The fifth season of TRUE DETECTIVE must be moving on as well as can be expected. It has got to be difficult to generate a screenplay in the right vein for this property. We are not talking about a dime-a-dozen crime plot but something our title characters, whoever they may be, must struggle with mentally & emotionally before it is solved. But at least, we have a location already picked for the next one.
HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film Francesca Orsi let it be known at the THE WHITE LOTUS premiere event just where the next season is set –
“It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay. Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
The Issa she refers to, of course, is Issa Lopez, the writer/showrunner since Season Four. For those who don’t know, the location is a great place to set up a twisted messed-up crime scene. Jamaica Bay is an estuary on the southern portion of the western tip of Long Island NY, The estuary is partially man-made and partially natural. It could be a great place for mischievous behavior, for a hidden cache or missing body but, still keeping in the show’s wheelhouse, a representation of NYC’s underbelly.
The new locale Lopez is utilizing sort of makes sense, if you look at the arc of the series in total. Season 1 was rural Louisiana; Season 2 was an inner-city California locale; Season 3 was rural Arkansas and Season 4 took us more rural still to Ennis, Alaska. So Season 5 was due to swing back to a more urban setting we feel. Orsi went on to say,
“I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa; she’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.”
The production will get underway sometime in 2025 for a debut in 2027.
