TrueDetective02_logo-300x65In the official season two trailer of True Detective, we are introduced to four characters: one villain and what appear to be three good guys. Perhaps still waters run deep. We only see the tip of the iceberg in this trailer, leading us to believe that there’s a lot more to these characters than meets the eye. Each of them has a history, a backstory. Perhaps there’s something in the past that they all want to keep there. Sometimes, the sins of the past tend to catch up with you sooner or later. Let the countdown to the premiere begin!

“Sometimes your best self…..is your worst self.”

Vince Vaughn portrays Frank Seymon, who appears to be a powerful businessman, with money and lots of people in his social circle. He plays up to the hype: dark sunglasses, tailored suits and a cool, confident poker face – esTrueDetective_Seymon-300x200pecially when he is sitting right across from Detective Ray Velcoro. Frank looks like a successful businessman, who gives the air of confidence, success and ambition. What is Frank hiding behind all of his legitimate business ventures? Who knows how he came to be in such a powerful position and how many people have had to pay because of their dealings with him? What exactly is his connection to Ray? Is there a history between the two and if so, will Frank ultimately use that for his own gain? Who is he walking around with in the trailer and what business does Frank have in what looks to be a motel courtyard? Watching him throw down the lit match and watch a fire burn in front of him, well you just know that he’s trying to get rid of some evidence that could prove costly. It’ll be very interesting to see what Frank Seymon means, when he refers to your ‘best’ and ‘worst’ self.

“My strong suspicion is, we get the world we deserve.”

TueDetective_Velcoro-300x200Colin Farrell portrays Ray Velcoro, a detective with some sort of ties to the mob. Looking at Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Ray in the trailer, he looks grim and desolate, as if he is harboring a secret or two. Why is he so forceful? What’s with the brass knuckles? Who is he out to get and what exactly has he gotten himself into? Why is he sitting across from the villain, looking as if he’s almost about to cry? Ray Velcoro looks like a man who is tormented by some past decisions or actions that have cost him physically or emotionally. Looking at his bloodied hands, you just know this isn’t the first time he’s resorted to using old school violence as a means of keeping someone in their place. His face is intense and brooding. He is a man with mixed emotions. He looks like he’s about to be forced to choose between doing the right thing or doing the thing that’s right for him. The lines between the law and the lawless become blurred.

This isn’t me. I’m not doing this.”

Taylor Kitsch portrays police officer Paul Woodrugh. Watching him in the trailer, he looks piercing one moment and woundedTrueDetective_Woodrugh-300x200 the next. He clearly looks troubled and agitated; what happened to him before he became a police officer in the motorcycle division? In previous articles from HBO Watch, it states that Paul is also a war veteran. What war did he fight in? (I’m thinking over the Middle East) What does he mean when he says, “This isn’t me. I’m not doing this” – is he trying to desperately to clear himself of any wrong doing? Who is the woman he is seen kissing and embracing? Does he have some unresolved issues from his time as a war veteran? In one scene he looks as though he has been burned or scarred on the side of his body and chest. How did that happen to him? More importantly, why?

“This girl’s gone missing. Nobody cares. The interior’s poisoned and suddenly worth billions. Nobody cares.”

Rachel McAdams portrays Ani Bezzerides, a detective who seems to be on the straight and narrow path, which may end up causing conflict with her colleagues. The look of anguish and frustration on her face says it all. She’s not happy with the way TrueDetective_Bezzerides-300x200things are handled; she wants to fight for the underdog and wants to see justice served. She looks like the one character that is actually lawfully good: she does the right thing, does not allow herself to be compromised and does not fall prey to anything seedy or immoral. She looks irate – especially when repeatedly stabbing that wooden block. One could assume that she may have some unresolved anger issues of her own – especially if she can’t be corrupted by anyone on the force and the constant corruption may be taking its’ toll. I wonder what it’s like to be a female detective in a very male dominated field. Does she come across intimidation and fear at the hands of our villain and his cronies? Does she stand up for what’s right, even if it makes her the least popular person on the force? What’s her back story and what prompted her to take up a career in law enforcement? Will she become romantically involved with either Ray or Paul?

True Detective Trailer – “Chaos”

“Am I supposed to solve this or what?”

Detective Ray Velcoro casually poses this question to fellow law enforcement agent Ani B. Well, you ARE a detective, Ray. So, the answer is yes. Why is he posing that question? Is there something preventing him from wanting to take on the case? A conflict of interest, perhaps, that he doesn’t want anyone to find out about? Why do we see clips of Ray, clean shaven, walking through what appears to be a motel courtyard? Who is he meeting? What is his connection to Ray and how does this affect his ability to uphold the law? How will his connection to a known mobster affect his ability to work within the confines of the law? Why does Ani give him such an intense stare down? And what exactly does Ray mean when he “welcomes judgement?”

“I’m no good on the sidelines.”

Paul says this statement as a personal lament. Does that mean Paul prefers to be right in the thick of things? Where all the action is? Does this kind of behavior interfere with his personal or professional life? What happened to him that makes him believe being on the sidelines is a crummy place to be? Who is the woman he is seen kissing in the trailer? Why does he look so angry all the time? What events bring Ray and Paul together? Is Paul corrupt? Has he ever done something to compromise his professional integrity?

“Tell me, how compromised are you?”

This is the question being asked by Ani. Being in law enforcement means that you are supposed to do everything in your power to keep the peace and monitor the law. Meaning, you have to walk a fine line and practice what you preach; you can’t be in law enforcement and uphold society to one standard and then turn around and twist or break laws to suit your own needs. My take is that Ani has been constantly surrounded, coerced and perhaps even harassed by police officers or detectives who don’t always practice what they preach. It’s a tough call – do you rat out your colleagues in order to uphold the law and see justice prevail? Or do you shut your mouth and turn a blind eye? We know both situations can be incredibly difficultTrueDetective_RayandAni-300x200

This first clip showcases brief glimpses of the four main characters. We know that one of them is a career criminal who is desperately trying to go legit. The other three are in law enforcement, each with their own shady or secret past. I look at these characters and my gut instinct is that there is a fine line between abiding by the law and trying to push it to the limit. It also looks fairly dark; there’s a lot of grimacing; people look uncertain about what to do and how this will bode for our police folks in question. As well, we keep seeing the repeated imagery of highways. Lots of cars and trucks passing by, day in, day out. We only see the surface of what’s happening. This trailer wants us to dig deeper into the character’s psyches and try to understand how events in their past will have a profound influence on each of their futures.

True Detective Trailer – “Stand”

After watching this clip a few times, my overall feeling is that I am afraid of the dark. Creator/writer Nic Pizzolatto likes to show us the underbelly of society; the things we don’t see under the harsh light of day. He also likes to show us the inner soul and not just the person on the outside. He will surely prove, I think, that even though you make a stand for what you believe is right and just it doesn’t exempt you from the darkness around you or potentially within you.

We conclude with details from a Press Release –

Found the season premiere to be very grim and dark. I actually enjoyed it and found that the final 10 minutes is where the story really beings. Looking forward to the next episode.

I agree! It was an excellent start introducing the characters and then bring them all together at the end. It was as dark as expected but i think its going to get much darker! Also, a lot less city based stuff than i first thought. Can’t wait for episode two! I think Rachel McAdams is going to absolutly kill it!! (In a good way)
