Movies: The theatrical movies are one short this month due to an original HBO Films’ presentation, but the movies in place on Saturday nights should appeal to most I think. What do you think of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE, WAR DOGS, SUICIDE SQUAD and VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN? I think that sets up as a pretty good combination as movies go nowadays. You got a bit of British snobbery, a comedic twist to a true story and uh…superheroes (?).

Best friends Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) are up to their old antics in the film adaptation of the hilarious British comedy series ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE, debuting SATURDAY, APRIL 01 (8:00pm). Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, June Whitfield, Chris Colfer, Kate Moss, Lulu, Emma Bunton, Robert Webb and Barry Humphries also star in the film, which was directed by Mandie Fletcher with a screenplay by Jennifer Saunders. But can you appreciate it without never seeing the series? Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star in the story of two friends who win a huge contract with the U.S. military to arm American allies in Afghanistan in WAR DOGS. Based on a true story, the comedy debuts SATURDAY, APRIL 8 (8:00pm). Jonah Hill, making good choices. A secret government agency recruits a team of jailed villains to save the world from apocalypse when SUICIDE SQUAD debuts SATURDAY, APRIL 15 (8:00 p.m.). Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Viola Davis star in this action-adventure, based on the DC Comics title. Some raved it some reviled it. How about you?

Also up with a debut on SATURDAY, APRIL 29 is VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN. It has a start time of 6:00pm to make way for the 2017 Rock & Roll gig in primetime. This time around the story of Frankenstein and his monster is brought to eye-popping new life in told from the perspective of the mad scientist’s hunch-backed assistant, Igor. Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy star.

HBO Films: The last Saturday is reserved for the latest HBO Films presentation. We reviewed the source material in preparation and now focus on the actual movie.

The HBO Films presentation THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS debuts SATURDAY, APRIL 22 (8:00-9:35pm). Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne star in this adaptation of Rebecca Skloot’s critically acclaimed, bestselling nonfiction book of the same name. The film tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman whose cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line. Told through the eyes of her daughter, Deborah Lacks (Winfrey), the film chronicles her search, with the help of journalist Rebecca Skloot (Byrne), to learn about the mother she never knew and understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Lacks’ cancerous cells in 1951 led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, changing countless lives and the face of medicine forever. George C. Wolfe directs from his screenplay; Oprah Winfrey, Alan Ball, Peter Macdissi, Carla Gardini and Lydia Dean Pilcher executive produce. A Your Face Goes Here Entertainment, Harpo Films and Cine Mosaic production.

Here is our first look at the Trailer. Look for our upcoming review.

HBO Documentary Films: March hit us strong, especially with CRIES FROM SYRIA, so we ease it up with just one documentary choice on the main channel in April.

Docs_AbortionStoriesWomenTell-200x300

Directed by Tracy Droz Tragos, ABORTION: STORIES WOMEN TELL presents a candid dialogue about one of the timeliest issues facing America today when the HBO documentary debuts MONDAY, APRIL 03 (8:00-9:30 p.m.). HBO Special:  Two music specials in one month! I told you it would be a Big month. At the last minute, HBO slipped this special on us. It is the second one from the artist. It is J. Cole: 4 Your Eyez Only. The Grammy-nominated hip-hop star’s special debuts SATURDAY, APRIL 15 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT). In the spirit of his previous outing, this exclusive presentation is a multi-narrative show that combines music performances with intimate interviews documented through Cole’s lens. Movies_TheWildLife-194x300Other Movies and Shows: If all that was not enough we dug a little deeper and found plenty. Just the First Run debuts alone are a healthy list. THE WILD LIFE starts it off on 04.01 at 7:25am. The story of castaway Robinson Crusoe is told from the point of view of the quirky animals on his new island world in this colorful animated romp. Bet you didn’t see that coming. Also, there is KICKS about a teen that embarks on a dangerous, life-changing odyssey into the tough streets of East Oakland to get back a pair of stolen sneakers; and HERBIE: FULLY LOADED starring Disney’s famed Volkswagen Beetle. Plus, you can find SEARCH PARTY.  After scaring off their best friend’s fiancée at the altar, two guys embark on a wild quest to reunite the erstwhile happy couple, taking them to Mexico and find INDIGNATION which is based on the best-selling novel by Philip Roth. It debuts MONDAY, April 17 at 8:00pm in place of a documentary.

Also to be found is HBO FIRST LOOK: FATE OF THE FURIOUS and a special about the concluding series GIRLS in A GOODBYE TO GIRLS. HBO2 is getting into the documentary debDocs_TheMemoryOfJustice-300x155uts with THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE on MONDAY, April 24 at 5:00pm. It is a remastered version of the 1976 documentary by Oscar-winner Marcel Ophüls and explores the relationship between individual and collective responsibility, as the filmmaker investigates then-recent alleged war crimes committed by France in Algeria and by the U.S. in Vietnam in light of atrocities committed by the Nazis. Deep, huh?

HBO’s Other Platforms: Something fun for everyone this spring. Here is what I found. HBO Latino: A few titles for you to investigate like LA COSA HUMANA (Human SavingMyTomorrow5-150x150Thing). No, it is not a Mexican Marvel movie. It is about a thief who gets caught in a tangled web when he steals a famous writer’s manuscript and claims it as his own. Also find Y MANANA NAVIDAD (Merry Christmas), a comic short film, LA GUNGUNA, the story of a small .22 caliber gun ties together several characters in the Caribbean underworld and the political thriller MAGALLANES. Also the series PSI returns on 04.14. Season 3 of this series finds the psychiatrist, psychologist, and psychoanalyst continuing his very interventionist style of analysis in more unusual cases–both in and out of the office. HBO Family: Yay, something new to offer. It is another installment of SAVING MY TOMORROW(pictured, right). It is a thirty minute documentary, the fifth in a series, with children actively saving their planet one step at a time. It debuts on 04.04 and runs again on Earth Day (04.22) with the other four in the series and concludes with a final debut at 7:00pm with SAVING MY TOMORROW: KIDS LOVE THE EARTH. Also, there is the movie STEEL and the animated show MOTHER GOOSE: A RAPPIN’ AMovies_PuertoRicansInParis-300x169ND RHYMIN’ SPECIAL. Oh, and MIGHTY MORHIN’ POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE. It is the 1995 kiddie one; probably featured because of the rebooted version on the big screen now. HBO Signature: New to this channel, or so they say, is CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. I wonder what it is about. It seems they find themselves in debt to a mobster after borrowing $400,000 after an insider trading tip that goes bad, four friends get in even deeper. Deeper into what, criminal activity? Michael Pitt of BOARDWALK EMPIRE stars. There is also the creative title of PUERTO RICANS IN PARIS (pictured, left) from 2015 with Luis Guzman of HBO’s OZ, JOHN FROM CINCINNATI and HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA. I also will throw in there MAMA MIA!, CROOKLYN and ROSEWOOD. HBO Comedy: Who about the classic 1970 movie MASH and the famed 4077th? Or have you heard of IMMIGRATION TANGO? Yeah, me either. In it a Russian immigrant and her Colombian boyfriend–both of whose visas are set to expire–concoct a plan to get green cards by ‘marrying’ their best friends. There is also SYDNEY WHTE in which a beautiful brunette is banished from a sorority to live with seven geeky guys in this fresh twist on the classic Snow White fairy tale and FOOL’S GOLD, BULLETPROOF and MEET DAVE. Okay, I’ll admit those last few were just random throw-ins. HBO Zone: Hey, I got to mention PRIMAL PLEASURE STATION before we go. That’s it, nothing else to say there. I’ll add RAT RACE from 2001 about an all-star cast on a mad dash for cash as they compete to win $2 million in a wild race. Wasn’t that THE CANNONBALL RUN with Burt Reynolds? And lastly the debut of DRAGON BLADE where Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Adrien Brody head up a battle-charged tale of an unlikely partnership between a Hun-Chinese commander and a Roman General in Central Asia in 48 BC. Yeah, let’s take a look at that one!
