Some big titles and names drop on the schedule this coming month. April has been a strong month for a while now. GAME OF THRONES, GIRLS and SILICON VALLEY all debuted in the month of April. I think you are going to like the diverse programming you can find on HBO and HBO Max. No, I guarantee it. Let’s waste no more time. Let’s find out what’s on.

A few quick points:

  • The team of Simon/Pelecanos returns to Baltimore!
  • We are off to Tokyo on HBO Max
  • We’re animated with CLOSE ENOUGH
  • Tony Hawk is still doing his thing
  • and it’s about time we had another HBO Films Presentation

HBO Original Series: We start with the new dramatic hour that will please fans of THE WIRE I’m guessing. Created and executive produced by George Pelecanos and David Simon comes the six-part limited series WE OWN THIS CITY. Based on the book by Baltimore Sun reporter Justin Fenton, this work chronicles the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force and the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work. It offers the grit & the grime in a way that only this creative team can master.

Jon Bernthal, Wunmi Mosaku, Jamie Hector, McKinley Belcher III, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Josh Charles, Dagmara Domińczyk, Rob Brown, Don Harvey, David Corenswet, Larry Mitchell, Ian Duff, Delaney Williams, and Lucas Van Engen star with guest roles by Treat Williams, Gabrielle Carteris, Tray Chaney, Domenick Lombardozzi, Thaddeus Street, Jermaine Crawford, Nathan E. Corbett, Chris Clanton, Anwan Glover, Bobby Brown, Michael Salconi, Susan Rome, Kim Tuvin, and Maria Broom. Created and executive produced by George Pelecanos and David Simon; directed and executive produced by Reinaldo Marcus Green; executive produced by Nina K. Noble, Ed Burns, and Kary Antholis. Co-executive producer Bill Zorzi. Writers include Pelecanos, Simon, Burns, Zorzi and D. Watkins. WE OWN THIS CITY debuts MONDAY, APRIL 25 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

TheBaby_BabyOne more new series arrives in April. It is THE BABY, which we just mentioned not long ago. The HBO original eight-episode limited series THE BABY, from creators Siân Robins-Grace and Lucy Gaymer, debuts on SUNDAY, APRIL 24 (10:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. A horror comedy co-production with SKY, and produced by SISTER and Proverbial Pictures, THE BABY presents a darkly funny, raw examination of motherhood, from the perspective of a woman who doesn’t want to be one. Michelle De Swarte (The Duchess) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes. Controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. As she discovers the true extent of the baby’s deadly nature, Natasha makes increasingly desperate attempts to get rid of it. She doesn’t want a baby. But the baby definitely wants her.

Next is a look at returning favorites. We have three that we’ve been waiting through the pandemic for. Premiering its third season on FRIDAY, APRIL 08 (11:00-11:30pm ET/PT) is A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW. Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black and Skye Townsend have assembled again to offer a six-episode season filled with sketch comedy from a Black female perspective and it filled with plenty of guest appearances. Those guesting include Ava DuVernay, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Raven-Symoné, Wanda Sykes, David Alan Grier, Kyla Pratt, Jemele Hill, Holly Robinson Peete, Kel Mitchell, Michael Ealy, Wayne Brady, Bob the Drag Queen, Vanessa Williams, Lance Reddick, Loni Love, Cari Champion, Shangela, Trevor Jackson, Tommy Davidson, Jay Pharoah, Jidenna, and Essence Atkins.

It’s been a long while since we’ve seen Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, Stephen Root and Anthony Carrigan. The wait is over as BARRY returns. Find it debuting SUNDAY, APRIL 24 (10:00-10:30pm ET/PT). Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry (Hader) is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season three finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.  The first two seasons of BARRY received a total of thirty Emmy nominations and received six of them. Season Three has got to be good!

No definitive air date is given but the promise is there that GENTLEMAN JACK, with Suranne Jones, arrives in this coming month. Yorkshire, 1834. All eyes are on Anne Lister and Ann Walker as they set up home together at Shibden Hall as wife and wife, determined to combine their estates and become a power couple. Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit frightens the locals as much as her unconventional love life and, with Halifax on the brink of revolution, her refusal to GentlemanJack_S2Joneskeep a low profile becomes provocative and dangerous. Season two will again use the real-life diaries of Anne Lister – part of which were written in code – as its source, with every part of Lister’s story based on historical fact and the five million words she wrote in her journals.

Focus now shifts to the series continuing their runs in April. WINNING TIME: THE RISE OF THE LAKERS DYNASTY, the ten-episode series that showcases the dynamics of the players and the staff of the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers, continues SUNDAY, APRIL 03 (9:00-10:00pm ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Hey, no foolin’, REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER continues his 20th season stint beginning FRIDAY, APRIL 04 (10:00-11:00pm ET). Of course, the hot topics on everyone’s mind, including his, have been the Ukraine and Putin. You know, it always seems that that show picks its guests at the very last moment making it hard to predict what the topics could possibly be in advance. Folks keep tuning in though and get surprised. It seems he skips April 15; last-minute taxes, I guess. LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER kicks off its month on SUNDAY, APRIL 04 (11:00-11:30pmET). Here is a clip of a recent topic:

Original Series Exclusive to HBO Max: Another diverse set of scripted programming graces us in April on the streaming site. You can always search by title or seek out the Just Added category to find all the latest content HBO Max has to offer. This month we start off with the gripping TOKYO VICE. Loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, the crime drama series, filmed on location in Tokyo, captures Adelstein’s (played by Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late ‘90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem. Joining Elgort are Academy Award nominees Ken Watanabe & Rinko Kikuchi as well as Rachel Keller, Ella Rumpf, Hideaki Ito, Show Kasamatsu and Tomohisa Yamashita.

This Max Original crime drama series, from Endeavor Content and WOWOW, Japan’s leading premium pay TV broadcaster, debuts THURSDAY, APRIL 07 with three episodes, followed by two episodes debuting every Thursday leading up to the finale on April 28.

MadeForLove_S2Three series are returning for another round on the service, THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT with Kaley Cuoco and HBO/BBC’s MADE FOR LOVE. Season Two of the dark comedy series with Cuoco debuts THURSDAY, APRIL 21 with two episodes. The eight-episode season continues with two new episodes on April 28, followed by one episode weekly concluding May 26. Her character, Cassie Bowden, is living her best sober life in Los Angeles while moonlighting as a CIA asset in her spare time. But when an overseas assignment leads her to inadvertently witness a murder, she becomes entangled in another international intrigue. The season filmed in Los Angeles, Berlin and Reykjavik. Returning series regulars Cuoco, Zosia Mamet, Griffin Matthews, Deniz Akdeniz and Rosie Perez. Returning recurring guest stars T.R. Knight, Yasha Jackson and Audrey Grace Marshall. The season also stars new series regulars Mo McRae, Callie Hernandez and JJ Soria, as well as new recurring guest stars Alanna Ubach, Cheryl Hines, Jessie Ennis, Mae Martin, Margaret Cho, Santiago Cabrera, Sharon Stone and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Wow, impressive cast. Based on the novel by Alissa Nutting, MADE FOR LOVE (pictured)is a cynically poignant story of love and divorce. Season One followed Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti), a thirty-something woman on the run after ten years in a suffocating marriage to Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen), a controlling tech billionaire. After discovering that her husband implanted a monitoring device – the Made for Love chip – in her brain, allowing him to track her, watch her, and know her “emotional data,” Hazel fled to her desert hometown to take refuge with her aging widower father Herbert (Ray Romano) and his synthetic partner, Diane. It begins its upload on THURSDAY, APRIL 28

I had CLOSE ENOUGH bookmarked under the Kids section, but it is classified as ‘adult animation’ so I better keep it up here where it goes. From JG Quintel, comes the third season of this surreal animated comedy about a married couple, their five-year-old daughter, and their two divorced best friends/roommates, all sharing a cramped apartment on the eastside of Los Angeles. They navigate a chaotic time in their 30s as they struggle to grow up without growing old. It’s about juggling work, kids, and pursuing your dreams, all while avoiding alien fitness cults, yacht-rock vampires, and silent film era bison. Their life may not be ideal, but for now, it’s close enough. All eight episodes of the season upload on THURSDAY, APRIL 07. Max_Minx-Poster

Continuing their inaugural runs are two more series that started in March. Have you been peeking at the full-frontal male nudity found in MINX? I’m sure there is more to the story than that, but the internet certainly focuses on that fact. The show continues its ten-episode run and its final episode uploads on THURSDAY, APRIL 14. Also playing with new episodes in April is JULIA with Sarah Lancashire as master chef Julia Child. A new episode uploads every week beginning THURSDAY, APRIL 07. Also, THE GREAT POTTERY THROW DOWN gets a fifth season beginning starting THURSDAY, APRIL 14.

HBO International Titles: I think I’m slipping in a new category this month. I love the international content. Well, three HBO International titles come to the TheThawUSA via the streamer in April. We start with THE INFORMANT (A Besugo) and THE THAW (Odwilz). That first title, from Hungary, is set in 1985, behind the Iron Curtain, as Geri (Gergely Váradi) leaves for college. He is looking forward to meeting girls and partying and joins a group of radicals, led by the charismatic Száva (Márton Patkós). But Geri has a secret. He’s an informant of the totalitarian state and to save his brother, he’s been forced to spy on his new friends for State Security. This, of course, places him in a dilemma. It is an eight-part drama. The latter title, (pictured, left) is from Poland. Set in Szczecin, Poland, the series begins after the body of a young woman is discovered under the melting ice. It asks ‘Who was she? Why did she die? Who did she leave behind? Did people who are now mourning know who she really was? These questions and the search for answers will provide the main female character, a police detective played by Katarzyna Wajda, with a powerful, although initially, unconscious incentive to confront her own circumstances brought up during the case. Both titles begin uploading FRIDAY, APRIL 01

The third title is from HBO Asia, Taiwan to be precise. It is TRINITY OF SHADOWS. It is a story about criminal policewoman Hsu Tze-Wei (Sandrine Pinna), whose father was a murderer. Hsu encounters a series of rape and murder cases in which the same methods her father once used have been employed, but after trying to track down the real perpetrator, she discovers that many of the people around her have strangely ambiguous connections with the murders. Also pulled into the investigation are an up-and-coming public official and a rookie policeman Together they pursue the truth that rattles the criminal justice system from top to bottom. This story was inspired by a real case and takes 15 installments to play out. It starts uploading on THURSDAY, APRIL 07. Here is the trailer.

In unscripted fare, there is a new singing competition out there. Yeah, I’m not sure why either. HBO Max is presenting, beginning FRIDAY, APRIL 01, ONE TRUE SINGER. The catch? Uh, no new format I don’t think, but it is out of Romania! Yep. Uploading the same day is CZECH IT OUT!, a travel show checking out the culture & foodstuff of the Czech Republic.

HBO Saturday Night Movies: Keep in mind if you watch HBO content via the app then these movies upload earlier than the Saturday night listed. Here are the diverse titles for the coming month: DEATH ON THE NILE, KING RICHARD, THE FOREVER PURGE and ???

Kenneth Branaugh and Agatha Christie are just a perfect fit; made evident by DEATH ON THE NILE debuting SATURDAY, APRIL 02 (8:00-10:10pm ET). Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot’s Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer in this riveting adaptation of the classic Agatha Christie mystery. Directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot; also with Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders and Letitia Wright. Written by Michael Green, based upon the novel by Agatha Christie. A classic richly told. Returning after its Same-Day Premiere on HBO Max and theaters is KING RICHARD on (the streamer already has it; it was said to have landed on HBO last month, but it didn’t) SATURDAY APRIL 09 (8:00-10:25pm ET). The 2-hour 25-minute movie, starring Oscar nominee Will Smith for his role, follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, Serena and Venus Williams, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. THE FOREVER PURGE grabs us the next week. It’s time for the annual Purge in 2048 America— but for one deranged group, a single night of carnage just isn’t enough. Can a Texas family and their workers escape with their lives? Ana de la Reguera, Tenoch Huerta, Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Josh Lucas, and Will Patton star in this fifth chilling installment in The Purge series. Directed by Everardo Valerio Gout. What craziness is this? Find out SATURDAY, APRIL 16 (8:00-9:45pm ET).

The big question is just what is airing on SATURDAY, APRIL 23 on HBO? The Schedule-bot on HBO.com is blank, the current press release regarding the slate lists nothing for that date, but could it be THE BATMAN?  It was leaked that that highly anticipated movie, the one with Robert Pattinson, was slotted for then and fans quickly noted it before it was gone. Speaking of a purge, there is no proof now that that date is a certainty. We will keep you apprised.

Movies Exclusive to HBO Max: Two movies are slated, exclusive to the streamer. Anyone up for checking out THE NIGHT HOUSE? Reeling from the unexpected death of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) is left alone in the lakeside home he built for her. She tries as best she can to keep it together — but then nightmares come. Disturbing visions of a presence in the house calling to her, beckoning her with a ghostly allure. Against the advice of her friends, she begins digging into her husband’s belongings, yearning for answers. What she finds are secrets both strange and disturbing — a mystery she’s determined to unravel. Movies_GensunPunch-300x127You’ve just got to be determined to watch it when it arrives FRIDAY, APRIL 08. The other title could fit here or with the international content. Slated for THURSDAY, APRIL 14 is GENSAN PUNCH. Filmed in both the Philippines and Japan this movie is inspired by a true story. it is about a Japanese man with a prosthetic leg who goes to the Philippines to train and pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. The so-called Gensan Quarter of General Santos City has long been known for producing athletes including the noted Manny Pacquiao. The film tackles the issue of discrimination towards the disabled, especially in competitive sports.

HBO Films Presentation: We haven’t seen a movie under this banner for quite a while. We look forward to HBO Films: THE SURVIVOR. It marks award-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson’s return to HBO. Based on the incredible true story of Harry Haft, the film reunites Levinson with award-winning actor Ben Foster. Foster stars in the title role as Haft who, after being sent to Auschwitz, survives not only the unspeakable horrors of the camp but the gladiatorial boxing spectacle he is forced to perform with his fellow prisoners for the amusement of his captors. Unbeknownst to those who try to destroy him, Haft’s will to survive is driven by his quest to reunite with the woman he loves. An examination of one man’s journey from unspeakable horrors to freedom, forgiveness and redemption, it debuts WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT, in honor of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

HBO Documentary Films: Our first work is something that slips in at the end of March that was not made known until now. So, we mention WHEN WE WERE BULLIES debuting WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30 (9:00-9:36pm ET). A mind-boggling coincidence prompts filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt to track down Docs_TheInvisiblePilothis fifth-grade class to see what they recall from a bullying incident that occurred 50 years ago. The result is this Oscar-nominated documentary short that looks back at this Brooklyn schoolyard incident and features found footage and interviews with classmates and even a teacher from that time. It must make for a good anti-bullying message to be nominated. Beginning MONDAY, APRIL 04 (9:00-9:55pm ET) is the 3-part docu-series THE INVISIBLE PILOT. It is a tale of a charismatic, daredevil husband and father who unexpectedly jumped off a bridge in 1977, despite a seemingly happy home life and a lucrative career as a pilot. His small-town Arkansas community searches for his body in vain while family and friends seek answers. Years later, a mysterious story emerges involving hypnosis, secret identities and a double life of dangerous missions and law-breaking. And that’s just the beginning…

It unfolds in three chapters, each one divulging new, shocking surprises for three subsequent Monday nights. The other title is TONY HAWK: UNTIL THE WHEELS FALL OFF. This is not an HBO Sports presentation, as you think it would be, but comes to us under the HBO Documentary Films banner, as that division has been showing far too many celebrity biographies as of late. Centering around intimate new interviews with Tony Hawk himself, the film is an all-encompassing look at the skateboarder’s life, legendary career, and relationship with the sport with which he’s been synonymous for decades. Hawk, a pioneer of modern vertical skating who is still pushing his limits at the age of 53, remains one of the most influential skateboarders of all time. Find it rolling in on TUESDAY, APRIL 05 (9:00-11:10pm ET). You can be sure that in the next week or so, another documentary title or two will show up for later in April, but that’s what we have for now.

HBO MAX Original Documentary Films: We start this category with Part II of a documentary series that already put out 3 installments in September of MaxDocs_TheWayDown2021. It is THE WAY DOWN: GOD, GREED, AND THE CULT OF GWEN SHAMBLIN. The final two episodes of the documentary series will be available to stream on THURSDAY, APRIL 28. After rising to fame with her Weigh Down Workshop, a Christian-based diet program, Gwen Shamblin Lara founded the Tennessee-based church. Despite a carefully curated image, Lara and the church soon fielded accusations of emotional, psychological, and physical abuse, and exploitation for their alleged cult-like practices. The work explores the legacy of Remnant’s infamous leader –whose life came to a shocking end after a plane crash in May 2021. Part two of the docuseries examines the mysterious circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash and investigation into the aftermath, including new stories from former survivors who felt compelled to share their experience following Shamblin’s death. Then there is NOT SO PRETTY. It uploads on THURSDAY, APRIL 14 and offers a four-episode half-hour investigative docuseries about the beauty industry, from Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s Jane Doe Films. It will bring awareness to the lurking dangers in the commodities we all use every day without question for makeup, skin-care, nails, and hair, marking the first-ever comprehensive large-scale investigative expose of the trillion-dollar cosmetics, beauty and personal care industry.

HBO Original Special: Not as far and few as HBO Films, but pretty darn close. To fix that, we have not just one but two comedy specials ahead of us. This time around we’ll start with JERROD CARMICHAEL: ROTHANIEL and we’ll take it. Jerrod Carmichael returns to HBO with his standup comedy special, debuting FRIDAY, APRIL 01 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. HBO will have an encore play on Saturday, April 02 at 10:15pm ET/PT. The special was taped in February before a live audience at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. This marks the third HBO standup comedy special for Carmichael. For some reason, we never covered his previous gigs, but we’ll get this one, no foolin’.

“And that’s my show, thank you very much.”

The other comes from no stranger at HBO as we all know Bill Maher. He offers up BILL MAHER: #ADULTING. It debuts FRIDAY, APRIL 15 at 10:00pm HBOSpecial_Maher12-300x171ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. Filmed at Miami’s Fillmore Theater, Bill Maher’s latest stand-up special sees the acclaimed comedian, host, and satirist take the stage for a hilarious and scathing hour of his signature commentary on the latest hot-button issues. Maher brings his no-holds-barred perspective to cancel culture, quarantine, Q-Anon… and everything in-between. Marking his twelfth HBO special since 1989, BILL MAHER: #ADULTING finds the Real Time… host back for his most brutally honest – and fearless – performance yet.

HBO Max Original Special: Max got a standup special also Marlon Wayans recently signed a deal with HBO Max and he got together a list of comedians he likes for a performance back on January 28 at the Belasco in LA. The gig was filmed in front of a healthy live audience and it was packaged up for the streamer. MARLON WAYANS PRESENTS: THE HEADLINERS uploads THURSDAY, APRIL 21 and features the comedic skills of Chaunte Wayans, DC Ervin, Esau McGraw, Sydney Castillo and Tony Baker. Okay, you might not know who they are now, but someday, who knows?

HBO Max Kids & Family: Stephen Fry, who famously narrated the UK Harry Potter audiobooks, will embark on a fantastical journey across the world in this upcoming BBC/HBO Max special, entitled FANTASTIC BEASTS: A NATURAL HISTORY coming to HBO Max on FRIDAY, APRIL 01. THE GARCIAS, HBO Max’s reboot of the hit Nickelodeon series The Brothers Garcia, arrives THURSDAY, APRIL 14. All six core cast members from the original series — Ada Maris (Sonia Garcia), Carlos Lacamara (Ray Garcia), Alvin Alvarez (Larry Garcia), Jeffrey Licon (Carlos Garcia), Bobby Gonzalez (George Garcia), Vaneza Pitynski (Lorena Garcia) — are set to reprise their roles in the reboot. Okay, I’ll admit I have no idea what the heck this is, but it is in the lineup, so there you go.

Max_DoDoHey kids, here comes DoDo and I’m not making that up. this animated series centers the everyday school life through the eyes of 11-year-old Joe Connolly as he navigates the pitfalls of his first year at high school. The smallest events mean big drama for Joe who is just trying to fit in. He may have lost his school trousers or sent a text message to the wrong girl, but with his friends Frisbo, Pete and Lily at his side he somehow triumphs over adversity and lives to see another school day. Wait, no one is named DoDo? The fun begins THURSDAY, APRIL 28. If that isn’t a silly enough name for you then how about LAMPUT? It is an animated series about a clever orange shape-shifting gooey thing, Lamput, that escapes from a hidden laboratory, thus sending scientists Slim Doc and Fat Doc in a frenzy as they try hard to capture him. However, Lamput always manages to escape. All three seasons from this Indian import drops on THURSDAY, APRIL 28. On SESAME STREET in April a five-episode on-location farm segment takes place as the Sesame Street gang learns all about how a farm works. Celebrity guest Keke Palmer leads the gang in a fun rendition of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” New episodes upload on THURSDAYS.

HBO Sports: Nothing new in sports, Gumbel, Costas and the recently added Jones have got the sports beat covered. BACK ON Sports_CostasInApril-300x184THE RECORD WITH BOB COSTAS will continue its second season with an all-new episode FRIDAY, APRIL 01 (11:00pm.-12:00am ET/PT). We know that his guest will be baseball aficionado Billy Crystal (and probably a good friend of Costas’) and eight-time MLB All-Star Max Scherzer. GAME THEORY WITH BOMANI JONES presents its fourth installment on SUNDAY, APRIL 03 (11:30pm-12:00am) and concludes on April 17. REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL debuts its latest edition TUESDAY, APRIL 19 (10:00-11:00pm), making it that show’s 300th installment.

HBO Latino: HBO’s Latino channel is good at dishing out short films like HBO did in its early days. Here are three interesting ones seen back-to-back when they debut on FRIDAY, APRIL 08 (8:00-8:45pm ET). First is the one with the great title, or so I think, CRABS IN A BARREL. In this 18-minute film, a jaded writer discovers that she has been robbed of her career-changing opportunity while attending her frenemy’s congratulatory event. Starring Ashley Alvarez, Jacqueline Guillen, Katherine O. George, Nate Betancourt. Directed by Michael Leon; written by Ashley Alvarez & Latino_CrabsInABarrel-300x300Michael Leon. Not sure how that title applies, though. Next is WHEN YOU CLEAN A STRANGER’S HOME. A first-generation high-school student describes what she and her mom learn about people when cleaning their homes for a living. House decor and items left around convey a privilege that unveils her imagination, jealousy, and frustrations. Starring Katy Atkinson and Sol Bautista. Written and directed by Sharon Arteaga. It does so in 7 minutes. To round them out is MI CASA at 14 minutes. 2021 Latinx Short Film Competition Winner. Two sisters have been trapped haunting their former home for over a century. When a new young man moves in and tries to communicate with them through an ouija board, the sisters are at odds on how to proceed. Starring Erika Miranda, Caitlin Hargraves, and Gregory Piccirilli. Directed by Kristina Arjona; written by Jocelyn Rick.

A week earlier, on FRIDAY APRIL 01 (8:00-9:45pm ET), is a new movie entitled RENDEZ-VOUS After meeting online, a couple decides to meet up for their first real-life date. What starts as a normal afternoon devolves into chaos when it’s discovered that one of them is not being honest about who they are in this one-shot, no-cut thriller written and directed by Pablo Olmos Arrayales and starring Antonio Alcantara and Helena Puig. There is also TOY AFICIAO. It is a movie about a  young man who studies at a prestigious university on a scholarship and an upper-middle-class girl who fall in love after they audition for a musical production at the school. Starring Jose Mota Prestol, Zamantha Diaz, Axel Mansilla, Francis Cruz. Directed by Jose Carlos Vargas; written by Eudys Cordero. Find it debuting FRIDAY, APRIL 22 (7:00-9:00pm ET). It starts an hour earlier to accommodate the Season Three premiere of A TINY AUDIENCE. That is the intimate performance showcase for Latino musical artists. The season kicks off with artists Becky G and Jay Wheeler in back-to-back episodes FRIDAY, APRIL 22 (9:00-10:15pm ET).

Max_Chad-300x185Other Movies & Shows: Hey, if for some reason the Caped Crusader is not appearing this month at least we can count on the CW’s BATWOMAN, Season Three uploading SATURDAY, APRIL 02. Also launching that same day is CHAD. Chad is about a “14-year-old pubescent Persian boy (Nasim Pedrad) as he navigates his first year of high school on a mission to become popular. Chad’s friendships and sanity are pushed to the limits as he uses every tactic at his disposal to befriend the cool kids, while enduring his mother’s new dating life and reconciling with his cultural identity. It hails from TBS. As for movies how about this lame title, BALLS OUT: GARY THE TENNIS COACH? Also, there is CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED, ERASED, KRULL (I remember watching that one in the 80s on HBO), ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, SEX DRIVE, SIC PUNK and THE WACKNESS. Okay, if they are not the cream of the crop then check out the entries like BELLS ARE RINGING, FIVE EASY PIECES, ON THE WATERFRONT, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, SHOWBOAT, THE ASPHALT JUNGLE and THE LAST DETAIL.

And you thought I was going to give you that BALLS OUT trailer, didn’t you? No, I just thought some people needed some kind of Bat-love.

Next Month’s Tease: We are about to see her play Louise in Branagh’s DEATH ON THE NILE on HBO but she takes on a series in May. Who is this actress and what is the series?

Last month’s answer – We asked you if the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Task Force was being chronicled in a movie, documentary or series? They are in the series WE OWN THIS CITY coming in April.

Final Clip: A double dose of comedy this time around.

A BLACK LADY SKETCH SHOW!

CLOSE ENOUGH!

Sadly, that is one of the biggest errors HBO has made. Everyone loved the schedule pages and yet they went away for what I call the “Schedule-bot”.

Man, I remember when the HBO Guide was mailed monthly. You are not the only one who misses that format and with the new company now HBO content and its scheduling will get buried even further.
