HBOChristmas-300x255Ho, Ho, Ho and here we go! Though there may not be a dramatic series to usher out 2017 HBO is still filled with entertaining cinematic gifts for everyone. Below we unwrap some of the highlights to be found on HBO schedule in December. There is a comedy series finale, stand-up comedy, dramatic movies and a mini series. Plus, there is plenty of more choices across all of HBO’s channels and platforms. As many of you gear up for festive holiday cheer don’t forget to include the fun of HBO entertainment. 

 

Original Series: We start with the conclusion of the long-anticipated ninth season of Larry Davis and company with CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM. It ends its ten-episode run on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 03 from 10:00-10:50pm ET. It can only finish one way for this curmudgeon and that is in a pretty, pretty, funny manner.

Okay Larry, enough grumping on our holiday fun. Now, all we are left to wonder is just how many more years do we have to wait for a Season Ten?

AllDefComedy02-300x242It took a few years for Larry David to return but not quite as long for producer Russell Simmons to get his brand back on HBO. Serving once again as executive producer Simmons presents the all-new stand-up series ALL DEF COMEDY which debuts FRIDAY, DECEMBER 01 (10:00-10:30pm), followed by new editions subsequent Fridays, with the finale airing FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29 (10:30-11:00pm). Hosted by Tony Rock, the show features stand-up performances in a variety of styles from known and up-and-coming comics. We would show you the trailer one more time but HBO or Youtube has pulled it.

VICE  NEWS  TONIGHT,  the half-hour nightly newscast from  VICE  Media and HBO, debuts a new edition FRIDAY,  DECEMBER 01 (7:30-8:00pm), followed by other new editions subsequent weeknights Monday through Friday. Here is an actual recent installment if you don’t happen to watch the news on HBO:

 

Movies: After a day of holiday shopping on Saturdays in December take a break by settling in for the theatrical movie premiere of the night. There is a bit of variety to enjoy each week with UNFORGETTABLE, LOGAN, GOING IN STYLE, THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE and KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD.

In UNFORGETTABLE Tessa Connover (Katherine Heigl) is barely coping with the end of her marriage when her ex-husband, David (Geoff Stults), becomes happily engaged to Julia Banks (Rosario Dawson)—not only bringing Julia into the home they once shared but also into the life of their daughter, Lily. Tessa’s jealousy soon takes a pathological turn until she will stop at nothing to turn Julia’s dream into her ultimate nightmare. It debuts SATURDAY, DECEMBER 02 (7:15-08:50pm). Logan’s (Hugh Jackman) life of isolation and caring for an ailing Professor X is suddenly put on hold, and he is tasked with protecting a remarkable young girl in a journey that leads him to face off against villains and evil forces in LOGAN, debuting SATURDAY, DECEMBER 09 (8:00-10:20pm). The film stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd   Holbrook, Stephan Merchant, and introducing Dafne Keen. Directed by James Mangold, story by James Mangold, screenplay by Scott Frank & James Mangold and Michael Green.

Movies_GoingInStyleposterWhen their pensions are frozen after a bank robbery, a group of retired men decide to get revenge by robbing a bank themselves. Starring Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and  Alan  Arkin, the comedy  GOING  IN  STYLE  debuts  SATURDAY,  DECEMBER 16 (8:00-9:40pm. THE  ZOOKEEPER’S  WIFE  tells the real-life story of  Antonina  Żabiński and her husband, Dr. Jan Żabiński, who worked at the Warsaw Zoo during World War II. After being forced to report to the Reich’s new zoologist, the couple work to save Jews living in the Warsaw Ghetto. Starring Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh, this moving film debuts SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23 (8:00-10:10pm). When his father is killed and his uncle, Vortigern, takes the crown, Arthur is forced to grow up in the depths of the city, unaware of his royal roots – until he pulls the famous sword from the stone and his legacy becomes clear. Starring Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD debuts SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30 (8:00-10:10pm).

 

People_BenBradlee-150x150HBO Documentary Films: The documentaries are still coming one after the other as if they are trying to burn through the ones they have before a new year begins. THE NEWSPAPERMAN: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BEN BRADLEE starts us off. It profiles the legendary executive editor (pictured) of the Washington Post, who became a national figure in the 1970s  when he challenged the federal government over the right to publish the Pentagon Papers  –  and later brought down  Richard  Nixon after the newspaper’s investigation of the Watergate scandal. This fascinating story debuts MONDAY, DECEMBER 04 (8:00-9:30pm). HAPPENING: A CLEAN ENERGY REVOLUTION, debuting MONDAY,Docs_Happening02-150x150 DECEMBER 11 (8:00 – 9:15pm) follows filmmaker Jamie Redford on a colorful journey to discover the leading edge of clean energy across the U.S. Unlikely entrepreneurs in communities from Georgetown, Tex.  to Buffalo,  NY reveal  pioneering  clean  energy  solutions  that  are  creating  jobs,  turning  profits  and making communities stronger and healthier. His discoveries underscore issues of human resilience, social justice, embracing the future and finding hope for humanity’s survival. AGNELLI is a biographical portrait of Gianni Agnelli, the legendary Italian industrialist, jet-setter and fashion trendsetter, as told by family, friends, lovers, professional confidantes and rivals. Debuting MONDAY, DECEMBER 18 (8:00-10:00pm), the film features archival video footage and photographs, interviews with family members, high society friends and his house staff, and insights from journalists and historians, who put Agnelli’s accomplishments and struggles in historical context. Plagued by a lifetime of mental illness, artist Ruth Litoff committed suicide at age 42 in 2008 by overdosing on prescription pills. Six years later, her younger sister decided to empty a storage unit Docs_32Pills-150x150filled with Ruth’s belongings, driven by the need to understand her illness and desire to end her life. Intimate, riveting and brutally honest, 32  PILLS: MY SISTER’S  SUICIDE, debuting THURSDAY, DECEMBER 07 (8:00-9:30pm), follows first-time director Hope Litoff as she begins a meticulous investigation of the things her sister left behind while grappling with the guilt of not being able to save her sister. 15: A QUINCEAÑERA STORY presents a collection of four short documentary films that share the unique and diverse coming-of-age stories of American Latinas preparing for the “quinceañera” – celebrations of their 15th birthdays. Five different girls’ stories are explored over the course of four films, debuting TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19 (7:00-7:30pm), followed by the other films premiering subsequent nights at the same time on 12.19, 12.20 & 12.21.

 

HBO Films/Miniseries: We got an exciting and surprising tale to present that we did not even know was coming our way until October. Get ready for GUNPOWDER. The miniseries, debuting MONDAY, DECEMBER 18 (10:00-11:00pm), followed by the other parts the subsequent two nights at the same time, 12.19  12.20, is a three-part thriller based on the real-life 17th-century events that led to Guy Fawkes Day. The miniseries stars Kit Harington (GAME OF THRONES) as Robert Catesby, who was the driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 London.  A  committed  Catholic at a time when  Protestant England persecutes Catholics relentlessly, Catesby’s refusal to abandon his religion brings him to the edge of financial,  social and psychological ruin. Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss and Liv Tyler also star.

 

HBO Special: Comedian  Michelle Wolf stars in her first HBO stand-up special featuring her laugh-out-loud observations on feminism, dating, and other social issues, when MICHELLE WOLF: NICE LADY debuts SATURDAY, DECEMBER 02 (9:00–10:00pm). Taped in August at Skirball Center in New York City, the exclusive presentation showcases her signature voice as she takes on a wide range of topics, including her surprising thoughts on feminism, the environment and how nature is sexist, the mystery surrounding public bathrooms, why Hillary Clinton could not be a “nice lady,” how it’s easier to conceive a baby than to make a croissant and more of life’s everyday absurdities.

 

HBO Kids: SESAME STREET continues its 48th season SATURDAY, DECEMBER 02 (9:00-9:30am), with other new weekly episodes subsequent Saturdays at the same time. Here are the episodes to help get the youngsters through the holidays.

Mother Goose tries to write a nursery rhyme for Elmo, but doesn’t know anything about him. With help from his friend Abby, she is able to write a rhyme about some of the things that make Elmo special. Guest star: Kate McKinnon.

Martians have landed on Sesame Street to find out what Earth people are like. Elmo shows them around and helps them learn that people come in lots of sizes, their skin comes in lots of colors, and people speak lots of languages. The Martians also learn that even though there are many kinds of people, anyone can be friends!

Rudy’s favorite sweater no longer fits him, so Nina suggests having a clothing drive in the neighborhood. That way, everyone can give clothes they don’t need to people who do need them. Rudy’s sweater goes to a little girl who is very excited to wear it.

Featuring a top lineup of contributors, the next monthly edition debuts TUESDAY, DEC. 12 (10:00-11:00pm). THE FIGHT GAME WITH JIM LAMPLEY continues WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13 (11:00-11:30pm), with a special year-end edition debuting WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27 at the same time. Hosted by the four-time Sports Emmy winner, who has hosted  HBO Boxing since joining the network in 1988, the show is provocative, engaging and informative experience that delves into intriguing storylines, news and issues that are top-of-mind in boxing. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: MIGUEL COTTO VS. SADAM ALI AND REY VARGAS VS. OSCAR NEGRETE will be presented SATURDAY, DECEMBER 02 (10:00pm) from Madison Square Garden in New York, exclusively on HBO. The evening’s main event features the final fight for Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto (41-5, 33 KOs) who will be defending his junior middleweight title against Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali (25-1, 14 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout. In the opening fight, Rey Vargas (30-0, 22 KOs) of Mexico City defends his super bantamweight title against  Colombia’s  Oscar Negrete (17-0, 7 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round match. The HBO Sports team will call the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino. HBO Boxing_SaundersVsLemieux-300x182WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING:  BILLY JOE SAUNDERS VS. DAVID LEMIEUX will be presented SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16 (9:40pm) from a soon-to-be-announced venue in Montreal, Canada, exclusively on HBO.  In the evening’s  main event,  the  UK’s  Billy  Joe  Saunders  (25-0, 12  KOs) defends his world middleweight title against former world middleweight champion David Lemieux (38-3, 33 KOs) in a 12-round match. The opening bout will be announced at a later date. The HBO Sports team will call the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino. HBO Sports presents fight fans with a holiday treat when BOXING’S BEST OF 2017, replaying the year’s biggest fights, airs on four consecutive evenings, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 26 (11:00pm), WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 27 (11:30pm), THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28 (11:00pm) and FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29 (11:00pm).

 

Other Movies and Shows: HBO FIRST LOOK is taking an insider’s look at three movies soon to the Cineplex. Get behind-the-scenes and plot information on PITCH PERFECT 3, on 12.11, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN on 12.14 and on THE POST on 12.20. Five more movies are set to debut, though not on Saturdays, on the channel. First is DEEPWATER HORIZON on 12.03. Mark Wahlberg Movies_Marauders-202x300and Kurt Russell star in the disaster epic that details the corporate greed that led to a massive explosion and fire aboard a drilling rig that left 11 dead and resulted in the worst oil spill ever seen. Also on 12.03 is GONE IN 60 SECONDS. Nicolas Cage plays a legendary car thief who has to come out of retirement to rescue his kid brother from a gangster who wants him to steal 50 cars in just one night. WILSON debuts on 12.06. How do you describe him? Let’s just say that neurotic, impulsive and misanthropic just scratch the surface with this guy. Woody Harrelson is superb as the quirky Wilson who is stunned after ex-wife Laura Dern reveals he has a teenage daughter–a shock that launches Wilson on a bizarre quest that changes all of their lives forever. On 12.11 you can catch the premiere of MARAUDERS about an FBI investigation into a series of violent bank robberies executed with military precision that uncovers a myriad of suspects and a deeper conspiracy. This twisty mystery stars Christopher Meloni, Bruce Willis, Dave Bautista and Adrian Grenier (ENTOURAGE). The last one is called THE TAKE about a rogue CIA agent in Paris who hunts an American pickpocket running for his life after he unwittingly swipes a bag containing a bomb. Idris Elba stars and it starts on 12.15.   

 

HBO’s Other Platforms: Here is a quick pick or two from each of the remaining channels. HBO Latino: KENKE (Weed) debuts on 12.01. Panamanian society’s double standards are examined in this tale of a young professional who is assigned to keep his teenaged cousin away from marijuana, even though he himself indulges in smoking pot. Also on 12.01 is the premiere of two short films. First at 16 minutes is VeggieTalesPirates-300x188NEON LIGHTS followed by LA MADRINA (The Mother of The Bride) at 11 minutes. A woman whose life is centered around caring for her ailing father finds her world falling apart when he announces that he plans to marry his nurse in MARIA (Y LOS DEMAS), (Maria and Everything Else debuting 12.08. On 12.15 is the premiere of ME ESTAS MATANDO SUSANA (You’re Killing Me Susana) starring Gael Garcia Bernal and EL AMPARO, about the tragic 1988 murders of 14 fishermen on the Venezuela-Colombia border begins on 12.22. HBO Family: LA LA LAND and HIDDEN FIGURES are over on this channel if you haven’t seen them. So is Michael Keaton in both JACK FROST and GUNG HO. Also is the not-to-be-missed THE PIRATES WHO DON”T DO ANYTHING: A VEGGIE TALES MOVIE. HBO Signature: I simply suggest ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE with Cate Blanchette as the Queen; HBO Europe’s WASTELAND arrives; Halle Berry in MONSTER’S BALL and Matthew McConaughey in THIRTEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ONE THING. HBO Comedy: Characters like Austin Powers, Robin Hood (and his men in tights), Mr. Bean, Mr. Woodcock and Mr. Destiny all appear here. HBO Zone: The 2008 version of THE INCREDIBLE HULK, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, THE DARK KNIGHT, DAREDEVIL and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE all play here. Hmm, is there a theme around here? HBONow/Go: Some big programming events are about to happen on the streaming sites over the next couple of months. Starting in December, HBO INTERNATIONAL content is arriving. It begins with the series WASTELAND from the Czech Republic followed soon by others from across the globe.

There is the SPECIES franchise – SPECIES, SPECIES II and SPECIES: THE AWAKENING. Also, find the TREMORS franchise – TREMORS, TREMORS II: AFTERSHOCKS, TREMORS 3 BACK TO PERFECTION and TREMORS 4: THE LEGEND BEGINS. There are about a dozen more movies added. A featured collection right now is Cozy Flicks To Warm Your Heart: CORRINA, CORRINA, EMPIRE FALLS, FINDING NEVERLAND, GREEN FRIED TOMATOES, GOOD WILL HUNTING, GIRL WITH THE PEARL EARRING, LOVING, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT, so find the time to go explore HBONow/Go.

 

Cinemax: This channel is touting five theatrical premieres to add to its large list of movies. They are THE BELKO EXPERIMENT, INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, WITHIN, TABLE 19 and WAR Movies_TheBelkoExperiment-200x300DOGS. Eighty American employees in Bogota, Colombia are held hostage in their office and forced into a deadly social experiment when THE BELKO EXPERIMENT debuts FRIDAY, DECEMBER 01 (8:00-9:30pm). John Gallagher, Jr. and Tony Goldwyn star in the thriller. When the Earth is attacked by outside invaders, scientists and leaders must unite in the fight of their lives in INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, debuting FRIDAY, DECEMBER 08 (8:00-10:00pm). The film stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Maika Monroe, Travis Tope, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Judd Hirsch. Directed by Roland Emmerich; A family looking for a fresh start moves into a new home, but soon realizes something isn’t right when WITHIN debuts FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15 (8:00-9:30pm). This psychological thriller stars Michael Vartan and Nadine Velazquez. Eloise (Anna Kendrick) decides to attend her friend’s wedding, despite her recent break-up with the bride’s brother, only to learn she is at the “random” table, where she bonds with the other unwanted in TABLE 19, debuting FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22 (8:00-9:30pm). Craig Robinson, June Squibb, Lisa Kudrow and Stephen Merchant also star in the comedy. Based on the true story of David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, WAR DOGS follows two young friends, who, during the Iraq war, become rich by taking advantage of a government initiative that allows them to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star in the comedy-drama, debuting FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29 (8:00-9:55pm). There is a whole slew of other movies to of course because Cinemax is one of the biggest showcases for movies out there.

 

Next Month’s Tease: You already know that DIVORCE and HIGH MAINTAINANCE are leading off the new year, but what else? How about David Robert Jones? You’ll just Google it and discover that it is the birth name of someone famous coming in January to HBO.

If you are a comic book and/or Marvel fan you knew that James Howlett (the name we gave you last month) became Logan or the adamantium-clawed Wolverine. You also already know that you can catch the movie Logan on HBO in December.
