Update: Brad Pitt Takes on Second Season of  TRUE DETECTIVE?

We know, we know, we can go round and round on this topic, but go ahead and admit it, that this is fun! The rumor below has been out there for a while, but we can one-up it one better now. Here it is –

Brad Pitt is this close to signing on for Season Two of TRUE DETECTIVE and supposedly it is only a matter of scheduling it around his existing projects.  We discovered this news via The Daily Star, a UK website, which, for some reason has awesome intelligence over here to pick up on this news before anyone in the U. S. does.TrueDetective_logo

Now make no mistake that Brad Pitt has been close to HBO as of late promoting HBO Films: THE NORMAL HEART for which he is titled an executive producer. There is ample opportunity for him to talk to the bigwigs there. And it is a fact that he has a movie career, but IMDb lists two 2014 productions already in post-production (Fury and Voyage of Time) so his schedule shouldn’t be too hectic the rest of this year, right? Who am I kidding; there is no certainty of what else might be on his plate.

Now let’s raise the question of who to pair with Mr. Pitt if he is onboard. Another A-list actor, male or female, may not be that easy to get, unless they’d do it just to act with Brad. He isn’t that good an actor is he?  But catch this, the U.K. site goes on to suggest that Brad Pitt may not even need a partner and could very well tackle the case on his own.

What? That thought, of theirs not ours, seems to suggest that not enough of the scripts are even written because if Nic Pizzolatto started writing a two-person detective team for his case would he scrap a character and dialogue and start rewriting it to accommodate Pitt flying solo on this one? I don’t think so.

In the end we do not have any firm commitments. Not from HBO, which has not officially announced a sophomore season or from Brad Pitt. Maybe, he is interested hinging on his schedule or maybe, this is still pure rumor fooling us until we are shocked by who will be the next TRUE DETECTIVE(s).

From March 17, 2014

The rumor mill is always a strong force in the entertainment business churning out ‘what if’ and ‘did you hear” all day long. Since TRUE DETECTIVE proved a success for HBO the rumor process now begins on what is in store for the inevitable second season. And the name Brad Pitt People_BradPitthas been buzzed about.

The British newspaper The Telegraph has stated that  –

Brad Pitt Pitt’s name has “come up many times” with the show’s producers, and his involvement will hinge on what his other commitments are. Pitt has developed “tight relations with HBO.”

Well, I don’t know about that, but he is a producer for the upcoming HBO Films: THE NORMAL HEART so if he was walking around the halls of HBO he might have had conversations about how cool it would be to be a true detective on the series. His name, however, is the first name I’ve heard as a possibility. The strength of the show is clearly the carefully crafted characters and Mr. Pitt just might be in the mood to try such a character of substance as well drawn as Rust Cohle.

The only other whispering of casting I heard was that one or both of the leads could be female. Though an official declaration that there is even a Season Two has not come forth there is the safe bet that Nic Pizzolatto is moving very carefully towards the likelihood. Also to consider is the director(s) for an upcoming season as Cary Joji Fukunaga is not on board to direct. Let the rumors begin!

Vincent D’Onofrio. He is an awesome actor. So easily adapts to any character. Totally believable, especially as a detective. Pair him with Brad or Morgan or anybody really.

D’Onofrio!!! YES. With someone younger obviously, but definitely D’Onofrio. He is GREAT, and this show is practically made to showcase his talents.

Fuck it, bring back Mills “Ahh, whats in the box” and Morgan Freeman, and reprise their roles… that would be sick.. Freeman hangs it up, but decides to come back and help Pitt with something connecting with the 7.

I Like the thought of Brad Pitt being in this Show! I actually said that to one of my friends during the first season! I would also like to see Johnny Depp as a True Detective along with Jeffrey Wright (Board Walk Empire)! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!
I would love to see a female detective paired up with Pitt tho. Maybe someone like Jennifer Anistin!…LOL…Just Kidding!!! But seriously I would like to see him paired with Elizabeth Moss(Mad Men) or someone like Cate Blanchett! DOPE!

What female Actress do you guys think would be a good match with Brad Pitt?

I think Tom Sizemore or Vincent D’Onofrio would be good choices also!! Brad Pitt is a great choice though! I also read that series 2 might incorporate Route 66 into the new story. They mentioned So. California and the High an low Desert areas of Route 66! Very cool local for the Occult and spooky aspects of the True Detective series!

I think that a lot of the actors/actresses named here in this thread are all very talented. It would be fantastic to see two of them paired up for the second season. It has to be one heck of a pressure cooker situation for Nick Pizzolato, because he was so successful with the first season. I hope the second season is just as gripping.

I wanna see veteran actors like Tom Hanks and Samuel L Jackson in the next season.

If female, then Gillian Anderson and Rebecca Hall.

…and Sodebergh has already worked with Benicio Del Toro on “Traffic” so it would be a reunion of sorts!

Or why not Forrest Whittaker and Chiwetel Ejiofor! Whittaker was tremendous on “The a Shield” and Ejiofor is good in pretty much everything!

As for female leads…Gillian Anderson and Ellen Page (watch her in “Hard Candy” and you’ll know what I mean” are so far the only two I can think up…

Hell why not David Morrissey… He is the Governor no more on “The Walking Dead”. Can you imagine him paired up with Benedict Cumberbatch???!!!!!

I meant he retained the literary rights to Hart and Cohle…damn auto-correct. As for Mirelle Enos you can forget it. I loved her in the amazing show “The Killing” and she is a great actress, but she has a lot of projects on her plate including the production and filming of the last six episode season of “The Killing” for Netflix. Brad Pitt is also extremely busy so I doubt he’ll be available.

Personally, I’d love to see Benicio Del Toro paired up with Oscar Isaac. After all Del Toro also got an Oscar playing a cop in “Traffic”. As for a director why not get Steven Sodebergh. He has already worked with HBO and directed “Behind The Candelabra” and while in self-imposed retirement he might be coaxed to come back and direct on a show like this, if the story was good and with the understanding that he only has to commit to one 8 episode season. That’d be doable!

I feel that I am and sound like a broken record…Harrelson and McConaughey are not being replaced and neither is Cari Joji Fukanaga. They were only meant to be on the show for one season and no more. The show changes cast, director, location , settings and story with each season. That is the way it was announced by HBO and Pizzolatto. Pizzolatto said that he retained the literary eighths to the characters of Rust and Cohle and might write some novels in the future with them…

Here is an excerpt from Pizzolatto’s interview with “Entertainment Weekly and his thoughts about Season 2:

“What’s the update on season two?

I am still fleshing it out. The basic idea: Hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. I was well on my way in the writing but there’s been a lot noise and work around the end of the first season that got in the way.

Is it true that you’ve retained the literary rights to Cohle and Hart?

I do. So maybe you will see Cohle and Hart novels down the road after Hollywood kicks me out. Always a possibility.”

Thanks for the input, but we here at HBOWatch a full aware tht the show is an anthology. People are just in denial that these two characters are not moving forward because they loved them so.

They always react that way when they don’t see a storyline going the way they want it to go. It happened witht the deaths of Tony Soprano, Jimmy Darmody and Ned Stark. It is just pure denial.

Yet we can be excited for what direction TRUE DETECTIVE will go in next and wait with great anticipation. Remember though, we cannot rush quality; we must show patience.

Replacing Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson is a HUGE mistake…The character Chole makes this show and no one can play him like Maytthew. Without the same characters / detectives from the first season …..the show will not be as good and I personally will no longer watch it. Iam extremely disappointed in the writers/producers or whoever made the decision to change the characters and actors.

it was explained before first season already

This isn’t new information, it was well documented before the premiere even aired that this is an anthology series.

And no, “Chole” doesn’t make the show. He was an extremely well-written character and fascinating to watch, but too much of him would spoil the attraction of his character. There are plenty of other factors at work in the show other than Matthew McConaughey.

I would suggest giving the second season a chance, but you seem to have your mind made up already.

Chole did too make the show “the best i have ever seen”! It will not be nearly as good and i wont be watching each episode three to four times like i did with the first season. Couldve been epic!

Crystal Clark-Bennett March 18, 2014 - 7:58 am

Chole isn’t being replaced. That character was only meant for one season to begin with. The next season will have new characters and a new cast just like American Horror Story did. They’ve said all along that this was an anthology. Henceforth the beginning and end of the first season; that chapter has been closed.

As much as I doubt it will happen, Pitt seems like a very fitting choice given the Se7en-esque vibes a lot of us got from the first season. Although, I would like to see at least one strong female lead in the second season, as Pizzolatto has hinted at.

Brad Pitt and Mireille Enos would be so great together for TD. Sure, they were in World War Z together, but Enos’ role in TD would/should be much different from the role she had in WWZ.

This is so obviously perfect I can’t stand it.
Brad Pitt is the example you would give when you’d say “True Detective needs star power again next season”.

I say pull the trigger, Brad! Get him a female co-star as well. Need a badass women detective next season.

Except Brad Pitt should be the older/wiser detective, and pair him with someone younger.

If you are going to do a show based in twisted sub plots and even attempt to beat last season, why wouldn’t you pair Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt? Ive never met anyone who has not seen and admired Se7en. Topping that however, would be the problem.
