Those who subscribe to HBO Max can watch HBO’s vast library of quality content. What About HBO Now & HBO Go?

HBONowHBOGo-300x174Up until the summer of 2020, the apps HBO Now and Go both offered access to HBO’s library of TV series, movies, and documentaries.

After the debut of HBO’s comprehensive new streaming service, HBO Max, HBO retired the HBO Go app. Those who wish to stream HBO’s library of content online without gaining access to the diverse offerings available through HBO Max can still subscribe to HBO Now under its new name— HBO. This app can be installed on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

With the HBO or HBO Max apps, anyone, anywhere can access streams of  Watchmen, True Blood, The Plot Against America, True Detective, Girls, HBO Docs, the GOT prequel, House of the Dragon, and all of HBO’s other hit series. A subscription is only $15 per month.

Older HBO Shows are Streaming on Amazon Prime

If you’re an Amazon Prime member and you’re trying to watch an older HBO show like The Sopranos or Sex and the City stop what you’re doing and head over there now because older HBO shows stream free with a Prime subscription. You get a free month when you sign up so there’s really no excuse not to when you factor in the free shipping on Amazon stuff as well as the large streaming video library. Give it a try.

Other Ways to Live Stream HBO Content

“Free,” pirated streams of HBO shows and films are unauthorized and usually low resolution. They are more likely to get you in legal trouble or infect your computer with viruses than actually allow you to enjoy the show that you are trying to watch.

You don’t want to experience Game of Thrones or Boardwalk Empire on an unofficial, non-HD streaming site surrounded by crazy, russian-bride ads do you? What about John OliverReal Time with Bill Maher, Animals or Vice? You don’t want to taint that experience.

Give one of the legal, legit methods above a try instead of pirating HBO’s content.

I just watched a show about the social divide in New York City. The time was 11 Am on the 27 of 07, 21. Can someone tell me where I can find this program? I missed part of it and I did not get the name. I just found what I saw very interesting hearing what some young people living there had to say. It was about the rich and the not-so-rich. And I would like to see the whole thing again.

Jef Dinsmore July 27, 2021 - 1:52 pm

Sorry based on what you’ve given us we cannot figure it out. One, by the way you wrote the date you are European? We do not have a listing for UK or European HBO schedules. On the U. S. schedule for that date and time (or even for allowing for a time difference) we see nothing that corresponds with what you seek.

the video quality of game of thrones is awful. You can’t get a steady stream on the 1st airing so either your picture freezes every several seconds or you have to wait 1 hour. Bill Maher is still not on several hours after it aired. $15 per month isn’t worth it. You can find it free online after shows air and the quality may even be better.

Zubair Hussain Khan May 28, 2017 - 10:33 pm

I personally prefer VPN to watch Blocked content.

BruceMajors4DC April 16, 2017 - 6:08 pm

HBO makes it so fucking complicated to watch online even when you have a cable subscription. Such a crapulent corporation.

Jef Dinsmore April 20, 2017 - 7:56 pm

Jeesh. I never have any problem with HBOGo.

Clarice A Klepadlo September 28, 2021 - 9:10 am

Neither did we. subscribed to it for decades. As of September 14- when Amazon dropped our subscription- No more Live streams from the app, unless your streaming provider supports HBOMAX. No Amazon, No Roku- our options. Since my only requirement is John Oliver (ok maybe Bill Maher sometimes) it’s not worth going through my cable/internet provider- Spectrum/Charter- (they are raping us as it is). I advise EVERYONE to be aware of this. I found out Sunday Night at Last Week Tonight time. I’m deciding what to do. Keep it and watch the next day, or save 15.00 each month and watch whatever highlights I can on other people’s shows. He is SO damn smart, good , and self deprecating!

Ken December 8, 2016 - 5:35 pm

Holy shit I want one option or two options this HBO GO HBO NOW shit is maddening and stupid. Let’s think of closely related ambiguous names…. GO – oh okay that’s a good one. NOW… Even better. Lol wtf.

“Full TV shows and movies are available to download right to your personal computing device at no additional cost to HBO cable subscribers!” How is that free? How the fuck is that free, douchebags? Read your headline again, then fuck off.

Zotta July 10, 2016 - 5:31 am

I mean we wanted to see it via Bill Maher and one or both of us has to be away. Oh well.

Zotta July 10, 2016 - 5:30 am

I don’t think it’s gonna work to bring an XBox to our overnight hotel to watch the first night of the GOP convention. We are screwed on that one. XBox to stream? Why?

Ashley Watson July 5, 2016 - 3:29 pm

If you have an hbo go can you use the same log in to use hbo now?

nancypo June 25, 2016 - 9:05 am

I have a brand new Roku stick and after multiple tries, calls to Roku, troubleshooting, HBO NOW WILL STILL NOT STREAM CORRECTLY. I was wanting to do the 1 month free and then subscribe but it’s not working. You guys should fix this glitch!!! Very disappointed and angry. I have excellent internet and EVERYTHING ELSE STREAMS FINE. Not my problem. I did all the troubleshooting on both their website multiples times. I do tech support ans this is a poor product and poor customer service. I will just rent the DVDs, very reliable.

eric June 6, 2016 - 7:26 pm

i live in canada and have an hbo subscription i am using a windows 10 pc how do i stream game of thrones

Eleonora Iafano June 7, 2016 - 7:55 pm

I honestly don’t know how to answer that question. I don’t think you can stream Game of Thrones? All I know is you can either purchase the seasons in their entirety on DVDs or subscribe to HBO Go. But I do not have the information you require. Sorry about that.

jtxl August 18, 2017 - 11:10 pm

if you mean on hbo now, on your device or smart tv, there will be a tile to click on to take you to the shows. If your tv is wi fi enabled, you can go through the website on your computer and windows 10 lets you use wi fi to send a duplicate screen to the tv. I am using the free month and am disappointed though that the video quality is low. You can find it free online. you can’t get a steady stream watching on the 1st airing and 2 weeks in a row, it is hours after bill maher aired and it still is not posting on hbo now. Try the free month from the website and see if it can work for you.

Brian Rewis May 15, 2016 - 5:59 pm

I signed up for HBO Now, but I am more than a little disappointed that you cannot watch GOT live.

DawnMarie May 2, 2016 - 4:47 pm

How about either make a damn Playstation app for hbo now or make it interchangeable with Go because I’m sick and tired of paying for a service i can only use in one room

John Console April 24, 2016 - 4:47 pm

Cracks me up with so many people who are complaining about a streaming service when the problem is with their shitty internet connection.

Jeff Friedlander April 25, 2016 - 7:34 pm

I would have to disagree. A lot of low ratings on amazon.com. 2000+ reviews and more than half of them are 1-2 stars for HBO Now because of internet issues. I couldn’t even figure out how to install it because its so poorly organized. I want to watch it on my xbox but it keeps trying to download to my phone. That is kind of counterintuitive since I first applied for it on my xbox and am not provided with the option to install from there. I havent personally tried the service but based on the prevailing opinion and my poor experience with HBO NOw installation, I prefer to add it to my cable subscription. It only costs a little more but is much less of a hassle.

Pasha March 21, 2016 - 9:43 am

I contacted their customer service because their streaming constantly was buffering and pixelated. I had mentioned that I read their suggested article on trouble shooting and found it to be unhelpful, because I have never had a problem with streaming amazon video or netflix in the same high definition qualities. I received a response in the form of the same article that I articulated was not helpful. Extremely disappointed in their poor streaming service and even poorer customer service. There are plenty of “free” streaming sites that have their content, and I am happy to no longer financially support a business that is this incompetent.

smann004 January 25, 2016 - 7:47 am

On Surface with windows 8.1 you will need to use a browser other than IE. It appears as though there is an issue that prevents logging in. Try Firefox or chrome. Even with Firefox video stops several times per minute to buffer. HBO needs to create a dedicated Windows App. or stop using Adobe Flash.

Johndoe October 31, 2015 - 9:20 pm

So why wasn’t my question approved here? Seriously…

Please elaborate as it sounds like you’re speaking robot.

Ben the Cable Guy August 29, 2015 - 8:11 am

For the past few days, I haven’t been able to log onto HBO Go. When I sign in with my Time Warner account, it takes me back to the HBO Go page without logging me in. The android app works fine for me, it’s just the website that won’t work for me (Other network websites work fine).

I’ve contacted Time Warner about it and they told me to contact HBO, I contacted HBO and they have yet to give me a response; does anyone know what is going on?

marksf August 18, 2015 - 2:35 pm

I am signed up for HBO Now, and I think it’s awesome HBO is moving in this direction. However, even as a member of HBO Now, torrenting may still still be preferable, due to unreliable internet connection speed, and not being able to watch offline (while commuting on subway, etc).

I hope HBO, Netflix, etc. wake up to the fact that “streaming” services are not such a great idea because of these issues, and they really need to offer pre-downloads for offline viewing.

Leigh Higg August 13, 2015 - 11:29 pm

I have a VIZIO smart tv and cannot get HBO GO. I looked and read something that VIZIO said it was something their end and they are working on creating an app for it to work. Can anyone help me out? I am hearing about all these great shows but cannot watch b/c of my TV. please help :)

thank you,
Leigh Anne

Ben the Cable Guy August 14, 2015 - 8:34 am

I can’t tell you when the app will come out but in the meantime, you could probably get a Chromecast from Walmart or Amazon quite cheaply and cast it onto your TV from there, then just sell it when the app does come out.

Ben the Cable Guy August 11, 2015 - 7:05 am

For anyone who can’t get HBO Now as they don’t have a compatible device, try downloading Bluestacks (Android emulator) and sign up through there

Corrina August 8, 2015 - 10:37 am

My hbo go app on my android only has a few show available to watch. How do i view all from my phone?

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 3:03 pm

Have you tried reinstalling the app?

Corrina August 9, 2015 - 11:11 am

Yes, it does not give me the option to view multiple shows, only top 6 or 7 that HBO is featuring. I even went online and added my shows to the watch lish and still showing up on my android

foxmolder August 5, 2015 - 7:17 am

I’m so so confused. Can someone please let me know if I can use HBO GO on my Windows 7 laptop without using another device in the process? I’ve searched Google and everything that pops up is outdated and no longer useful information.

Alternatively, if I have access to a Kindle (not a new one) can I sign up using it and then stream on my laptop, without having to use the Kindle anymore?

I feel like HBO really fumbled this. I literally cannot find out, anywhere on the HBOGO site let alone the entire rest of the internet, if it’s possible to purchase and stream HBO GO from a laptop or PC. It’s a bit of a problem for interested would-be customers.

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 3:01 pm

All you need to do is log in through your cable provider, unless you’re talking about HBO Now which you have to purchase through Apple or Android which is pretty stupid of HBO in my opinion.

foxmolder August 10, 2015 - 6:00 am

Yeah I meant Now, not Go. HBO sucks at this. Evidently it’s because instead of providing NOW themselves, HBO is using this absurd outside-provider model, and I guess no provider has decided it’s worthwhile to let people sign-up unless they get to sell them (or have already recently sold them) an overpriced smart-phone or e-reader or some other piece of ‘smart’ technology in the process. Amazon is offering the service now, but, of course, you need a Kindle.

Jeff Friedlander April 25, 2016 - 7:37 pm

Thanks for clarifying. I have the same problem. I just want to watch Game of THrones on my xbox one. HBO Now bait and switched me for a chunk of my free time. They suck.

John Christen July 18, 2015 - 9:58 pm

If you subscribe to this can you use it on anything or only the item you subscribed to it with?

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 10:46 am

You can use it on any compatible device from what I know.

foxmolder August 10, 2015 - 6:05 am

HBO NOW will run on anything. The subscription process is basically just a pay-wall used by the various providers (Apple, Amazon, Verizon ect). I’ve read that after you sign-up you can watch it on any PC/Laptop, but I wouldn’t count on not having to return back to your subscribed device for some absurd update or renewal process or some other nonsense.

Hiro August 19, 2015 - 9:22 pm

I have a data cap of 300gb through Comcast. If I log in on a device outside my home using a separate internet connection, will it still use my data (since I logged in through my account)?

Hannah Beeb July 16, 2015 - 4:24 pm

I have a Samsung Smart TV. I was able to sync my Ipad to Samsung Smart TV until March 2015. After the Samsung update in late March 2015, I cannot sync my ipad (Apple Device) to Samsung Smart TV. I called customer service support & was told that Samsung Smart TV does not support any Apple device. I think Apple sued & won a lawsuit against Samsung in early 2015? The Samsung customer service Rep said that the Samsung Smart TV does not support HBO NOW. The Samsung Smart TV March 2015 update adversely impacted my ability to connect to Amazon Prime Subscription & Netflix. I was unaware of the Samsung Smart TV UpDate until I called Samsung customer support. It took me several phone calls & a couple of hours to reformat my Samsung Smart TV in order to get adequate internet connection. I wish I had purchased a different brand of Smart TV. Not happy with Samsung.

Never mind, I worked it out.

Apparently you have to make an account on HBO Go and link it to your cable account, now I shall let the binge watching of GoT begin!

Randal Kottwitz June 15, 2015 - 11:59 am

I subscribe to HBO through Glenwood Communications in southern Nebraska. It’s aggravating enough that I pay so much money for standard definition on a premium digital fiber optic cable system, but now, just to add insult to injury, I’ve found out that I can’t get HBO GO because Glenwood doesn’t support it. So much for HBO’s claim that HBO GO is free with your cable subscription to HBO. Obviously, some exceptions apply. I wanted to show my family Angels In America last night, and after a lot of introduction and getting everyone excited, I found out we can’t get HBO GO here in the hinterlands when I hit the “Play” button on my AppleTV. I’m a VERY unhappy camper.

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 2:53 pm

Sony have announced that HBO Now will be available for Playstations later on in the year. In the meantime, why not consider Sling TV? It’s the same as HBO Go/Now but with the live HBO channel too.

Msity March 28, 2016 - 6:17 pm

That would be great but sling isn’t available for PS 3 or 4!?!!

Sharon May 27, 2015 - 12:23 pm

Can you get this on the regular Wii console?? When I google it up there’s a page that says yes but here it says no for Wii U and I just have the plain one…

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 2:49 pm

Hi Sharon,

Lisa May 26, 2015 - 1:23 pm

I have Charter Cable for Internet and Amazon Prime; and through Charter, I have HBO. When you go to activate HBO for prime it doesn’t list Charter as a provider. I call Charter, they said it is listed even though it’s not and they say to call HBO which is quite impossible since I can find no number for HBOtogo. HORRIBLE customer support!

Jef Dinsmore May 26, 2015 - 3:14 pm

I don’t know what the confusion is about. Charter is listed in the pull down menu of providers. It is the sixth one listed in the C’s in the list.

You must first have a logon in account with Charter before HBOGo can recognize you as a Charter subscriber.

Ben the Cable Guy August 8, 2015 - 1:37 pm

Thank me later

Paying for Wifi on a flight is a pain – is there a way I can watch a show off of HBO Go without Wifi?

Jacob Klein May 16, 2015 - 9:13 am

This is a really great suggestion but I don’t think any HBO product supports it right now. The only thing you could really do is cough up the 5-10$ for a few episodes on Amazon or iTunes and download them.

Wish they’d have a “Save for Offline” feature like Spotify but it is much harder to do with 2GB movies and such.

Jeba Ti July 27, 2015 - 8:07 pm

Download the shows you want from your computer then transfer the shows to your phone. That way you do not use any data and still get your enjoyment while your going anywhere. I have a Samsung Galaxy 5S mini and I just put my movies on there and I have no issues. Hopefully this helps?

Holly May 8, 2015 - 5:34 pm

The hbo go website is BLANK.
I have Uverse AT&T — how do I sign into HBO GO?

Jef Dinsmore May 8, 2015 - 6:31 pm

I don’t know about you, but the Internet in my neck of the woods is very sluggish this evening. It took an effort for HBOGo to completely load for me, but it did. I even selected your provider link and got it to come up also.

If all sites for you are slow than maybe atmospheric issues are to blame tonight. Try it again.

Ben the Wicked Fly Cable Guy August 11, 2015 - 7:12 am

1. Go to the HBO Go website
2. Click on Sign in
3. Find AT&T Uverse in the list of providers
4. Sign in with your AT&T Uverse account credentials
5. Providing that you’re subscribed to HBO on AT&T Uverse (Which to my understanding is the U450 package), the HBO Go site will load and you will be able to watch your favorite HBO series online at no extra cost
