THE NEVERS is almost upon us and we are a little bit excited that the series will be in front of our eyes coming in April 2021. An exact debut date has not been locked down right now but the recently dropped teaser gives us enough to ponder until then. But first, the details:

HBO’s new drama series THE NEVERS will debut this April with six-episodes on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people – mostly women – who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities – some charming, some very disturbing. Among TheNevers.Pic1_them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly of Outlander), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly of Death and Nightingales), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whose history as we know it has no place.

The ensemble cast also includes Olivia Williams (Miss Austen Regrets), James Norton (Grantchester), Tom Riley (Dark Heart), Rochelle Neil (Death in Paradise), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Amy Manson (Torchwood), Pip Torrens (The Crown),  Zackary Momoh (Seven Seconds), Elizabeth Berrington (Sanditon), Nick Frost ((Fighting With My Family), Ben Chaplin(The Children Act) and Denis O’Hare (This Is Us and TRUE BLOOD). THE NEVERS is created and executive produced by Joss Whedon; executive produced by Bernadette Caulfield, Ilene S. Landress, Doug Petrie, Jane Espenson and Philippa Goslett.

TheNevers.Pic2_-300x249Note that last name above. Philippa Goslett is the new showrunner after Joss Whedon bowed out. The British filmmaker behind features Mary Magdalene and How To Talk To Girls At Parties had picked up the mantle late last year. The six episodes HBO will debut in the spring were filmed before Whedon’s departure. The remainder of the first season, under Goslett, will follow at a later time; those episodes, delayed because of COVID-19, are in preproduction.

The Victorian-set show then, gives us individuals, mostly women evidently, who have special gifts making them mutated from the mortal norms. The Internet has already branded them “Victorian X-Men.” Some will no doubt try to hide their abilities while others will use them for good and others for evil and all of society will be up in arms fearing them, shunning them, or studying and exploiting them. As we will see in the teaser however, these Touched can hold their own pretty well. It sounds like the making of something seen before, from the MCU for example, but never with the Whedon touch to it. Hopefully, Goslett can continue on strongly with it. Get ready for THE NEVERS this April.

The April release date and “they’re coming” tagline makes me think this is another bid at “the next Game of Thrones.” It looks promising!

I think those people who have taken the ‘sheltering in place’ practice quite seriously have been voraciously gobbling up content and are eagerly awaiting something exciting and new, thus giving THE NEVERS a good chance to shine.
