Going along with the summertime heat is the summertime fun and a chance to cool down with some heated content on HBO. Though HBO doesn’t have a big series premiere in July remember that there is plenty of other content to enjoy and that WESTWORLD Season 4 just started. Plus, you know HBO Max has something for everyone. Seek out your own cinematic fireworks, but as always, we offer a guide to help you get started. Here is what’s on for July 2022.

A few quick points:

  • The prolific Nathan Fielder offers a new show to HBO
  • The talented Issa Rae offers a new show to HBO Max
  • and while we’re throwing out names, there is Glaser & Dr. Who too
  • Plus, plenty of serious topics on the documentary front
  • and Pretty Little Liars!

People_NathanFielderHBO Original Series: We begin with the new entry on HBO; the one with Nathan Fielder (pictured at right). You might know him from other works but for HBO he is the executive producer behind HOW TO WITH JOHN WILSON and appeared in 2017’s TOUR DE PHARMACY & the animated ANIMALS. and for Warner, he has voiced for Bob’s Burgers and Rick and Morty. He now contributes something called THE REHEARSAL. It explores the lengths one man will go to reduce the uncertainties of everyday life. With a construction crew, a legion of actors, and seemingly unlimited resources, Fielder allows ordinary people to prepare for life’s biggest moments by “rehearsing” them in carefully crafted simulations of his own design. When a single misstep could shatter your entire world, why leave life to chance? The HBO Original six-episode comedy series debuts FRIDAY, JULY 15 (10:00) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

We are only one episode into Season Four of WESTWORLD and who knows how disturbing and whacked-out it is going to be? Oh, yes, it is a mind-twister; perhaps this Recap clip can help you get up to speed.

It resumes its eight-episode season SUNDAY, JULY 03 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT) with new episodes all month. Also continuing for four more episodes is the limited series IRMA VEP. Pick up the story MONDAY, JULY 04 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT). It concludes then on July 25. It is disappointing when they give you so little to go on. If you are true fans of these titles then you know the drill. Enjoy.

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER will take some time off in July. Find it returning FRIDAY, JULY 29, (10:00-11:00pm ET/PT). LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER also takes a break. That show’s return happens SUNDAY, JULY 24 (11:00-11:30pm ET/PT). PAUSE WITH SAM JAY does have some new content, but it wraps up its commitment of eight installments this month. It continues on FRIDAY, JULY 01 (11:00-11:30pm ET/PT) with #13 – “Sexual Miscalculations” and ends the following week at the same time with # 14 – “Dead Momma Episode”. I’ll just lay down here one of the hot topics right now and leave it at that.

Original Series Exclusive to HBO Max: One of the go-to talents we follow around here is Issa Rae from INSECURE. We’ll her production company, HOORAE, has now landed with RAP SH!T on Max. Very simply put, because this is all they’ll give us, the series is about two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), who reunite to form a rap group. Also cast are Jonica Booth, Devon Terrell and RJ Cyler. The Max Original comedy series debuts THURSDAY, JULY 21 with two episodes. The eight-episode season continues with one episode each week, concluding on September 01. We have a Teaser that features the energy of our leads. Take a peek.

Also, on Max, we meet the next generation of pretty little liars in PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN. Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Did you watch that unfold? Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls find themselves Max_FBoyIsland-S2-300x298tormented by an unknown enemy and are forced to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago…as well as their own. If you watch the original series then you know what it is all about. This sequel series begins uploading on THURSDAY, JULY 28. On the non-fiction front the big catch, if you can call it that, is the return of FBOY ISLAND. Season Two of the Max Original reality dating series, hosted by comedian and actress Nikki Glaser, debuts THURSDAY, JULY 14 with the first three episodes of the ten-episode season, followed by three additional episodes on July 21, two episodes on July 28 and the final two episodes on August 4. follows three new women, Mia Emani Jones, Louise Barnard and Tamaris Sepulveda, who move to a tropical paradise where they’re joined by 26 men – 13 self-proclaimed “Nice Guys” looking for love, and 13 self-proclaimed “FBoys,” there to compete for cold, hard cash. You’re eager for it if you love it, I’m sure.

HBO International Titles: The international fare is what is big this month as content comes from all over the world to the streaming site. First, a few titles that upload on FRIDAY, JULY 01. From Germany, a country we haven’t seen much from comes ALMOST FLY. While the social upheaval in 1990 can be felt across the country, three school friends are confronted with the realities of their West-German province and dream of greater things. As they suddenly discover hip-hop, their Max_AlmostFlyentire life changes. Germans saved by hip-hop, not punk? Times have changed. Season One sports six episodes. From Spain we get a different six-episode series; this one is called HOW TO SCREW IT ALL UP (Como mandario todo a la mierda). A simple tagline states – “A group of friends who take a directionless road trip, but end up finding themselves.” Ah, isn’t that usually the way? Perhaps it is also somewhat of a travelogue through rural Spain? A movie title we can give you is LA CIUDAD DE LAS FIERAS (City of Wild Beasts). We are off to the means streets of Colombia’s Medellin for an hour and 37 minutes as trouble leads a teen to the country and the grandfather he’s never known. A short film follows entitled BLANES ESQUINA MULLER. In the fifteen-minute piece, Jorge is visited by his future self who traveled back in time to prevent his girlfriend from leaving him and proposes a plan to avoid it. The latter two titles here also land on the HBO Latino channel the same day at 8:00pm ET/PT.

Uploading on THURSDAY, JULY 07 is content from China and France. First, we look at an epic 30-episode work from HBO Asia. Does anyone dare to tackle the lengthy MISS S.? The series, which is set in 1930s Shanghai, stars award-winning actress Ma Yili (The First Half of My Life) in the title role of Miss S, also known as Su Wenli, a beautiful and witty socialite who forms an unlikely duo with the righteous and serious inspector Luo Qiuheng played by Gao Weiguang (Ghost Blowing Light). It is called an exciting new adaptation of Australia’s Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, so look for some Shanghai sleuthing situations here. The other title arriving on the above date is out of France. It is VISITORS. The eight-part half-hour series was created, written and directed by Simon Astier (Netflix’ Mortel). He also stars as Richard, a rookie police officer who sees two strange lights colliding in the sky on his first day on the job. That fact, coupled with the show title, should give you an indication of the sci-fi bent this series will take.

One more work to mention here. On THURSDAY, JUNE 14 we see Season 1 and 2 of VOTE FOR JUAN. Set in the world of Spanish politics, Vota Juan revolves around the character of Juan Carrasco (Javier Cámara), an uninspiring Minister of Agriculture who, after finding his political ambitions awoken by a series of chance political events, decides to take part in his party’s primary elections thereby giving himself a chance to eventually run for the position of President of the Government. So, in other words, it is a Spanish VEEP? It is followed by the Season Three Premiere on HBO Max.

HBO Saturday Night Movies: A rundown of the primetime Saturday night movies (all beginning at 8:00pm ET/PT, unless noted) on the HBO Channel are THE HEAT with Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy on JULY 02; THE OTHER WOMAN with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Cameron Diaz on JULY 09; the debut of LAST NIGHT IN SOHO on JULY 16; BOB’s BURGERS: THE MOVIE on JULY 23 and GODZILLA (2014) on JULY 30.

HBO offers LAST NIGHT IN SOHO debuting SATURDAY, JULY 16 (8:00-10:000pm ET/PT). This psychological horror film directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Terence Stamp and Diana Rigg in her last role. In it, Eloise, an aspiring fashion designer, is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer, Sandie. But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker. Yes, it is a bit cryptic but does it capture your fancy?

Movies-TheBobsBurgersMovie

Movies Exclusive to HBO Max: Serve it up! It’s THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE. 20th Century Studios presents the film when it uploads TUESDAY, JULY 12 on HBO Max (two weeks later on HBO). It is an animated, big-screen, musical comedy-mystery-adventure based on the long-running Emmy-winning series. The story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob’s Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belchers’ plans for a successful summer. While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family’s restaurant. As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong. It showcases voice talent which includes Kristen Schaal, H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, Zach Galifianakis and Kevin Kline. It seems like the perfect summer movie, right?

Docs_TheAnarchists_adHBO Documentary Films: The HBO Original six-part documentary series THE ANARCHISTS, directed by Todd Schramke and produced by Blumhouse Television, debuts SUNDAY, JULY 10 (10:00 – 11:00pm ET/PT) with new episodes airing subsequent Sundays at the same time on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. In 2015, Jeff Berwick, a Canadian entrepreneur turned provocateur, launched a conference in Acapulco, Mexico in hopes of promoting anarchy in its purest form – an ideal espousing the absence of government with absolute individual self-rule. The event was deemed Docs_WeMetInVirtualReality_posterAnarchapulco”. With intimate access to the main players, this documentary features candid, first-hand accounts from Jeff Berwick, the reluctant figurehead of the movement; anarchy activists Lisa and Nathan Freeman who left the United States with their children to find a freer life in Mexico; and John Galton and Lily Forester, American fugitives on the run from drug charges, among others. Filmed entirely inside the world of VR, the documentary WE MET IN VIRTUAL REALITY captures the excitement and surprising intimacy of a burgeoning cultural movement, demonstrating the power of online connection in an isolated world. This one comes from writer/director Joe Hunting via the Sundance Festival and debuts WEDNESDAY, JULY 27.

HBO MAX Original Documentary Films: On THURSDAY, JULY 21 two documentaries get uploaded to the service. One examines a murder case and the other celebrates movie icons. PACTO BRUTAL (O Assassinato de Daniella Perez) is the crime story. Actress Daniella Perez was brutally killed by Guilherme de Pádua and his ex-wife Paula Thomaz on December 28, 1992. De Pádua had blamed Perez for his diminished position in a soap opera in which the couple had previously appeared. The new documentary series will document Perez’s mother, Glória Perez, as she seeks justice for her daughter. And the celebrities in THE LAST MOVIE STARS are Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. They are the subject of a new docuseries directed by Ethan Hawke. The couple became a Hollywood power couple after meeting on the set of a film and going on to feature opposite one other in other films. The work unfolds over six installments. A sports documentary arrives a week later on THURSDAY, JULY 28. It is called CITIZEN ASHE. This Arthur Ashe documentary by Rex Miller and Sam Pollard, which first broadcast on CNN, tells of the athlete’s life as an outspoken opponent of South African apartheid and an advocate for AIDS patients, in addition to being the first great male tennis player in the country.

HBO Original Special: Comedian and actress Nikki Glaser, host and executive producer of hit Max Original reality dating series FBOY Island, showcases her shockingly honest style of comedy in her first hour-long HBO comedy special, NIKKI GLASER: GOOD CLEAN FILTH, debuting SATURDAY, JULY 16 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT). The special will debut on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.

Taped late last year at the Paramount Theater in Denver, Colorado in front of a sold-out audience, Nikki Glaser takes on a range of topics in her brutally honest yet conversational style. Whether she’s dishing about sex, outlining the do’s and dont’s of dating (and how to trick someone into marriage), or oversharing about her (not-so-private) parts, Glaser delivers an hour of unapologetic and no-holds-barred comedy… not for mere shock value, but to be open about topics often considered “taboo.” Her ability to joke about her most humiliating moments as a woman in the modern world is not just for the laughs, she’s also adamant about being the empowering voice for women that she yearned for as a confused adolescent.

HBO Max Kids & Family: There is always a healthy representation in this category. The one new program to note is BUGS BUNNY BUILDERS BugsBunnyBuilders-1which starts uploads on TUESDAY, JULY 26. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the new preschool series is a first of its kind in Looney Tunes history, combining the wackiness, humor, and slapstick of the iconic characters with a modern Humancentric Learning curriculum. The educational framework will promote children’s fascination with building and design, helping preschoolers cultivate essential skills—including self-expression, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, scientific and mathematical thinking—and emphasizing that if you can imagine it, you can build it! New episodes also begin for CRAIG OF THE CREEK on TUESDAY, JULY 12, WE BABY BEARS, beginning TUESDAY, JULY 19 and LOVE MONSTER on THURSDAY, JUNE 28. Plus, there is always SESAME STREET.

HBO Sports: I think Gumbel & company are taking a July break which leaves a documentary to hold down the sports front. It is entitled EDGE OF THE EARTH. The four-part documentary series from HBO and Teton Gravity Research offers a thrilling blend of action-adventure sport, travel journal, and nature documentary and follows four groups of elite action-adventure athletes on four unique, never-before-accomplished missions. Taking place around the globe, within awe-inspiring, undiscovered realms of nature, each installment features a different team of adventurers journeying into the wild to take on incredible endeavors of physical prowess and mental fortitude. It debuts TUESDAY, JULY 12 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT) with new episodes airing on subsequent Tuesdays at the same time.

Other Movies & Shows: The TV shows HBO Max has access to fill up this section and will fill up your viewing time. Genndy Tartakovsky’s PRIMAL is a good place to start. There is also KUNG FU Season 2, WALKER Season 2 and SUPERMAN & LOIS Season 2. Add to that RAT IN THE KITCHEN and the DOCTOR WHO: EVE OF DALEKS special and you are set. Explore the streaming service for more. Let’s single out one, yes?

Next Month’s Tease: Look out for Pierpoint & Co.

Last month’s answer – We guessed that Robert Quinlan C., better known as Bob Costas would be present in July, but he is not. Maybe he’ll be back in August then.

Final Clip: What would summer be without some burgers!

Enjoy HBO and HBO Watch!
