Back in 2021, we dropped information that THE IDOL was a series going forward. Words surrounding its description were ‘unique’ and ‘subversive’ and upon viewing the teaser that has been generated we can now add ‘sleazy’, ‘twisted’, ‘fucked up’ and ‘nasty’ to that list. Hey, it is HBO after all, and it can get away with it.

But, of course, don’t just take my word for it (though you should), take in the Teaser and see for yourselves. “5, 6, 7, 8…”

Now is that a tease or what? As is stated, Sam Levinson & The Weeknd are behind the gig and you can see & hear their influences in there. Levinson gives us EUPHORIA, of course. THE IDOL gives us the same sex, drugs & gritty agita that EUPHORIA does, and this looks like that but perhaps kicked up a notch, if possible. Perhaps that is because of The Weeknd’s (Abel Tesfaye) input. He, no doubt, has the soundtrack well in hand, with his driving style of music which ramps up the erotic vibe. Looks like it could be rather intense and sweaty. Hell, add those two descriptive words to the list we’ve got going too.

TheIdol-DeppThe plot description given talks of a modern-day cult leader and his convoluted relationship with a hot pop star. Though in the previous post I wasn’t sure who played who, it is clear now that Tesfaye is the charismatic cult leader and Lilly-Rose Depp is our pop star. The relationship is definitely a sexual one. Who am I kidding, this is HBO so it is a real carnal one let’s say? So, it is a messy, tangled relationship, but I’m kind of curious about just what sort of cult is his character behind. Is he just grooming Depp’s character to be a key disciple or is this attraction solely drug-enhanced or is there a genuine affection brewing here? And, to what end?

Ah, the true intent of a Teaser coming forth. It sets the mind to wonder about the series ahead. Ha! Or is the fourth wall broken and The Weeknd’s character is getting to us as well? Stew on that for a while.

No premiere date is set yet, but we will keep you posted. Get ready for “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”
