We were all hoping we wouldn’t see the last of Jesse Armstrong at HBO. His SUCCESSION rocked it out of the park for four seasons, but there was no indication of what was forthcoming. HBO needs him in their stable, as it were. Finally we get word that the next project is not a series, but an HBO Films presentation and that’s okay too. A group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis. Here are the details tht we know so far.
HBO will debut an original film written, directed, and executive produced by seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated Jesse Armstrong this spring. He will be joined by his partner at SUCCESSION, Frank Rich. Production on the film begins this month in Park City, Utah and will be Armstrong’s feature directorial debut.
The work is yet to be titled but focuses on a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international financial crisis. It is not a historical piece, but a fictional rendering of what such a crisis would entail. It is as if say, Musk, Bezos, Zukerberg, Buffett, Gates, etc. became a think tank to solve the issue. It could prove quite interesting and quite topical.
The cast involved includes Oscar and eleven-time Emmy-nominee Steve Carell as Randall, Jason Schwartzman (HBO’s BORED TO DEATH) as Hugo Van Yalk, Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night) as Venis and Ramy Youssef (HBO’s “MORE FEELINGS”) as Jeff.
Armstrong stated, “I’m intrigued to discover whether being around so many brilliant actors and directors on ‘Succession’ has in any way rubbed off on me. Let’s hope so. I’m grateful to Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi and the whole HBO team for backing this film so wholeheartedly and helping me pull together a dream team of cast and crew.”
