON BROADWAY, episodes of REAL SPORTS and KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK. Cinemax: On the classic front there is the Blake Edwards’ gems THE PINK PANTHER, THE PINK PANTHER STRIKES AGAIN and SON OF THE PINK PANTHER. For more recent flicks the guide I consulted features – I ORIGIN starring Michael Pitt (HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE); A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES with Liam Neeson and –

Next Month’s Tease:  For July – According to mythology Daedalus was the first one of these as he was credited as the creator of the structure.   The word we were looking for last month was ‘wick’ pointing us towards the Keanu Reeves movie JOHN WICK.

Final Clip: Since we hype up on the original programming pretty well this final clip is usually a movie. We’ll run with that and offer a look at GONE GIRL.
