True Blood’s Tangled Web of Relationships, and How to Keep Them All Straight (or Not-So-Straight)

If you’re anything like me, the True Blood season 6 trailers are just making you itch for more. It’s been a long hiatus between seasons, and us Truebies crave new episodes like a vampire craves some good ol’ bottled O-Neg. The wait is almost over, but before we start a new season of blood, sex, and intrigue it helps to look back on all the important things that have happened between our favorite characters.

I’m talking, of course, of relationships. Half the fun of True Blood is watching these relationships unfold–and sometimes get destroyed. There’s no “will they, won’t they” on this show, just “have and haven’t screwed…yet.”

Let’s start off with the lovely Sookie, shall we?

Sookie and Bill.

Love at first bite.

Since way back in season 1, these two have been the mascots for the show. Sookie and Bill have been through it all–from marriage proposals, to murdering for each other, to Bill almost killing her in the back of a van. Not exactly the normal ups-and-downs of a relationship…but then again, nothing is normal on this show.

They’ve definitely evolved from the sweeping romance of the earlier seasons, and they’ve gone down some dark roads in the process. While I’ve always had a soft spot for Bill’s unwavering love for Sookie, I thought she was justified in rejecting him. Vampires have made Sookie’s life a living hell, not to mention the fact that Bill only got to know her in the first place at the behest of the Queen. Fairy blood is a hot commodity, but that doesn’t excuse his betrayal.

In the recent seasons, Sookie and Bill have more or less repaired their friendship–though her canoodling with other vamps can’t make it easy. It was heartwarming to see Sookie insist at the end of last season that there was still some good in Bill (though we have yet to see if that’s actually the case after his incredibly creepy rebirth as Lilith).

Sookie and Eric

To me, this relationship is endlessly entertaining to watch, partly due to the sizzling chemistry between Anna Paquin and Alexander Skarsgard. We all know Eric is a manipulative bastard who can’t be trusted, but that doesn’t stop Sookie from going toe-to-toe with the vampire Sheriff. After Sookie drank his blood, the two of them have had some bonding, some fantasies about each other, and a lot of eyesex.

A LOT of eyesex.

That didn’t turn into actual-sex until Eric lost his memories at the hands of a witch, turning him into a softer, more gentle Eric. It was this Eric that Sookie fell for while he was under her care, and while it was sweet, part of me missed the power-hungry viking-vamp I had come to know and love. Their romance ended when Eric regained knowledge of who he really is, though the chemistry is still there between them. I’m holding out hope that it gets rekindled, without the amnesia this time.

Sookie and Alcide

Sookie’s a smart girl, but when she swore off vamps, you’d think she would have gone the whole nine yards and not dated any supernatural creatures at all. But then we’d have no show. Her relationship with werewolf Alcide was simply a friendship with some cute flirting for a long time. After all, his ex was nuts, and Sookie had enough crazy in her life. Alcide is a refreshing change of pace from the two vamps–not just by being a wolf, but being an Average Joe who works hard and loves fiercely. His protectiveness towards Sookie is one of my favorite things, and he’s always reliable when she’s in trouble (which is often).

She must be standing on a step here.

Their friendship turned into something more when Sookie was drowning her worries in booze, and the two of them flirted and made out for a while. Sookie even went so far as to accuse him of being in love with her. The fling was rudely interrupted by the appearance of both of Sookie’s former suitors…and her alcohol-induced nausea.

If we covered every relationship on the show, we’d be here all night (and I have reruns to watch). So let’s continue with a few interesting off-shoots of these three main pairings.

Eric and Pam, Pam and Tara

I was pretty surprised when it was revealed that Eric and his progeny once had a sexual relationship, maybe because we had only seen Pam with ladies until then. The banter between these two has always been top-notch and hilarious, but I admit that I got pretty emotional when he declared that he would no longer be her master. And I’m not saying it’s some kind of requirement to hook up with the vamp that made you (don’t tell me that Eric and Godric didn’t happen), but after making Tara her own baby-vamp, Pam moved on pretty quickly. The girls were surprisingly cute together, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that relationship works out.

Completely normal sibling behavior.

 Eric and Nora

Yes, Eric gets the most action on the show–this time with his “sister.” Both vampires were made by Godric, and the bond between them is highly sexual. Their political and religious views could not be further apart, but that didn’t stop Eric from saving her from the Sanguinista bunker last season. Together, they’re a pretty unstoppable force, especially now with the Authority out of the way.

Alcide and Rikki

Alicide got mighty friendly with his sparring partner and fellow werewolf, Rikki. But with Alcide as the new packmaster, this relationship seems doomed to be filled with drama. Which is just how I like it.

Sam and Luna

This is one of my favorite relationships to watch unfold–if you forget about the creeptastic incident with Sam’s brother shifting into Sam to have sex with Luna. Besides that, the two shifters have one of the most normal relationships on the show. They have problems every couple has, like Sam trying to bond with Luna’s young daughter. I admit, not every couple has a pack of werewolves to deal with, but for this show that’s the norm.

One of the great things about True Blood is that it constantly pushes the envelope. The use of blood-induced sex dreams makes for some hot, and sometimes awkward, moments. Basically, if you thought you’d never see it happen, think again.

What is even going on here?

 Sam and Bill

I distinctly remember this being one of the most awkward scenes of television that I had ever witnessed in my mother’s presence. It wasn’t made clear that this was actually a dream until after the guys stripped down and Bill invited Sam into the shower. The healing powers of vampire blood come with a price–and that price is inconvenient boners.

Sookie, Eric, and Bill

The threesome we all wish would happen actually did happen. In Sookie’s head, at least. This time it was obvious that Sookie was dreaming, but that didn’t stop the scene from being both hot and hilarious. Something about Sookie’s housewife dress just killed me, I can’t watch this scene without bursting into giggles. I think we all can agree that Anna Paquin has the best job in the world.

An actual scene from the show.

I’m sure there will be more one-night-stands, romantic gestures, and wet dreams in the coming season of True Blood. All I can really say is: can I get some of that vampire blood?

Love this!! Great stuff!
While this chronicles all the major players we have come to know and love, where is Lala? What about sweet Arlene and Terry? Jason and….everyone. Haha! So many other couplings to keep our eyes out for.
Great article!

This show has gotten so crazy I don’t feel I can predict who’s gonna hookup with whom. I wanted the E&S hookup in S4 but I think the writers missed the mark. Maybe having no expectations is the best way to enjoy the show going into S6

I still after watching all seasons over again find Sookie and Eric the hottest couple in the show and the most popular ,But all these other relationships just make this show what it is. Pure sexy!

If we ever get Quinn on the show I’m going to make the highest-pitched fangirl scream known to man. You’ve all been warned.
