Another project we have been tracking makes it onto HBO; this one from the creators of BIG LOVE. Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer are returning to the channel with the U. S. version of GETTING ON. It derives from the BBC comedy that has appeared for three seasons. Pictured at right are the original’s creators/leads Joanne Scanlan, Vicki Pepperdine and Jo Brand who will serve as executive producers for HBO’s version as well.

Here is a bit of a description pulled from our previous GETTING ON post and the link for the entire piece:

[box]The comedy takes place in a women’s geriatric extended care wing of a somewhat rundown hospital and follows a few nurses, some anxious doctors and hospital administrators as they deal with the harsh realities of caring for the elderly in an overwhelmed healthcare system. Of course, head writers Olson & Scheffer will tweak the show for an American audience.[/box]

Of course, Olson & Scheffer will tweak the show for an American audience. It has received a six-episode order and stars Laurie Metcalf (of  Roseanne fame), Niecy Nash (of Reno:911) and Alex Borstein (the voice of Family Guy’s Lois Griffin).GettingOn_actresses-300x124

This dark comedy is just one of a number of comedy series HBO is preparing to air.  FAMILY TREE premieres in May and there are four other comedies in various stages of development that come to mind. It looks like scripted comedy will be quite healthy on the network in the future. As soon as HBOWatch has any production stills, premiere dates or other news about GETTING ON we will get it posted.

I purposely left out any details or episode plots for the BBC version in this post. One, is to have fuel for future posts as this show develops for HBO and secondly, it is too soon to say how the U. S. version will differ from the U. K. show.

Watch the original BBC series. It’s nothing like nurse Jackie.

I have not seen the BBC series. It does sound less dramatic than nurse Jackie. But I have read about the character Dr. Pippa Moore and her description sounds a lot like Jackie. A lady who is uptight and selfish. Pipa likes one of the guys that she works with while Nurse Jackie dates one of the guys she works with.
