For those that don’t know me, I am a notorious bookie in more ways than one, – I love my favorite books beyond a healthy obsession, I love talking about them endlessly, and I especially love anticipating their appearance on the small screen. While I know some elements must be changed or transformed for a television format in an adaption, I was born greedy. I. want. it. all. But if I can’t have it my way, doubtless, I will take to the internet to air my woes, stridently and often. So in advance of such disappointment, – oh, who are we kidding?? It’s Game of Thrones, it shan’t be disappointing in the least! – Here is my list of top moments from A Clash of Kings I cannot live without:

ourwiq5r8v6qb4tpsl9(And just to preface, I don’t expect everyone to agree with my selections. It is a vast narrative and a highly subjective one at that, but feel free to add yours below in the comments, and if you haven’t figured it out yet, *book spoilers ahead*)!

7. Jaquen’s Quirky Speech Pattern Plus Hot Tub Scene

For starters, it makes Jaquen Jaquen. How else does he capture our attention and fascination than that? Oh.. there’s Faceless reveal along with some mysterious deaths, but no doubt it is far less interesting if the Lorathi speaks like a common Westerosi. Also, hot tub scene.. Do I even have to explain this?

6. “… but not for the girls?”

Catelyn wanting her girls back is plainly her motive that runs the course of nearly everything in her story, and when Robb says he won’t trade Jaime for the girls.. well, it rips my freaking heart out. And of course it… complicates things. Do I think a little bit less of Robb for not giving up such a key bargaining chip in exchange for his sisters? I almost think I have to. But as it stands, even if this incident is not pleasant, it is necessary. It’s a good ache.

5. Dolorous Edd and Lots of Him

I strongly suspect Dolorous will be appearing true to form alongside his dour dung jokes, random tangents, and incessant complaining, but I am most especially holding out hope for his comparison of his childhood home to Craster’s Keep. “Those were my enchanted years. Later I fell on hard times.” … Forget the Wildlings, Craster, the Old Bear, just make it the Dolorous Edd Hour and be done with it.

4. Brienne, Anything and Everything Brienne.

Brienne defeating Loras, Brienne fussing over Renly, Brienne talking about her father’s “ladies” to Catelyn, Brienne swearing herself over, -every single ounce of Brienne, I need it all. I even suspect we’ll be getting more of her story from A Storm of Swords, but let’s just say I won’t be pleased if they skimp the edges or round any corners when it comes to the Maid of Tarth. Brieeeeeeennne.

gameofthronetag-300x1643. Sandor vs. Tyrion

Much like Ned and Jaime squaring off in order to bring the male element to the fore last year, Tyrion and Sandor are bound to face off at critical junctures for our entertainment purposes this year. Indeed, the crest of the season should be Tyrion’s rise at Sandor’s reputation and expense in the Battle of the Blackwater Rush sequence. And let’s admit it, their rivalvry is a lot of fun, as both boys lack and subsequently resent something the other has, ie Tyrion’s political clout and Sandor’s physical prowess. But let it be noted, I shall not be satisfied if they don’t get at least three interactions total on the season. Let the macho machinations begin already!

2. “Winterfell! Winterfell!” while Hot Pie screamed “Hot Pie!”

Hot Pie’s moment of glory while assisting Arya by hacking at the scrawny man’s neck, we shall not be denied! It must be kept in for various reasons, tops being Hot Pie is savagely adorable and it marks a turn in his friendship with Arya Arry. But beyond that, it is a sad socio-economic truth that at least Arya still has an idea of home to rally behind, whereas Hot Pie just has his silly moniker. It slays me! Hot Pie!

Sansa-Stark-Winterfell-Game-of-Thrones-Season-21. Sansa in the Sept of Baelor

This passage may not even be Martin’s best writing, but it gets to me every. single. time. I sob mercilessly, and yeah, I’ll admit it is my favorite Sansa chapter of all time and definitely my favorite chapter in ACOK. It is her prayers for Sandor and Tyrion, one of the few times she can be herself while guised in the anonymity of the general public as she sings the hymn, and then her desperation to not be part of the blessing for Joffrey. I pray to the Mother they keep it in, or there shall be Seven Hells to pay. Seriously, they should fear my wrath.

Well, I’ve shared mine, so now it is your turn. What parts of the second book in Geore R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series can you not live without next season on Game of Thrones? Sound off below!

Great list.

My number 1 is your number 2. I laughed so hard when I read that. It’s refreshing to have some humor among all of the horror that inhabits Westeros.

One of my favourite characters is Ramsay Bolton. Say what you will about him but he is a well written character. I’m a little concerned they didn’t cast a Reek for this season which may mean they are pushing it into the 3rd season.
I’m not sure how they are going to pull off some of the climactic moments at Winterfell without Reek.

Also, dragons.

Oh I like Ramsey as a character too, .. I mean, he’s so much fun (in a very bad way of course) to detest and pick apart.

They seem to be leaving out a lot of the action that is at Winterfell in ACOK, though I don’t know, maybe they’ll surprise us. :)

I read the first four books in such a flurry that they sort of blended together… anyway… I agree with all of it! The “house” in Q city is a must for the future foretelling if nothing else. A certain colored wedding and the whole wildling experience (I think they were in ACOK, maybe ASOS though)

Brienne of course she is one of the women I love in the books & yes how can we forget the 3 little Dragons of Daenerys. Who does not love Dragons & Dragon babies are way cutier. Also for Stannis, he is one character to watch out for! Cannot wait for Season 2!!!

Great list Serena – an excellent beginning post :)

I’d just like to add that I am just totally jonesin’ for a RHAEGAR vision in that certain House. Please, pretty please, GOT. I think it’s imperative to actually show him (and soon) rather than just mentioning him briefly in passing. He was the Targ with the Mostest, and his death was the catalyst for so many of the bubbling troubles of Westeros.

Oh, and I can’t wait to see Cersei in her cups either

Great post Serena! And yes, I joined just so I could tell you that. I always enjoy reading your posts because they have that perfect combination of intelligence, insight, humor and fangirling. One day soon I’ll drag my head out of certain other book series *ahem* and carry on with the GOT you got me interested in last summer. So far, my favorite character is Tyrion – although I’m half afraid to root for any one character, with the body count I know is coming. From your “subtle” hints, I realize Jaimie or Sandor will probably bump Tyrion off the top of the heap eventually. Anyway, congrats girl! Keep up the good work!

Great article! I have to say.. I WANT IT ALL! Why couldn’t HBO extend the show to 12 episodes per season? Serena.. can you next article be a petition asking for 12 episodes instead of 10? hehe.. anyway.. thanks for writing this was brilliant!

Glad you liked it. :) Ha! I’ll write on whatever you want.. mostly. lol. But I ask myself that question all the time too! I’m aware of the official party line that they need to keep everything manageable between budget and writing staff but I don’t really buy into it. Yet so long as the quality remains high I won’t get too upset about it I guess.

Terrific list, Serena. Like you, I am a self-proclaimed bookie and when it comes to adaptations, I want it all too. However, I will be satisfied as long as the general story lines are followed and the characters in the show stay true to the characters in the books. A fan fiction can have OOCness; an adaptation from book to screen should not.

Anyways, love your list and agree with pretty much everything, especially numbers 2 and 5. I’m just looking forward to seeing all of Arya’s stuff, and getting to see the rest of my favorites (Jon, Tyrion, Robb, etc.) again.

Looking forward to more of your great articles!

I also really hope we get Sansa & Cersei with all the ladies during the battle…with Ilyn Payne there and Cersei’s explanation that he is there for THEM!

Yeah, I definitely want Drunk Cersei too, she’s a riot.

Agree with your list Serena! Bravo and well done!

#6 – did make me ache. Oh Robb! *sigh* It hurts, but I get it.
I don’t like it, but I get it.

#4 – Anything and EVERYTHING Brienne – oh yes please!

#1- Sansa in the Sept of Baelor. * Cries * – THIS IS A MUST!
I don’t think I could live without this inclusion. One of my fave chapters ever. RAW.

Thanks Serena! Looking forward to your next installment :)

Roll on April! I’m soooo ready!

Totally agree about most everything you stated especially more Brienne but I think you let out some glaring omissions.

The first would be a certain house that the Khaleesi visits. I must see everything the book describes. I can’t go into it without spoilers.

Also Shadow Babies.

Lol. The Shadow Babies nearly made it in as well as the HotU, but I had to cut it off somewhere… And so I went with what I found to be the more emotionally compelling rather than the scary & highly visual. ;)

I want to see the Khaleesi ‘visit’ as well!! The more Dany the better in my mind!! :)

And of course, ALL THINGS BRIENNE… ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

Yes to everything you said! For me, there are 2 things I definitely need in S2: Brienne and more Jaime. :)
