The producer/director Steven Soderbergh, who has given HBO the documentary CITIZENFOUR, HBO Films: BEHIND THE CANDELABRA, Cinemax’s THE KNICK, Sharon Stone’s MOSAIC and the almost forgotten K STREET from 2003, has locked in a new development deal with the network.
Last month Soderbergh signed a three-year development deal with WarnerMedia to create content for both HBO and for HBO Max and has, in fact, set a project in motion for the latter service with Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen and Diane Weist in front of the camera. That project is a feature film entitled LET THEM ALL TALK. That film will launch on HBO Max in 2020. There have been no details on a specific project for HBO as of yet.
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max stated, “Steven is a groundbreaking filmmaker who not only tells unique, irresistible stories, but is also a master of so many genres, In many ways, he is the anti-algorithm constantly surprising, never predictable and his career is living proof that one gifted filmmaker can impact our culture again and again. I can’t wait for the projects that we’re working on together to premiere on HBO Max.” Casey Bloys, President of HBO Programming, weighed in with – “From Behind the Candelabra, to The Knick and Mosaic, we know first-hand that Steven Soderbergh’s creative genius knows no bounds. An indefatigable innovator, we couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with Steven and provide a home for his future projects.”
Now the problem arises of which projects go to HBO and which to HBO Max? Will we perhaps see another limited series from him on HBO? Time will tell but we are glad he is back in the stable, as it were, and look forward to what he creates. What is your favorite Soderberg work? Is it THE KNICK or Red Oaks, Traffic or even way back to sex, lies, and videotape?
