Here we go! I don’t know in which camp you sit in – the one fed up with all things GoT or the one excited to inhabit the world again. You are faced with that call as HOUSE OF THE DRAGON arrives this month. Of course, we will announce it, but there is plenty of other content at our fingertips too in August. Here is a sampling of what’s ahead during the dog days of summer. Seek out what’s on for August 2022.

A few quick points:

We’re back to the actions of Pierpoint & Co.

We’re ready for some football Detroit-style

Our summer travels take us to L.A., LA & TX

Plus, international locales like Belfast and Brazil

and a place where there be dragons!

HBO Original Series: The reign of House Targaryen begins. House of the Dragon, the 10-episode prequel to GAME OF THRONES, is coming to HBO and HBO Max on SUNDAY, AUGUST 21 (9:00-10:00pm ET). Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.

Paddy Considine (THE THIRD DAY, THE OUTSIDER), Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel and Rhys Ifans star. Additional cast members include Milly Alcock, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Emily Carey, Harry Collett, Ryan Corr, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jefferson Hall, David Horovitch, Wil Johnson, John Macmillan, Graham McTavish, Ewan Mitchell, Theo Nate, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, Phia Saban, Gavin Spokes, and Savannah Steyn. See our coverage to date here.

Martin and Ryan Condal serve as co-creators on the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are showrunners, and the pair also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt. Clare Kilner and Geeta Vasant Patel also direct the series. Greg Yaitanes is the director and a co-executive producer. GAME OF THRONES and WESTWORLD composer Ramin Djawadi scored the series.

Of course, they are not going to spoil the dragon eggs by revealing plotlines via episode synopses. The best we have for now is our first look at the trailer.

Also of note, GAME OF THRONES gets retooled as it now will appear on HBO Max in 4K Ultra HD, HDR 10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, whatever the DracARyshell that all means. Plus, you can curl up to these shows with your very own virtual dragon! House of the Dragon: DracARys is a new augmented reality app. With it, fans around the world will be able to “hatch” and raise their own virtual dragons at home. Each dragon will be unique to its user, and as it grows it will develop its own look and temperament driven by its keeper’s interactions with it, all based on the lore from George R.R. Martin’s world. Users will also learn Valyrian words from “House of the Dragon” to command their dragon through a bespoke voice recognition system. Dragons will grow to enormous size, hitting developmental milestones on their way to full adulthood where they will be able to roam the world for other users across the world to see and interact with.

As promised, there is other content like the return of INDUSTRY. It’s Season Two debuts MONDAY, AUGUST 1 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. WESTWORLD still has us scratching our heads over Humans & Hosts, doesn’t it? Season Four wraps up soon. It starts for the month on SUNDAY, AUGUST 07 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT) with “Metanoia.” That term has to do with a fundamental change in one’s personality. Hell. Hosts can do that with a couple of keystrokes! The final episode, on 08.14 is “Que Será, Será”; you know, ‘whatever will be will be’.

The other show carrying over is THE REHEARSAL. Find it FRIDAY, AUGUST 05 (11:00-11:30pm ET/PT). It has three episodes left taking it until 08.19. In the half-hour program, Nathan Fielder questions how much of his life is written for himself. He utilizes a group of artists and other professionals to help him manufacture a life so he and complete strangers can “rehearse” life’s key moments. Huh? It’s dramatized social science, I guess? No one around here, to my knowledge, watches this so if anyone reading this does watch, just come on over and explain it to us, okay?

LWT_Oliver2022The following two shows are back from a summer break. REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER starts the month FRIDAY, AUGUST 05 (10:00-11:00pm ET) and has a new edition each week in August. LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER follows suit SUNDAY, AUGUST 07 (11:00-11:30pm ET) but skips the 08.28 show. Good gracious Oliver, I swear you became a U. S. citizen just so you could take long holidays off. Who takes a week-long Labor Day break? Because I’m sure you are not airing on 09.04 either. Yeah, if you can dish it out, you should be able to take it, not that you read this. I’m done.

Original Series Exclusive to HBO Max: I’m surprised to see that HBO Max isn’t touting a new series this month. There are a few returning shows we can look at but no big scripted show is launching. Either WB/D is crippling the streamer service or they felt HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, INDUSTRY, and RAPSH!T were enough. Hey, let’s talk RAPSH!T. It is the newest work out there on the site and the newest from Issa Rae. It continues with new episodes uploading every THURSDAY in August. Last month we were only able to give you a teaser, so here is the official trailer:

The logline states – Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a disparate group of Max_PrettyLittleLiars-Post-205x300teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed by their parents two decades ago…as well as their own. In the dark, coming-of-age, horror-tinged drama PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: ORIGINAL SIN, we find ourselves miles away from Rosewood, but within the existing Pretty Little Liars universe — in a brand-new town, with a new generation of Little Liars. It continues its run with Episodes #4 & #5 uploading THURSDAY, AUGUST 04. Two more installments arrive on 08.11 and the final episodes drop on 08.18. Also, Nikki Glaser and FBOY ISLAND present the final episodes of Season Two on THURSDAY, AUGUST 04.

Returning with new episodes on THURSDAY, AUGUST 04 is the sophomore season of SWEET LIFE: LOS ANGELES. It gives a unique look at what it means to be young, Black, ambitious, and in constant pursuit of one’s dreams. Exploring themes of loyalty, legacy, and love, this coming-of-age series follows a group of long-time friends in South L.A., as they navigate the relatable, Max_HouseOfHo_S2chaotic, mid-20s moments at the quarter-life mark and propel each other into adulthood success. The enterprising and charismatic core cast is comprised of Amanda Scott, Briana Jones, Cheryl Des Vignes, Jaylenn Hart, Jerrold Smith II, P’Jae Compton, Rebecca Magett, Rob Lee, and Tylynn Burns. Remember, this reality series is also from Issa Rae’s HOORAE Productions. Another reality series of the same ilk is also returning. Find Season Two of HOUSE OF HO beginning THURSDAY, AUGUST 25 with three out of ten episodes with the rest following in September. The series focuses on the Vietnamese American Ho family of Houston, Texas. They were evidently entertaining enough to bring back. SELENA + CHEF also arrives with Season Four sometime in August.

HBO International Titles: No sooner do I create this new category and there is a dearth of international content. In fact, WB/D has slashed foreign fare, but that’s for another post. From HBO Latino I offer the half-hour gig ENTRE NOS: JESUS SEPULVEDA: MR. TOUGH LIFE. It will debut on FRIDAY, AUGUST 05 (10:00-10:30pm ET/PT) on HBO Latino and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Thanks to his own experiences with a tough dad and an even tougher therapist, Sepulveda has finally realized why Latinos love partying and mistrust therapy. Witness a group session full of stamina and hilarious revelations and discover one of LA’s funniest new voices in stand-up comedy.

PicoDeNeblinaNot noted but sniffed out by your truly is a second season of PICO DA NEBLINA. It’s from HBO Brazil and is set in a fictional modern-day Sao Paulo, where marijuana has been legalized. Season 1 of this series followed 29-year-old Biriba (Luis Navarro), a drug dealer who decides to give up his criminal life and enter the legal drug sales industry. Unfortunately for Biriba, going straight proved more difficult than he could have imagined. The premiere season had 10 episodes yet HBO’s schedule-bot shows episode 11 from 2022 debuting on FRIDAY, AUGUST 12 (10:00-11:00pm ET/PT) on HBO Latino. It is followed by new episodes on 08.19 & 08.26 as well. Thought you could get something past me, didn’t you!

HBO Saturday Night Movies: A rundown of the primetime Saturday night movies (all beginning at 8:00pm ET/PT, unless noted) on the HBO Channel are the debut of BELFAST on AUGUST 06; DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY with Ben Stiller & Rip Torn on AUGUST 20 and THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG on AUGUST 27.

BELFAST is a British coming-of-age story written and directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan, and newcomer Jude Hill. The film, which Branagh has described as his “most personal film”, follows a young boy’s childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland, at the beginning of The Troubles in 1969. It lands SATURDAY, AUGUST 06 (8:00-9:40pm).

Movies_Wolf-150x150Movies Exclusive to HBO Max: There are always plenty of movies uploading to the streamer but a press release once us to note specific films from the distribution company A24. So, take note of AMY, ROOM, EX MACHINA, THE SPECTACULAR NOW, UNDER THE SKIN and hit films BELFAST and WOLF arriving to the service. Most of those movies are older ones but WOLF is from 2021 and uploads on FRIDAY, AUGUST 26

HBO Documentary Films: Two titles to recognize in this category. First is THE PRINCESS debuting SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 (8:00-9:50pm) in place of the usual weekend movie. Man, she was a beloved celebrity figure and all, but the current Documentary team is doing major overkill on the whole celebrity biography thing. At any rate, this work is a visceral submersion into Diana’s life in the constant and often intrusive glare of the media spotlight. The film unfolds as if it were in the present, allowing viewers to experience the overwhelming adoration, but also intense scrutiny of Diana’s every move and the constant Docs_KatrinaBabiesjudgment of her character. Through archival material, the film is also a reflection of society at the time, revealing the public’s own preoccupations, fears, aspirations, and desires. It draws solely from contemporaneous archival audio and video footage to take audiences back to key events. The other title is called KATRINA BABIES. From director Edward Buckles, Jr., this one offers an intimate look at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and its impact on the youth of New Orleans. An entire generation has grappled with the lifelong impact of having their childhood redefined by tragedy. Buckles, who was 12 when the hurricane hit, documents the stories of his childhood peers who survived the storm while opening a door for his own healing, capturing the spirit and resilience of New Orleans. Find it on HBO beginning WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24 (09:00-10:30pm ET/PT).

HBO MAX Original Documentary Films: No new documentaries are listed, but there are enough to supplement your viewing habits. We, for example, are viewing & reviewing THE LAST MOVIE STARS. CITIZEN ASHE also just arrived on 07.28. Look at last month’s What’s On for specifics. Undoubtedly, a new title will drop after this posting.

MaxMovies_Belle

HBO Max Kids & Family: We lead with DC SHOWCASES SHORT: CONSTANTINE – THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY, where the DC character, who is a master of occult sciences, gets showcased in a little animated adventure of his own. It arrives MONDAY, AUGUST 01. An Anime feature also gets its premiere. It is entitled BELLE and the title character is actually a girl named Suzu. Suzu is a shy high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters “U”, a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a globally-beloved singer. SmilingFriends-300x168Find her on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 03. SUNDAY, AUGUST 07 is the date for the SMILING FRIENDS GO TO BRAZIL! That’s right, The Smiling Friends finally get to relax in a beautiful Brazilian beach town. Pim works on his novel; Charlie binges a load of torrent shows on his portable hard drive; Allan and Glep enjoy some long-awaited chill-out time at the beach. And if you don’t know who they are well, you just haven’t been watching. Oh, and VICTOR AND VALENTINO get new Season 3 episodes uploaded on FRIDAY, AUGUST 26.

HBO Sports: Well, I was wrong. Bryant Gumbel’s HBO gig did land a July installment. Covered that round was the Phillie Phanatic, competitive bird watching and Sumo wrestling. The press release we work off of here doesn’t show REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL listed for August either. Here is hoping that Zaslav hasn’t canceled it and that the sports show will arrive in the latter part of August. Look for it. We do have a confirmed date, and have known it for a while, that HARD KNOCKS indeed returns. Get pump for gridiron action HBO-style when HARD KNOCKS: TRAINING CAMP WITH THE DETROIT LIONS arrives on TUESDAY, AUGUST 09 (10:00-11:00pm ET/PT). Camera crews head to the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park, Michigan to create a 5-episode season. The cinema verité show will focus on the daily lives and routines of players and coaches. and will chronicle head coach Dan Campbell entering his second season leading the team which features an intriguing mix of young emerging stars, established veterans, free agent additions and highly regarded rookie hopefuls during their preseason. As the old saying goes, “are you ready for some football?” HBOWatch, as always will review.

HardKnocks_Lions Other Movies & Shows: Our main focus this month will be movies and as always there are plenty of them cycling back onto the schedule. Some are older Movies_Ivanhoe-1952classics that can be found on the TCM Hub on Max. Titles include EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK from 1972, FANTASTIC VOYAGE from 1966, GASLIGHT from 1944 and IVANHOE (pictured) from 1952. The more recent fare to seek out includes CHOCOLATE CITY from 2015, HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS ANDF PARTIES from 2017, HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND ALIENATE PEOPLE from 2008 and THE FIELD GUIDE TO EVIL from 2018. Well, come on, I tried to pick movies you might have never seen before instead of the popular ones. How about this popular film from 1963 – THE GREAT ESCAPE?

Next Month’s Tease: A visual clue this month. Due to Emmerich, we have to ask why the stunned look on these astronauts’ faces?

TeaseForSeptember2022

Last month’s answer – Pierpont & Co. was the clue which is the big business at the heart of INDUSTRY. Seek out its sophomore season this month!

Final Clip: Is this cool?

Enjoy HBO and HBO Watch!

If you are referring to Bruce Springsteen’s concert film WESTERN STARS, it is available to stream on HBO Max. You can watch it at your leisure as long as you are a subscriber. If you get HBO via a cable provider, the content is not airing at this time, but you can access it via HBONow.com.

Hi Jef,

Any word on when Season four of “Succession” will be shown? Thanks.

Jef Dinsmore August 9, 2022 - 7:06 pm

Not exactly. Sometime in Winter/Spring of 2023, I’d guess. But I can tell you that Season Four got into production in late June, so the process is underway.

This is it. I’ve been waiting for what, about 3 years for a spinoff? I can already tell I’m going to be a big HOD fan. Sorry not sorry. I am intrigued by next month’s tease though I’m not a big Halle berry fan.

We are glad you are stoked! Stick around because we plan to review each and every episode. You’ve got to wait to find out what Berry is gobsmacked over though.
