This Just In About… GAME OF THRONES Apology

It seems show creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss want to issue an official apology to GAME OF THRONES fans everywhere. Theymedium have received some flak for a prop used on set and have been called out on it. Depicted in a scene are the ravages of war including decapitated heads on pikes. One such prop head appears to be a likeness of George W. Bush sporting long hair. When the likeness was discovered the word, of course, travelled fast.

The pay channel and the production team felt it necessary to issue the following apologies:

HBO: We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste. We made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this inadvertent careless mistake. We are sorry this happened and will have it removed from any future DVD production

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss: We use a lot of prosthetic body parts on the show: heads, arms, etc. We can’t afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk. After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush.

In the DVD commentary, we mentioned this, though we should not have. We meant no disrespect to the former President and apologize if anything we said or did suggested otherwise.

HBOWatch knows that avid fans do not need another excuse to watch the show but, here you go. Let’s see how long it takes for someone to comment here on exactly which scene the offending prop is located.

UPDATE: The scene in question, which took place during the Season One Finale, as been drawing a lot of fire from critics this week. Since the writing of this article, Deadline.com is reporting that HBO has taken furthur actions in response to this controversy.

From Deadline.com:

“[Episode 10] has been pulled from all digital platforms, including HBO Go and iTunes. Additionally, shipments of the DVD box set featuring the show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ commentary that drew attention to the use of the head as a prop, have been halted as HBO continues to mitigate the damage from the controversy.”

The article also includes a new, stronger statement from HBO:

“We made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this careless mistake. We condemn it in the strongest possible terms and have halted all future shipments of the DVDs, removed it from our digital platforms and will edit the scene for all future airings on any distribution domestic or international.”

There is no mention as to how long the episode will taken down for, or when DVD shipments are expected to resume. However, it’s clear that HBO plans to cut the scene for any future releases. While it’s nice that the network is taking such a great interest in public relations, the move can end up having an big effect on new viewers. Consider those who look to OnDemand or HBOGo to catch up on the series. They will have a hard time piecing together certain events with the season one finale missing. Hopefully, HBO can solve this problem and make the episode available again ASAP.

I laughed when I first read this. The mood among most Game Of Thrones fans seems to be humorous. No-one’s taking the matter particularly and judging from the comments from Benoff and Weiss above, it doesn’t seem to have been done deliberately.

Although even if it was, it would be the best Easter Egg in a TV series ever!
