As we’ve noted, several HBO/Max shows have garnered Emmy nominations. One lucky nominee is the Max show HACKS with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. Also, as is par for the course, interviews abound upon receiving said nominations. But, instead of just talking about the honor of being nominated and gushing over how well the cast & crew worked at their craft, a few tidbits about what might lie ahead for the acclaimed series are also mentioned. So, as HACKS’ third season gets the praise what did Smart & Einbinder say about Season Four? We find quotes on the matter via a Deadline interview. To start, it turns out that both of them have an ideal guest that they’d love to see make an appearance in the next season. It certainly wouldn’t be unheard of for a celebrity to pop on-camera in this show as a character or as themselves. HACKS has already seen the likes of Anna Maria Horsford, Linda Purl, Ming-Na Wen, Laurie Metcalf, Wayne Newton, Margaret Cho, Susie Essman, George Wallace, Carrot Top, Helen Hunt, Christopher Lloyd, Hal Linden and Deidre Hall just to name a few.
But the big get they hope for….is Elton John! Yes, you read that right. In an interview, Smart stated, “I would think I’d died and gone to heaven if he came on the show. I mean, we’ve gotten to use two of his songs on the show. Season 2, “The Bitch is Back” was perfect, and then this [season] was, “I’m Still Standing”, which was perfect. And so I think that he likes the show, so maybe we could write an incredible part for him that would be awesome. I have this funny feeling about him, I don’t know why. Every once in a while I’ll see somebody, or I’ll be a fan of someone, and I just think that if I met that person, we’d be friends. And that’s how I’ve always felt about him. Always. I don’t know why. I have nothing to base that on.”
Hmm? How could they fit in the Rocket Man and perhaps “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” or Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me”?
As for specific tidbits about the next season, only generalities could be given, but we’ll take them. In the show, Deborah (Smart) and her comedy writing protege Ava (Einbinder) left off Season 3 with a head-to-head conflict over who would be Deborah’s head writer on her new show. “It was really great to get to see Ava break some of those patterns she’s fallen into with Jean,” Einbinder said. And we can expect that powerful turn to continue, as showrunner Jen Satsky added, “Certainly, you will see all of what Hannah has shown before and even more going forward.”
“We’re full steam ahead on Season 4,” Statsky said, “and just trying to focus on that and write that. So we are taking a moment to celebrate today, but also getting back from the writers’ room in an hour.”
We look forward to seeing how many Emmys they snatch up and to Season 4 in 2025.
