We’ve been covering HBO’s planned adaptation of Micheal Crichton’s Westworld for almost a year now. But now we can report that the show has finally begun casting and will hopefully start shooting this summer. During a Q&A session at the TCA press tour HBO’s president of programming, Michael Lombardo said this:

“Hope we’re going to start shooting this summer. We’re casting right now, and I assume, you know, announcements will come out when those deals happen. Obviously, it takes place within some time in the unspecified future within an amusement park populated by robots. Beyond that, I think it’s its own thing, and Jonah and Lisa [Joy] have done it and the script is one of the more exciting scripts we’ve read in a very, very long time.”

Wow. The most exciting script in a long, long time? Coming from HBO, that’s saying something. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept Westworld was a movie in the 70’s about a theme park in the future manned by robots / AI.  Now J.J Abrams’ production company and director Johnathan Nolan will give their modernized version of Westworld a go on HBO’s dime.  It’s been described as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.”  Sound awesome?  We know.

Here’s the trailer for the old movie.. but don’t judge just yet!  Think Battlestar Galactica Old vs. New.  Completely different, right?  HBO’s president said in the same interview mentioned above that the show will be “its own thing.”

Do any acting names come to mind when you think of WESTWORLD? Who do you want to see in this thing?

I personally am intrigued by this concept. I saw the movie long ago and just recently added the DVD to my Netflix queue. The novel should be out there as well. This type of show is HBO thinking outside the box.

I know exactly nothing about this project, but the sci-fi feel of it has me intrigued. I’m a massive fan of the BSG remake (at least until it shit the bed in Season 4), so this kind of a show coming to HBO is promising!
