“Just heard someone say that anyone who moves to Thailand is either looking for something or hiding from something?”
This aptly named episode brings us well into the evening as guests continue their luxurious stay at the White Lotus. While politics might have made the end of the night awkward for the trio of ladies, it’s Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) who wakes up itching for something. Hubby hasn’t texted or called back, and she’s on a mission to prove they are all still hot, young…ish ladies. Valentin (Arnas Fedaravicius) suggests another beach, but when Jaclyn sees the older crowd, she’s personally insulted. Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Laurie (Carrie Coon) don’t seem to mind as much. But this is not what Jaclyn meant by a hip, hopping spot. After they return to the hotel, they steal Valentin and make their way to the streets. He calls two friends for back-up because these ladies need a good time. Though perhaps fewer water guns. The ladies don’t enjoy the festival shenanigans, but y’all made yourselves targets by not playing along. Of course, these kids are gonna come after you. Instead of playing and having fun, you’re yelling at them. Good luck finding a back exit of that store to sneak out of.
Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) talks to her son Zion (Nicholas Duvernay), who will be there soon. What an amazing work vacation to get to take on her end, but to get to see her son and celebrate finishing finals together? What an amazing opportunity! When she’s not thinking of his imminent arrival, she’s distracted by her interaction with Gary…Greg (Jon Gries). She just knows she knows him. That horrible itch in your brain that you just cannot shake. Eventually, she used her downtime to go internet spelunking, thus confirming everything she suspected. Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) is indeed dead, and her husband is MIA. The awkward eye contact as Belinda walked through the lobby was so brilliantly well done. Something I can always give Mike White credit for, besides character creation and script writing, is that he knows how to nail the cinematography of an awkward moment. Speaking of…
“You’re just as judgmental as I am, if not more so, darling.”
The Ratliff family, who had happily divested themselves of their electronics last episode, is having some ups and downs. Dad (Jason Isaacs) followed mom’s (Parker Posey) medical advice a little too hard. He’s a little dazed, even accidentally flashing the family. Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) has gotten the family invited on a boat trip with Greg and Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon). But he keeps bullying both his siblings, Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola). He tells Lochy that he needs to be a man and get swole and not be like that “sourpuss sadsack shithead” also known as his sister. Speaking that way about your siblings is one thing, but that whole swastika comment is another. I don’t know, guys. I think I just need him to die. I haven’t hated an HBO character this much since Ramsay Snow. But Piper had been banking on Lochy being at dinner for support when she dropped the bomb for the parents: that she’s moving here to go to meditation school or whatever after she graduates. Oof, they’re not going to take that well, and sadly, since Lochy and Saxon need to go party with some lovely ladies because of a celestial thing, she’s on her own. The boat ride was manageable for Mom until she found her pills mysteriously missing. Oh, daddio, when will you come clean? His conversation with Greg was perfect. Two liars lying to each other. But dad’s feeling the pressure and needs to check his phone. Buzz, buzz, buzz. Someone is talking, and someone isn’t, and I know how the criminal justice system works. You’re fucked, daddio.
“If I need any help hiding money from the government or my ex-wives, I’ll let you know.”
Rick (Walton Goggins) and Chelsea (Aimee Lee Wood) also get invited on the boat. Chelsea is trying to push for Rick to have another session with Amrita (Shalini Peiris) but he resists. And it’s a shame because Amrita has really connected with him and is trying to help him release himself from his pain. And on Chelsea’s end, she doesn’t even fully understand because he won’t let her in. Finally, they have a chat and he explains why he needs to go to Bangkok and confront the hotel owner. Whether it’s true or not, he’s lived his whole life without his father and the belief that this man killed him. For her, she has a bad feeling but she also doesn’t want him to have to deal with it alone. She wants to go with him and hopefully keep him from doing something stupid. His interaction with the other older men on the boat was absolutely gut-busting. I appreciate the writing on this show so much. In the end, Chelsea returns to the boat for the full moon festivities and we see Rick at the airport preparing for his flight. I truly hope her Final Destination comment is just that – a comment. And not a foreshadowing of what’s to come for either of them… If Chelsea dies, we revolt.
“You can let go of your story.”
But we can’t forget Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong) and Mook (Lalisa Manobal). She is dancing in the festivities that night but comes to check on him before her shift. How was the meeting? Did he get promoted? The meeting was fine, but there wasn’t a promotion on the table. It was a gun. A big step for a security guard to take in their job. Working security is one thing. Working armed security is a whole other ball game. Leave the gun, take the cannoli. And sadly, Gaitok’s head isn’t on the ball but on the beautiful lady standing before him. Uh-oh, Gaitok, now your gun is missing…
We round out the episode with a bevy of beautiful ladies heading out to party with the two Ratliff boys. Piper Ratliff flies solo in having to drop a big bomb on her parents, who are both pharma high. Greg is seen at home researching Belinda, and we can feel the tension. Rick is in a place of transition at the airport, wondering what his next step is. Could it be his downfall or his release? Either way, this season is ramping up, and I am obsessed. Three episodes left, and it feels like almost anything is possible.
